IPL absence fueling India-England animosity? Gavaskar decodes Crawley-Gill on-field spat

The high-voltage drama that followed between England opener Zak Crawley and Indian players during the last five minutes of Day 3 of the third Anderson-Tendulkar Test at Lord's on Saturday is grabbing a lot of eyeballs, with reactions coming in from different parts of the world. Batting great Sunil Gavaskar opened up the whole saga, suggesting that the absence of key England players from the Indian Premier League (IPL) might have contributed to the growing animosity between the two sides. 'There is a reason why this happened. That's because not a lot of England players are competing in the IPL,' said Gavaskar on air. 'That's my thinking. From this England team, Joe Root did not play, Ben Stokes did not play. Most of these English players don't play in the Indian Premier League. What has happened with other teams is that a lot of their players are in the IPL. They have mixed with the Indian players, travelled with them. They shared changing room. You see the players of other countries competing in the T20 league, and when they turn up against India in international cricket, there is no fight among the cricketers of both teams,' he added. The fiery exchange in the final over on Saturday had a lot of dramatic visuals, with India's captain Shubman Gill in the thick of it. Annoyed by Crawley's time-wasting tactics that ensured India just got in one over as opposed to two that they would have hoped, Gill ran from the slips, hurled verbals at Crawley and Ben Duckett, pointed fingers, and mock-clapped at Crawley. The England openers also stood their ground, and gave it all back. Gavaskar continued, 'On the other hand, we don't see this happening between the Indian and English players. This is what I keep saying, before the IPL, there was lot of animosity, bordering on being brutal, between some players. That intensity is still there, like Archer bowling to Yashasvi. There is lot of confrontation between India and England players because they don't play in the IPL.' Speaking on England and Crawley's motives, he said, '…England wanting to make it the last over. The Indians thought it was may bit of gamesmanship. Maybe it was,' Sunil Gavaskar said on air after Day 3 ended. Zak Crawley has the right to call a physio as pain is an individual thing. Indian batters should also follow these tactics. They don't do it,' he added.

Who is Sachin Tendulkar's favourite tennis player now after years of liking John McEnroe and Roger Federer? And which Indian player would make his Tennis XI?

It is well known that Tendulkar would wear a headband McEnroe style, and fancy himself an aggressive Speedster in cricket. But his Wimbledon favourites have changed over the years, and now it's the smiling charmer Carlos Alcaraz, aiming for his third crown playing Jannik Sinner on Sunday in the finals. 'I grew up admiring John McEnroe. I remember all my friends supported Björn Borg, but for some reason, I always backed McEnroe. I would even wear a headband like him, hoping people would call me McEnroe while I walked around with my friends,' Tendulkar recalled, speaking on JioHotstar after one more trip to SW19. In more recent years, though, his loyalty shifted to to be Roger Federer. 'I've enjoyed watching Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, all of them, but somehow, Roger takes the cake,' he would say. His contemporary favourite? 'Among the current players, Carlos Alcaraz really impresses me—his energy is infectious. I love the spring in his legs, his attitude, and the mental toughness he showed at the French Open. That never-give-up mindset is the hallmark of a true champion. Not all tennis players become champions, but the preparation and rigour they go through—I have huge respect for that,' Tendulkar told JioHotstar. Tendulkar has often been invited to the Royal Box. 'I especially love the Royal Box—the atmosphere there is unmatched. It's the best spot to sit and watch the action unfold. But beyond the matches, you meet so many people and have so many different conversations. When it comes to fashion, there are a number of fashion icons, Hollywood stars, footballers, and athletes around. It's always a treat to be here because you get introduced to so many new things in life. And for me, learning never stops—I'm still learning.' He likened Wimbledon to Lord's and spoke of why it was the Grand Slam he prized over the other three. Greatness meets greatness! 🤩 The Master Blaster, @sachin_rt, graces Wimbledon as he reflects on childhood memories, his tennis idols, and current favourites! 🎾✨#Wimbledon2025 👉 Women's Singles Finals | TODAY, 8.30 PM onwards, LIVE on Star Sports Network & JioHotstar! — Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) July 12, 2025 'It's incredible. Just like people say Lord's is the Home of Cricket, this is the Mecca of Tennis. I grew up watching Wimbledon, and right from the age of seven or eight, when I started following and understanding a little bit about tennis, it's always been Wimbledon first and then the rest of the Grand Slams. So for me, this is the ultimate. I've spoken to a number of tennis players, and they all rate this tournament right at the top,' he said. Tendulkar stressed on the importance of coordinated footwork in both sports. 'If I have to talk about similarities, the key elements are hand-eye coordination, ball sense, game awareness, and being a step ahead of the opposition. Footwork, in particular, is crucial. In cricket, especially when you're batting, coordinated footwork matters—and it's the same in tennis,' he said. Known for his aggressive running between the wickets which he took as seriously as strokeplay, Tendulkar said, 'People often think running between the wickets is just a straight sprint, but it's really about how quickly you can stop, turn, and accelerate again.' The batting legend known for running plenty of frenzied doubles. 'Tennis players similarly try to catch each other off balance or wrong-footed. It's all about swift, effortless movement across the court. That's when you're in the best position to play your shots and go on the attack. These are the elements I see in common,' he furthered the comparison. Tendulkar also revealed who he would pick as his doubles partner. 'I've played doubles with Yuvraj Singh before. We teamed up against some of our 2003 World Cup teammates, and we ended up becoming champions. So I'd settle for Yuvraj again—no question.' JioHotstar asked him to pick a Tennis XI. It has to be Roger Federer, because of his connection with cricket—his mother is South African. But beyond Roger, you've got Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, Rohan Bopanna, and Sania Mirza, who have all done exceedingly well here. Indians obviously follow cricket, and what these players have done for Indian tennis is simply remarkable. So needless to say, they would always be strong contenders.'

Star Indian player creates history, sets huge WTC record of..., his name is... New Delhi: Ravindra Jadeja once again proved his importance to Team India. In the third Test being played at Lord's, he scored a crucial half-century in pressure conditions, helping India move closer to England's first-innings score of 387 runs. Jadeja handled the innings in difficult times and got the team out with difficulty. It was his third consecutive fifty in the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy. What did Jadeja do? Jadeja rescued India in difficult conditions and kept the wicket at the other end. With both ball and bat they are making valuable contributions to the team. Even though he has not taken many wickets on foreign pitches, he is proving to be a hugely important player by saving runs in the fielding and showing consistency in the bat. How was history made? Ravindra Jadeja reached a significant milestone by completing his 15th half-century in the World Test Championship (WTC). With 134 wickets and over 2000 runs to his name, he has now become the first player in WTC history to register 15 fifties along with more than 130 wickets. This remarkable achievement highlights his exceptional all-round capabilities on the international stage. In what position is India? India started the third day at 145/3 and added over 100 runs in the first session. Pant scored 74 runs playing in an attacking style but was run out on the last ball of the session. KL Rahul scored a brilliant century, but was soon dismissed. Built a partnership with Washington Sundar? Jadeja held one end and formed important partnerships with Nitish Reddy and Washington Sundar. At the time of writing, India were only 35 runs behind England and looked in a position to take the lead. The pitch is flat, so it remains a challenging contest for both teams.
