Martin Zubimendi chooses surprise Arsenal shirt number after completing transfer
Martin Zubimendi's move to Arsenal has finally been confirmed as the Spain international signs a five-year deal with the Gunners as he departs Real Sociedad for pastures new Martin Zubimendi will wear the no.36 shirt for Arsenal after completing his move the club. The Spaniard arrives from Real Sociedad in a £55million deal and signed a five-year contract with the Gunners. The 26-year-old arrives in north London as Arsenal's second signing of the summer, following compatriot Kepa Arrizabalaga to the Emirates. And the transfer marks the club's first major move in the summer market as Mikel Arteta attempts to assemble a squad that can eventually move beyond Premier League runners-up. As a significant signing, Zubimendi likely had some freedom in establishing his new shirt number. Zubimendi bore four on the back of his shirt for Real Sociedad last term - a figure currently occupied by Arsenal defender Ben White. The midfielder's international shirt number was available, but Zubimendi opted against 18 on this occasion. That latter became available just days ago after Takehiro Tomiyasu departed the Emirates after the parties mutually agreed to end his contract prematurely. But Zubimendi's choice of 36 will see young goalkeeper Tommy Setford, 19, require a new shirt next term. Last summer's signing from Ajax made his debut in the Carabao Cup against Preston during 2024/25 and was a regular on Arsenal's bench during their Champions League campaign. It is the number Zubimendi wore when breaking through at Real Sociedad however. And the Spaniard wants to take the shirt for his debut season with the Gunners. Ismael Bennacer wore the number in 2015/16 while Emi Martinez held it for a season in 2012/13. Jonathan Djourou and Jermaine Pennant are among the first team selections to don the shirt. "Once I made the decision to leave, I set my sights on Arsenal because I think their style of play is a good fit for me," said Zubimendi upon his arrival at Arsenal. "It's a young, highly motivated and ambitious team. They have shown their potential recently, and I believe the best is yet to come. As soon as you set foot here, you realise how big this club and this team are. Andrea [Berta] and Mikel [Arteta] took excellent care of me, leaving me with no doubts whatsoever. "This is a huge moment in my career. It's the move I was looking for; one I wanted to make. Of course, it's a big change, but I'm ready to get started.'

WIMBLEDON is heading towards the business end at the All England Club - and two Brits will be looking to book their spots in the quarter-finals TODAY. Sonay Kartal kicks off the action on Centre Court as the British superstar faces Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the last-16. In the men's, Cameron Norrie takes on Nicolas Jarry for a spot in the quarter-finals. Reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz wraps up action on Centre Court as he takes on Andrey Rublev. Taylor Fritz secured his spot in the quarter-finals after Jordan Thompson retired due to a leg injury. WIMBLEDON 2025 FREE BETS AND SIGN UP OFFERS Follow our live blog below... 19 minutes ago By Martin Lipton Kartal* 3-2 Pavlyuchenkova Kartal has 15,000 fans in her corner, and they whoop with delight as she races to the net to flick one onto the baseline and get to 0-30. A Pavlyuchenkova error gives the Brit two break points and she only needs one of them, as the Russian's cross court forehand drifts wide. What a turnaround. Game on! 22 minutes ago By Martin Lipton Kartal 2-2 Pavlyuchenkova* No signs that the strapping is anything more than precautionary now as Kartal levels. It's already a battle for dominance with both players wanting to take the initiative. But Kartal is backing herself from a defensive position as well, unleashing a terrific forehand pass before the Russian is wide on game point. 24 minutes ago By Joshua Jones Thompson retires Oh, this is very sad to see. The damage done to his leg is too painful for him to continue. He walks to the net after giving it a go for three points to call it a day. Sad scenes - but Fritz will be relieved. He is through after 41 minutes. 26 minutes ago By Martin Lipton Kartal* 1-2 Pavlyuchenkova That's more like it and an instant break back as Kartal gets on the front foot for the first time. Pavlyuchenkova's serve are all returned with interest to bring three break points as Kartal finds her depth and a weak drop shot attempt from the 34-year-old Russian barely reaches the net. Roars of the crowd tell their own story 29 minutes ago By Martin Lipton Kartal 0-2 Pavlyuchenkova* Not the start Kartal was looking for as the power of the Russian breaks through alongside the first rays of sunshine through the roof. Pavlyuchenkova has weight of shot on both wings and she is already forcing the Brit back. Kartal saves the first beak point and looks to have escaped the second with a lob but an overhead backhand voley drops beyond the home player and lands inside the lines 30 minutes ago By Joshua Jones Brighter... but still raining The huge roars of thunder seem to have stopped. And it is definitely a lot brighter than it was ten minutes ago. However, it is still raining. Hmmm. Currently no play on the outside courts before 2.15pm, which feels somewhat... ambitious. 32 minutes ago By Joshua Jones Fritz* 6-1 3-0 Thompson Thompson heading off court for a medical time-out. Fritz takes his seat as he waits. 33 minutes ago By Joshua Jones Fritz* 6-1 3-0 Thompson Uh oh, this is bad news for Jordan Thompson. He has called the trainer to the court at the change of ends down 3-0. The Aussie has heavy strapping on his thighs and is removing that tape as he gets the pushed and prodded around by the doc. Will keep an eye on this. 34 minutes ago By Joshua Jones Fritz* 6-1 3-0 Thompson Fritz Blitz alert. The No5 seed is racing through on No1 - and making the most of the roof. He raced through the first set 6-1 in just 21 minutes and already has the double break in the second. 36 minutes ago By Martin Lipton Kartal* 0-0 Pavlyuchenkova Ripple of applause as the Russian easily holds to love with Kartal getting a solitary shot in play. Long way to go, mind. 39 minutes ago By Martin Lipton Kartal* 0-1 Pavlyuchenkova So here we go. The roof is closed for the first time in daylight this Championships and you winder if it might get a bit too much for Sonay Kartal on her Centre Court debut. Thunder and lightning above. And a tense atmosphere inside. While there was a single ranking place between the pair before the tournament, Pavlyuchenkova first played at Wimbledon in 2007 - when Kartal was in primary school. Kartal came out to a big ovation as the rain poured down outside. But she has heavy strapping around her right knee. Could that be a factor. 40 minutes ago By Etienne Fermie Sonay Kartal knee update Eagle-eyed fans among you may have noticed the heavy strapping around Sonay Kartal's knee. Following her doubles match alongside Jodie Burrage yesterday, Kartal said: "(The tape) is just precaution. I am testing it out in the match today to see whether or not I like it. "I'm all good. It took a lot for me to come out of doubles retirement."
