Brandy and Monica reveal who inspired their hit song The Boy Is Mine
Brandy and Monica revealed the inspiration behind their hit duet, The Boy Is Mine, 25 years after releasing the song.
The pair reflected on their collaborative track, which won a Grammy following its release nearly three decades ago, after announcing their upcoming, co-headlining tour of the same name.
While making a joint appearance on Wednesday's episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the duo discussed the making of the 1998 track.
The late night talk show host asked Brandy, 46, if it was true that she got the idea for the concept from watching The Jerry Springer Show.
She confirmed it and explained: 'Yes, I was a huge Jerry Springer fan, and one of the topics was, "The boy is mine." I'm like, "Oh my god, song idea. Let's do this."'
After getting the inspiration, Brandy said she knew she wanted to get Monica, 44, to work with her on the song — which was also a source of inspiration for the same-name song on Ariana Grande 's latest album Eternal Sunshine.
'I was always a fan of hers and I wanted to work with her, so I called her up and asked her to be a part of the song, and she said yes,' she recalled. 'And here we are.'
When they started working together, Monica said she told Brandy that she thought people would believe they were fighting over a man because of the nature of the song.
'That was the point,' Brandy then added.
The Jerry Springer Show was also included in a snippet of the original music video accompanying Brandy and Monica's beloved duet.
At the beginning of the video, Brandy is seen watching the daytime talk show that ran from 1991 to 2018.
Then, Monica is seen changing the channel.
When Brandy changes it back, the two squabble over the TV right before the song starts.
The song was an instant hit and spent 13 weeks at the top of the Billboard charts as well as winning the dynamic duo a Grammy.

Many years later, the pair released another duet titled It All Belongs to Me in 2012.
After releasing their second duet, the pair were rumoed to be in a longstanding feud.
When Ariana Grande asked them to join in on her remix, they agreed and credited the pop star for reuniting them again and bridging the gap.
Last year, Brandy and Monica earned their 13th and fifth Grammy nominations, respectively, due to their features on Grande's The Boy Is Mine remix.
Last summer, Monica said that 'the process of the new collaboration did a lot of closing the gaps.'
She told ET: 'When you properly communicate something, you can find not only the resolutions and solutions to problems, but sometimes you find that there weren't ever problems, just consistent miscommunications. It made it a lot easier just to talk.'
Earlier this week, the R&B icons announced their first-ever joint tour, more than 25 years after releasing The Boy Is Mine.
The pair will be going on a 24-city arena tour alongside opening acts Kelly Rowland, Muni Long and Jamal Roberts of American Idol.
Their tour will kick off on October 16 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
And the pair will perform in cities across the United States before closing out the American tour in Houston, Texas on December 7.

Ryan Reynolds' pal Rob McElhenney files to legally change his name and reveals why
Rob McElhenney is tired of having so many syllables in his last name. The It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star, 49, filed legal documents in Los Angeles to officially change his name, TMZ reported. Rob Mac is what he's going with, eliminating most of the name that has been difficult and annoying for the co-owner (with Ryan Reynolds) of Wrexham's football club. His More Better Productions has been investing in soccer teams in South America and he finds South Americans can't wrap their tongues around his multi-syllabic surname. He's been going by Rob Mac in his business endeavors for awhile. 'As our business and our storytelling is expanding into other regions of the world and other languages in which my name is even harder to pronounce, I'm just going by Rob Mac,' he told Variety last month. Rob was worried he might ruffle the feathers of his ancestors with the name change. However, he soon learned that he wasn't going to be the first McElhenney to change their moniker. Some relatives had already made their own changes to their last name over the years. And those that hadn't changed their name were excited to do so when they learned that he was. His wife, High Potential and Hacks star Kaitlin Olson and their two teenage boys are still getting used to the Rob Mac idea. 'The kids are really not happy about it, because they have that last name,' Olson said. 'And so do I, legally!' Rob and Kaitlyn met on the set of It's Always Sunny in 2005 and began secretly dating during the FX comedy's second season. They married in Malibu in September 2008 and welcomed their sons in 2010 and 2012, respectively. Rob Mac is what he's going with, eliminating most of the name that has been difficult and annoying for the co-owner (with Ryan Reynolds ) of Wrexham's football club. Seen here November 17, 2022 But they almost didn't meet as Rob wasn't thrilled to be casting Kaitlyn in Its Always Sunny. Sunny came out of a low-budget project that Rob Mac, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton dreamed up. At her audition, Olson read with Day, while her future husband directed. At one point, he told her to improvise. 'I let go of the already funny stuff and concentrated on leveling up the rest of the material,' Olson recalled to Variety. 'After, I called my manager and said, "The audition was great. I want this job. But I'm so pissed that I left out the funniest line that was already in there, because I was so focused on just making everything bounce better,"' she said. As it turns out, McElhenney wrote that funny line. 'So she leaves the room, we're no doubt 100% thinking she was awesome,' McElhenney remembered. 'But I don't know if her instincts were 100% right, because she left out the funniest line,' he said. 'Now, is it a coincidence that I happened to write that line? I was 26 years old, and probably very precious with what I was writing,' Rob explained. Fortunately, Rob's partners talked him out of discarding Kaitlin for the role of Sweet Dee. When he called to offer her the project, she turned it down because she discovered the funny lines she was reading weren't for her character. 'When they offered me the part, I asked for four scripts,' she said. 'And I was shocked, because they didn't have anything funny for Sweet Dee.' Sweet Dee was written as a nag, whereas the guys all got the jokes to deliver. McElhenney explained that with their shoestring budget, they hadn't been able to write new scripts to reflect where they wanted to go with Dee. He promised his future wife her character would be funny and Olson gave in and joined the cast.

Fans furious as new drama series is canceled after CLIFFHANGER finale
One of the most popular new dramas on NBC has been canceled after just one season. Despite earning praise from fans and critics, Grosse Pointe Garden Society has been axed. According to Deadline, NBCUniversal executives considered continuing the series exclusively on Peacock, where it had started charting in the streamer's top 10. However, the move would've 'required financial resources from Peacock that had not been allocated' and audience projections weren't high enough to justify it. The cancellation has enraged fans as the season one finale featured a major cliffhanger that was presumably set to be resolved in an expected second season. 'Oh come on. This was actually good. You guys didn't give it a chance changing the night and whatnot. Boo @nbc @peacock,' commented one. '@NBC is the like Netflix. Cancel shows without giving them time to build an audience. Glad I cancelled @peacock,' wrote another. 'Not surprised but I was hoping they would give it a chance,' wrote a third. Set in the upscale Detroit suburb of Grosse Pointe, Michigan, the show centers around four members of a local garden club whose lives begin to unravel after they become entangled in a murder at their club. To cover their tracks, they bury the body in their garden and destroy key evidence, all while juggling their own personal secrets and dramas. The series also time hops, showing the group before the murder and then afterwards to show how the scandal has affected their lives and friendships. The first season concluded with a cryptic Halloween scene: Birdie, Brett, and Catherine confront a person in a duck costume, but their identity isn't revealed. Grosse Pointe Garden Society stars AnnaSophia Robb, Ben Rappaport, and Melissa Fumero. There's been a number of major TV cancellations in recent weeks. HGTV just axed Farmhouse Fixer, Bargain Block, Married to Real Estate, and Izzy Does It in a shocking cancellation spree. Nickelodeon's The Tiny Chef Show also just got the axe. The animated series follows the life of Tiny Chef (voice by Matt Hutchinson), who speaks his very own language, creating a selection of tasty dishes in his tree stump. Last month, The Wheel of Time was canceled after three seasons at Amazon Prime. No reason was given for canceling the series starring Rosamund Pike and Barney Harris, however, Deadline reported that it was likely financial reasons. The series is based on the novels of the same name by Robert Jordan.

But Shakira and Toni were watching the pair and Shakira warned: 'She's what he'd go for in the outside world.' 'Don't put demons in my head,' Toni replied. Shakira continued: 'I just don't want you to look like a mug… I see that he's still invested in other people and I don't want you to be all in for him.' Helena then called it quits with Giorgio and headed to the Hideaway Terrace with Harrison as Toni watched on. After they returned to the garden Harrison and Toni talked at the Firepit. She told him: 'We just went on a f***ing date yesterday and you're already going to the Hideaway with another girl.' He then admitted that he and Helena had a kiss on the terrace. "I hope you enjoyed it," retorted Toni. She then remarked that she thinks it's weird that Helena is smiling at her knowing that she likes Harrison. Love Island shock as Remell and Megan are sent packing in savage dumping Helena told Toni to shut the f*** up and Shakira told her not to say that.
