18 days on, Amarnath yatra crosses 3 lakh mark

The Pahalgam attack has failed to deter the pilgrims from the annual Amarnath Yatra as the number of yatris crossed 3 lakh mark on Sunday, just 18 days after it commenced. J&k LG Manoj Sinha at Baltal base camp in Ganderbal district on Sunday. (PTI) As the milestone was achieved, J&K lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha visited Baltal base camp in Ganderbal to review the arrangements for the ongoing pilgrimage. 'By the grace of Amarnath Ji, the holy pilgrimage has surpassed the 3 lakh mark today. This sacred journey is a deeply enriching experience. May Baba's blessings bring peace, strength and fulfilment to all. Har Har Mahadev!,' Sinha said on X. Before the yatra started on July 3, the LG, in a press conference, had informed that only one-third of the pilgrims registered for this year's Amarnath Yatra, before the Pahalgam terror attack, had confirmed their travel to the cave shrine. Overall pilgrim registration had dropped by over 10% from last year in the wake of the April 22 attack. Sinha had pointed out that around 2,36,000 pilgrims had registered for the yatra before the terror attack that left 26 people — mostly tourists — dead at picturesque Baisaran meadows. That number has already been crossed now and the footfall is continuing even as there are still 20 more days to go as the yatra is scheduled to conclude on Aug 09. Last year, around 5,12,000 pilgrims had performed the yatra, the highest in over a decade. Sinha interacted with pilgrims to receive their feedback on essential facilities. 'Departments are working with dedication to ensure the pilgrims have comfortable darshan,' he said. Every year, hundreds of thousands of Hindu devotees from across the country visit the Amarnath cave shrine situated at a height of 3,880 metre in the Himalayas passing through treacherous mountain routes, glaciers and ice fed streams. Pahalgam is one of the two main base camps of the Amarnath yatra. 'The numbers have crossed 3 lakh in just 18 days. This year very sensitive arrangements have been made for secure environment of yatra like security arrangements, track and food and stay. We are getting good feedback from yatris,' said Shahid Choudhary, administrative secretary to government and nodal officer of yatra.

6,365 pilgrims leave Jammu for Amarnath yatra

Jammu, July 19 (UNI) A fresh batch of over 6,000 pilgrims of the Shri Amarnath Yatra, chanting 'Bam Bam Bhole', set out for the holy cave shrine in the South Kashmir Himalayas from the Yatri Niwas base camp today at Bhagwati Nagar, Jammu. 'A fresh batch of 6,365 pilgrims left this morning for the Shri Amarnath cave shrine in Kashmir from the Jammu base camp amid tight security arrangements,' officials said. Of them, 2,851 pilgrims were headed for Pahalgam and 3,514 for Baltal, travelling in a convoy of 211 vehicles, including both Light and Heavy Motor Vehicles. The 38-day annual pilgrimage began simultaneously from both routes following the flag-off of the first batch by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on July 2. The yatra is scheduled to conclude on August 9. So far, more than 2 lakh pilgrims have paid obeisance at the shrine. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant-Governor had on June 17 passed orders to declare the twin routes for the Amarnath Yatra as 'no-flying zones' between July 1 and August 10. An official spokesperson said the J&K Home Department, on the orders of the L-G, issued 'strict security directives regarding aerial activity during the upcoming Amarnath Yatra'. Officials said the measure was taken 'to ensure strengthened security during the yatra'. Any kind of aviation platforms and devices, including UAVs, drones, and balloons, would be prohibited on both the Pahalgam axis (in south Kashmir) and Baltal axis (in central Kashmir). UNI VBH AAB

Tourism at Malarikkal blossoms into sustainable model for farmer income

Malarikkal, a destination known for its breathtaking fields of blooming water lilies, is now evolving into a model of sustainable tourism that directly benefits the local farming community. An agreement has now been reached between the J-Block and the Thiruvaykkari polder committees, spanning 1,800 acres and 850 acres respectively in Thiruvarppu grama panchayat, and local country boat operators who ferry visitors through the wetlands covered with water lilies. As per the agreement, a part of the revenue generated from tourism will be utilised for the upkeep of the fields, especially to repair bunds damaged by country boat movement and to strengthen the outer embankments of the paddy fields. 'To ensure organised and equitable operations, designated landing points will be set up in each padasekharam in coordination with the respective farmer committees. Country boats will operate on a rotational basis, allowing fair participation of all operators. Strict safety protocols, including mandatory use of life jackets, will be in place. All country boats will be registered and the destination will function as a model for responsible tourism,' said K. Anil Kumar, convener of the Meenachil-Meenanthara-Kodoor river relinking programme. Traffic management With Malarikkal now officially recognised as a tourism zone, traffic management has become a key focus. Visitors will be required to park their vehicles near Kanjiram Palam and proceed to Malarikkal Junction. Parking has been made compulsory and additional private parking areas have been set up, which are accessible for a fee. To preserve the natural charm and orderliness of the area, no temporary or permanent commercial establishments will be allowed along the newly widened tourism road. Unauthorised stalls and structures will be removed by the Public Works department. Country boat operators, as part of the standardised system, will wear uniforms for easy identification and added professionalism. All decisions regarding the smooth conduct of this year's Malarikkal Lotus Festival were taken jointly during a meeting convened by the Thiruvarppu grama panchayat, Malarikkal Tourism Society and the J-Block and Thiruvaykkari polder committees on Thursday.
