Pepple relishing fight for Argyle starting spot

Pepple relishing fight for Argyle starting spot

Yahoo3 days ago
Plymouth Argyle striker Bim Pepple says he is relishing the competition for the place as the Pilgrims' starting centre forward.
Pepple, 22, has joined the club from Luton Town after spending the past two seasons on loan at Bromley, Inverness, Chesterfield and Southend United.
He is one of two young forwards Argyle have brought in this summer, alongside 22-year-old Owen Aseni, who joined from St Mirren.
Pilgrims head coach Tom Cleverley has stated he is still hoping to sign an experienced striker to complement the younger players as Argyle aim to return to the Championship after relegation last season.
"I think all the big clubs in world football, you have people battling for competition," Pepple told BBC Radio Devon.
"Right now, there's still competition between me and Owen, but it's healthy competition - we're pushing each other, we're giving each other tips.
"Owen's probably a bit better running in behind so I ask him 'How do you time your runs?' and he asks me 'How do you hold the ball up so well?' and we're kind of growing together.
"Whoever comes in we're sure is going to add as well and it's going to be healthy competition.
"But at the end of the day we just want to go up, so the more people who can come in and help us score goals and help to take the club up it's good for us."
Pepple says the Argyle squad is focused on promotion after coming down last season.
The Pilgrims have seen a host of experienced players leave the club with 10 new faces coming in, and more still expected.
Pepple says with so many new players, as well as a new management and coaching team, there is not the same relegation hangover as there might be for other clubs.
"It's something new and it's a new energy," he says. "No one's really focused on the relegation from last season, which is quite good and you won't get that everywhere.
"So it's just for us now to transfer that onto the pitch.
"We're still aware of what happened last season, we know that's not acceptable, but it's something new and all of us are excited, we all want to be here.
"We all love coming in every day, we're all so happy we're here - we just want to repay the faith that's been put in a lot of us young players to come in now and push this club back to where it belongs."

England's Lionesses Take ‘Football Home' With Gripping Euro Win

England's nail-biting, come-from-behind victory over Spain in the European women's soccer championship on Sunday electrified the country, with euphoric fans cheering something utterly new for them: the dawn of a national soccer dynasty. England, the defending champion, edged out Spain in a penalty shootout to hold on to the title it won in 2022, after conceding the first goal, as it had in both its quarterfinal and semifinal games. The victory avenged England after its heartbreaking defeat to Spain in the World Cup women's championship two years ago. It also stamped the women's team, nicknamed the Lionesses, as the proud standard-bearer for English soccer. England's men's team, known as the Three Lions, have not won a major championship since 1966, becoming a byword for sporting misery in a country that views itself as the home of soccer. Instead, it is the Lionesses who have become regulars at the pinnacle of international soccer, showing grit and steely nerves as they rebounded from a sloppy start in the early games of this tournament, played in Switzerland. 'We've not made it easy for ourselves, we love the drama,' said Bethany Madden, 26, who watched the game with friends on two large television screens at the Victoria pub in southeast London. 'But it's made it such an exciting tournament. You can never rule the Lionesses out.' Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

AUSL crowns inaugural champion as Talons claim sotball title with late home run

The first-ever Athletes Unlimited Softball League championship goes to the top-seeded Talons. After winning a rain-delayed Game 1 in the AUSL championship series, the Talons completed the two-game sweep of the Bandits on Sunday, July 27 with another delayed victory at Rhoads Softball Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Sydney Romero's solo home run with one out in the top of the sixth inning broke a scoreless tie and provided the winning margin in a 1-0 championship-clinching victory. It was the former Oklahoma star's first homer of the postseason and just her second of the season. The first game in the best-of-three series was postponed a day earlier in the bottom of the sixth inning on Saturday as the Talons led the Bandits 3-1. ` With the skies clear on Sunday morning, the Talons closed out the victory to put themselves on the brink of a title. Romero, Fouts star in Game 2 Game 2 was a classic pitcher's duel between the Talons' Montana Fouts and the Bandits' Taylor McQuillin. They matched zeroes through the first four frames before the rain forced another delay in the top of the fifth inning. Once the skies cleared, Fouts – playing on the same field where she starred collegiately at Alabama – returned to the mound for the Talons. Meanwhile, the Bandits turned to their ace Lexi Kilfoyl, who took the loss in Game 1. With the game still scoreless in the sixth, Romero caught up with a fastball at the top of the strike zone and deposited it over the wall in left field to break the scoreless tie. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bandits' Bubba Nickles-Camarena nearly tied the game with a long drive that hit just a few inches away from clearing the wall in left-center field. But she was erased one batter later on a line drive that was snagged by Talons first baseman Tori Vidalis, who dove back to the bag and beat Nickles-Camarena for the double play. Fouts then struck out Bella Dayton to complete the shutout and the championship-clinching 1-0 victory. King urges Lionesses to target World Cup glory after ‘great pride' of Euros win

The King has congratulated England on retaining their Women's European Championship crown, saying it is a source of 'great pride' for the country. England beat world champions Spain 3-1 on penalties in the Euro 2025 final in Basel after a 1-1 draw to defend the title they won three years ago. Writing a message entitled 'Congratulations England' on the The Royal Family X account, Charles said: 'This brings you, your manager and all your support team my most heartfelt congratulations on winning the Euros 2025. 'For more years than I care to remember, England fans have sung that famous chant 'football's coming home'. 'As you return home with the trophy you won at Wembley three years ago, it is a source of great pride that, through sporting skill and awesome teamwork, the Lionesses have made those words ring true. For this, you have my whole family's warmest appreciation and admiration. 'More than that, though, you have shown through your example over past weeks that there are no setbacks so tough that defeat cannot be transformed into victory, even as the final whistle looms. 'Well done, Lionesses. The next task is to bring home the World Cup in 2027 if you possibly can!' The Prince of Wales was spotted in the stands applauding and celebrating with those around him – including his daughter Princess Charlotte. William was among those to heap praise on striker Michelle Agyemang, who was named young player of the tournament. As the presentation ceremony took place, William exchanged words with Agyemang, appearing to say, 'Well played, fantastic, well done'. William later wrote on X: 'What a game! @lionesses, you are the champions of Europe and we couldn't be prouder of the whole team. 'Enjoy this moment @england. W & Charlotte.' Sir Keir Starmer also offered his congratulations after England's victory in Switzerland. In a post on X, the Prime Minister said: 'Champions! Congratulations @Lionesses – what a team. What a game. What drama. 'You dug deep when it mattered most and you've made the nation proud. History makers.' Lisa Nandy, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, said: 'What an absolutely extraordinary achievement by our Lionesses – once again they have made history and united the country with pride and joy. 'The Lionesses have not just won a tournament – they have inspired millions with their skill, determination and heart. Huge congratulations to Sarina Wiegman, her brilliant squad, and everyone who has supported them on this incredible journey.' Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham paid tribute to the Lionesses' creating English football history and said a victory parade in London on Tuesday would 'give England fans an opportunity to celebrate with the players'. He said: 'Our history-making Lionesses are champions of Europe for the second successive time, and have become the first England Senior team in history to win a tournament overseas. 'We are so proud of all of the players, Sarina and the support team who have all been part of this incredible achievement. 'They have all worked unbelievably hard and we know the nation shares our pride. The victory celebration in London on Tuesday will give England fans an opportunity to celebrate with the players, and be part of history. 'We've had amazing support from our fans both in Switzerland and at home throughout the tournament, and we look forward to celebrating together and creating some lifelong memories.'
