Maryland hero Derik Queen enters NBA draft
April 5 - Maryland big man Derik Queen is saying good-bye to the school after one season and declaring for the NBA draft.
The 6-foot-10 Queen made his announcement on ESPN, saying "I'm entering the 2025 NBA Draft."
The star freshman from Baltimore averaged 16.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in 36 games for the Terrapins. The first-team All-Big Ten selection is projected to be a lottery pick and could move into the top 10.
Queen's ability to handle pressure was on display in the second round of the NCAA Tournament when he made the decisive game-ending bank shot in a 72-71 victory over Colorado State that vaulted the Terrapins into the Sweet 16.
Queen finished his season with 27 points in an 87-71 loss to Florida.
Asked for his top memories at Maryland, just one exploit was mentioned.
"Of course, the Colorado State shot," Queen said. "Then me and my teammates being around each other all the time, those are my guys and I'm going to miss those moments."

Lakers waive guards Shake Milton, Jordan Goodwin
July 21 - The Los Angeles Lakers waived guards Shake Milton and Jordan Goodwin, the team announced on Sunday night in moves creating roster space for the expected signing of veteran guard Marcus Smart. Multiple media outlets reported on Saturday that Smart, a former NBA Defensive Player of the Year, has agreed to a contract buyout with the Washington Wizards with the intention of playing for the Lakers. A three-time first-team all-defense selection, Smart, 31, will reportedly ink a two-year, $11 million deal with the Lakers after clearing waivers. The new contract will include a player option that could allow the guard to enter free agency in 2026. Milton, 28, averaged a combined 5.5 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 14.7 minutes in 57 games (two starts) for the Brooklyn Nets (27 games) and Lakers (30) last season. The Dallas Mavericks selected Milton in the second round (54th overall) of the 2018 NBA Draft out of SMU and traded him the same day to the Philadelphia 76ers. Goodwin, 26, averaged 5.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 18.7 minutes in 29 regular-season games (five starts) for the Lakers last season. Trump threatens Washington stadium deal unless NFL team readopts Redskins name
July 20 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump threatened on Sunday to interfere with a deal to build a new football stadium in Washington, D.C., unless the local NFL team, now known as the Commanders, changes its name back to Redskins. The American football team dropped the name Redskins in 2020 after decades of criticism that it was a racial slur with links to the U.S. genocide of the Indigenous population. Trump had called for a return to the name Redskins - and for the Cleveland Guardians baseball team to once again adopt the name Indians - on other occasions, but on Sunday he added that he may take official action. "I may put a restriction on them that if they don't change the name back to the original 'Washington Redskins,' and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, 'Washington Commanders,' I won't make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington," Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform. The team moved from Washington to suburban Landover, Maryland, in 1997, but earlier this year reached an agreement with the local District of Columbia government to return to the city with a new stadium expected to open in 2030. Trump has limited authority to intervene under the current home-rule law governing federal oversight of the District of Columbia, but he has raised the prospect of taking more control, telling reporters in February, "I think we should take over Washington, D.C." Representatives of the Commanders did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Some fans have advocated readopting the name Redskins out of tradition, but leading Indigenous rights organizations have opposed the name, including the National Congress of American Indians, the Association on American Indian Affairs, and Cultural Survival. At least one group, the Native American Guardian's Association, has supported the name Redskins and the "respectful use of Native American names and imagery in sports, education and public life."
