Runcorn and Helsby by-election: Reform's newest MP hails victory
LIVE: Reform wins Runcorn by-election by just six votes, while Labour wins three mayoral races
Amesbury, who won the newly created seat at the July 2024 general election with a 14,696 majority, was caught in widely shared CCTV footage punching a constituent in a drunken row.He subsequently stepped down after admitting assault. At the by-election count in Widnes, Pochin said: "It would be an honour and a privilege to serve this community, a community of hard-working people who just want fairness. "Going forward, I will do my best for all you in Runcorn and Helsby... regardless of how you voted, and I will be accessible to you all."Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said: "It's the closest by-election since the war and I think one of the most dramatic. But I sense, also, one of the most significant."
A Labour spokesperson said: "Voters are still rightly furious with the state of the country after 14 years of failure and clearly expect the government to move faster with the Plan for Change."While Labour has suffered an extremely narrow defeat, the shock is that the Conservative vote has collapsed."The spokesperson claimed moderate voters were "clearly appalled by the talk of a Tory-Reform pact".
Farage, MP for Clacton in Essex, said the result showed Reform were "not a protest party". "Thirty years ago, Parliament was full of people like [Sarah Pochin] that had successful careers, as she's had in business, in politics, in judiciary and now there are very few of them," he said. "We're putting candidates up, getting people elected with real life experience and that's what voters want."The Conservatives, whose candidate Sean Houlston came a distant third, called the by-election result a "damning verdict" on Sir Keir Starmer's leadership.A Tory spokesperson said: "Just 10 months ago Labour won an enormous majority, including in this seat with 52% of the vote, but their policies have been a punch in the face for the people of Runcorn."Snatching Winter Fuel Payments from vulnerable pensioners, pushing farmers to the brink with their vindictive Family Farms Tax and hammering families with a £3,500 jobs tax, families are being punished for their disastrous decisions in government."There was a turnout of 46% in the by-election, compared with 59% at last year's general election.

Reform's 19-year-old council leader risks contempt of court over rape case comments
A Reform UK council leader risks being found in contempt of court after making a number of statements about the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl during a press conference in London. It comes after Ahmad Mulakhil, 23, was charged with the rape of a girl in Nuneaton last week. Meanwhile, Mohammad Kabir, also 23, was charged with kidnap and strangulation. Warwickshire Police has not released the immigration status of the two suspects. George Finch - the 19-year-old Warwickshire county council leader - risks having broken the law with a comment he made about the case. Contempt of court refers to behaviour that interferes with the administration of justice or undermines the authority of the court. The Independent is not able to repeat a number of claims Mr Finch makes in the press conference without the newspaper risking contempt of court. At one point during the press conference, Mr Finch acknowledged the risks attached to talking about a live legal case, saying: 'I was told if I released this, I'd be in contempt of court.' The youngest council leader in the country claimed there has been a 'cover-up' of details about the case. It came as Nigel Farage suggested police forces should release information including immigration status about people who are charged with crimes. The Reform UK leader said that he 'absolutely' believes that information should be made available by police forces. In a statement, Warwickshire Police said that once someone is charged with an offence, they follow national guidance, which 'does not include sharing ethnicity or immigration status'. Mr Finch told Monday's press conference that he was 'begging' for information about the two to be released in the wake of the charges. He said he had emailed the council's chief executive to say that he wished to speak to the police force and urge them to release information about the men's immigration status. Mr Finch also said he had later written a letter to home secretary Yvette Cooper and the chief constable of Warwickshire Police calling for the immediate release of the immigration status of the two. Mr Finch also claimed that Reform UK needs to 'change things' and is 'the last line of defence against the blob, the cover-ups'.

DARREN LEWIS: Angry mobs could do well to remember the facts about asylum-seekers
Social media has replaced Enoch Powell's racist scaremongering with shameful attempts to minimise the work of low-paid immigrants who rebuilt this country after the Second World War, writes Darren Lewis In the sequel to the legendary Die Hard movie, Bruce Willis wonders out loud: 'How can the same thing happen to the same guy twice?' With Nigel Farage making infinitely more serious hay from the Epping asylum-seeker crisis, anything is possible. Because it has been quite something to watch the professional xenophobes and racist thugs on social media agitating to riot like it's 2024. Add the willingness of sections of the mainstream media to platform – and continue to drip-feed – bigotry and you can see why work is needed to dial down the temperature this summer. Caught in the cross-fire of the Epping situation are a number of homeless families, legitimate citizens of this country temporarily housed there long before this crisis, ahead of moves to more permanent accommodation. Friends living in the area report those families have been left terrified by the angry mobs targeting asylum seekers at a hotel. Deputy PM Angela Rayner's comments, suggesting tensions around immigration and falling living standards could lead to more riots, are just as concerning. What on earth is this government doing? Why would anyone in a position of political influence accentuate the negative and appear to provide the justification for groups to choose violence as an answer for their frustrations? The people whose businesses were trashed 12 months ago, dragged from the cars at intersections on the basis of their skin colour and singled out to be attacked in parks – they won't thank politicians for being so careless with their language. They matter. You expect it from Farage. He has been on TV crowing about the tensions in Epping reflecting the nation's mood. They don't – a small number of extremists have infiltrated social media to gain traction. They reflect the toxic atmosphere Farage remains desperate to cultivate here. The kind of climate where masked operatives pull up in people carriers and drag Black and Brown people off the street as they do in America. There can be little doubt that such a place is where the liars, thugs and those who wish to divide us want to take us. So, some facts for you. It isn't illegal to claim asylum. That right remains enshrined in the 1951 Refugee Convention. The majority of asylum seekers live in low or middle-income countries, most of them close to the places they fled. The asylum-seeker problem exists here because the government makes almost no safe and legal route available to any refugee other than someone from Ukraine. For everyone else, the Tories' Nationality and Borders Act 2022 means you need to be here to claim asylum. It was a deliberate act to frame everyone arriving here in need as an illegal. The current government – desperate to curry favour with the online Right – has no intention of changing things any time soon. Yet even that isn't enough for the xenophobes. 'Stop the boats' remains a cover for extremists to continue their quest to purge this country of Black and Brown people. The UK's underfunded welfare system has been broken for decades and remains nothing to do with immigration. And yet social media has replaced Enoch Powell's racist scaremongering with shameful attempts to minimise the work of low-paid immigrants who rebuilt this country after the Second World War. And, no, not every person targeted by the systematic, multi-platform disinformation campaign to frame migrants as an existential threat is racist. Many are simply reacting to the lies they are being fed. The racists are the ones doing what the likes of Oswald Mosley, Enoch Powell, Nick Griffin, Suella Braverman, Priti Patel, Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak and Nigel Farage have done for years – injecting their divisive poison into the nation's bloodstream. That poison is threatening to take effect again this summer. It is incumbent on all forms of media to reject it in favour of preserving people's safety. We know what they did last summer. Let's stop them.

Highland Council set for by-election after Green quits
Andrew Baldrey, who represented Caol and Mallaig on Highland Council, has stepped down from the local authority. Baldrey was one of three councillors – along with the LibDems' John Grafton and Tories' Liz Saggers – to have won a seat in the 2022 local elections without a contest. Only three people put their names forward to represent Caol and Mallaig, which can return four councillors. As such, Baldrey, Grafton, and Saggers all won seats without a single vote being cast. Now, Baldrey has resigned his position, sparking a by-election in the ward. Highland Council said in a statement: 'A Highland Council by-election is being held for Ward 11 Caol and Mallaig following the resignation of Councillor Andrew Baldrey. 'The Notice of Election and timetable for this election will be published on the Council's website on Friday 15 August, 2025. 'Prospective candidates will have until 4pm on Monday 25 August, 2025 to submit their completed nomination forms. 'If the seat is contested, voting will take place on Thursday 25 September 2025 with an electronic count taking place on Friday 26 September 2025.'
