Tigers 'strongly interested' in pair of Twins righty relievers
Ahead of the MLB trade deadline, the Detroit Tigers have a few areas they are planning to address. A third baseman is of interest, as is a starting pitcher. But, one of the more pressing needs for Detroit is in the bullpen. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Tigers are one of many teams that are interested in Minnesota Twins relievers Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax. While it'd be a rare in-division deal, the Tigers could pull such a move off if they want either of the two. Advertisement "The Philadelphia Phillies have been extensively scouting Minnesota Twins relievers Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax..." Nightengale writes, "The Twins are also drawing strong interest from the Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Cincinnati Reds." Duran and Jax are the Twins' top relievers, and with both potentially available, either would be a nice pickup for the Tigers' bullpen. Both are under team control through 2027, and both are righties. While the Tigers could use a lefty to pair with right-handers Will Vest and Tommy Kahnle, it wouldn't exclude the Tigers from landing a strong righty reliever. If the righty ended up as either Duran or Jax, it'd be a nice move. Jax, meanwhile, has a 4.02 ERA with 65 strikeouts and 10 walks across 40.1 innings pitched. While Duran has been better this season, in 2024, Jax was better. He had a 2.03 ERA and 95 strikeouts, and 15 walks in 71 innings pitched. Duran has a 3.64 ERA, 66 strikeouts, and 15 walks in 54.1 innings pitched. Both Twins relievers had a strong and decent season over the last two years. Either the 27-year-old Duran or the 30-year-old Jax would be nice acquisitions if the Tigers can pull it off. This report from Nightengale suggests the Tigers are strongly interested in Twins' relievers John Duran and Griffin Jax. Astros' Isaac Paredes will miss the All-Star Game because of a family matter
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Astros third baseman Isaac Paredes has dropped out of next week's All-Star Game to attend to a family matter. Paredes was added to the roster Wednesday after Cleveland's José Ramírez opted out to rest a nagging Achilles tendon injury. Advertisement Paredes was in the Astros' lineup at designated hitter Sunday for the finale of a series against the Texas Rangers and manager Joe Espada said he wouldn't miss any time after the break because of the issue. 'Oh yeah, he'll be back,' Espada said. 'He just needs to go and spend some time and take care of some family matters, but … he's fine.' It was the second straight season Paredes had been named an All-Star. The 26-year-old is in his first season with the Astros after a trade from the Cubs. Jaylen Brown: 'I disagree' with how Celtics have used me
2024 Boston Celtics Finals MVP Jaylen Brown got surprisingly candid about his nine-year tenure with the franchise during an expansive new summer interview with Noa Dalzell of SB Nation. 'It's been a long journey here in Boston,' Brown said. 'I've had to deal with a lot. I feel like I haven't been able to be myself in certain capacities — because of the politics, and because maybe people feel uncomfortable with who I am.' An MIT Media Lab fellow in 2019, Brown created the Bridge Program — a mentorship program for Boston-area students of color looking explore STEM program careers. He has strived to use his platform to deal with income inequality and education disparities. On the court, too, Brown explains that he's been frustrated with some of the ways the Celtics have used him. 'I disagree with a lot of things,' Brown said. 'I've had to change roles, styles. I've had to do things that other players of my talent just haven't had to do, and I've been okay with them, because I've always been a team guy. I feel like sometimes that gets taken for granted.' During his first few seasons in the league, Brown was coached by now-general manager Brad Stevens, and saw his role fluctuate as he adjusted to more established All-Stars like Isaiah Thomas, Kyrie Irving and Al Horford. Advertisement Now, the Celtics belong to Brown and six-time All-Star Jayson Tatum. Last year with the Celtics, the 6-foot-6 University of California at Berkeley product averaged 22.2 points on .463/.324/.764 shooting splits, 5.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists, while making his fourth All-Star team. The 28-year-old likely would have been a prime contender to notch his second All-NBA honor, but missed out by only playing in 63 contests due to injuries. Players need to be available for 65 or more games to be named to an All-NBA team. Boston has appeared in two NBA Finals in the last four seasons, winning in 2024. 'I'm extremely grateful that we won a championship,' Brown said. 'I'm extremely grateful that we've been able to have success, and that's what it's about. It's not all about you, it's not all about me, you know what I mean? I want the next generation to know that as well — it's okay to play your role on the team. It's okay to do whatever, but don't let that define you.' Advertisement At 28, he has absolutely come into his own.
