Turkiye grants visas to stranded Iraqis as Basra reopens for flights
In a statement, Ambassador Majid Al-Lajmawi said that the Iraqi Embassy in Ankara is closely coordinating with Turkish authorities to facilitate the issuance of five-day entry visas for stranded Iraqi nationals.
'The measure follows directives from Iraq's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and aims to ensure an orderly and secure return of Iraqis stranded at Turkish airports due to recent regional developments that prompted the airspace shutdown.'
He also announced the launch of a new direct flight route between Dubai and Basra, operated by Iraqi Airways with two daily flights.
Iraq's Ministry of Transport recently confirmed that air traffic remains suspended across the country's airports—except for Basra International Airport, which reopened for daytime operations starting Sunday.
Additionally, the head of Iraq's Civil Aviation Authority, Benkin Rikani, noted that these measures fall under the broader efforts of the Iraqi government to secure an orderly and safe return for nationals affected by the ongoing regional crisis.

Iraq downs drone near Erbil airport hosting American forces
Erbil – A drone was intercepted late on Thursday near Erbil airport, which houses US-led anti-jihadist coalition troops in Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region, Kurdish security forces said. 'At 21:58 (1858 GMT) an explosive-packed drone was downed near Erbil International Airport, without causing casualties or damage,' said the counterterrorism services of the Kurdistan region. Erbil airport, which includes a military base of the international anti-jihadist coalition, was a frequent target in previous years for rocket and drone attacks. Dana Tofeek, the airport's interim director, told AFP that the airport is 'safe', adding that 'only one flight was slightly delayed due to security measures'. There has been no claim of responsibility for the drone. In less than two weeks, drone and rocket attacks have been reported in different parts of Iraq, including drones that landed in open spaces. Earlier on Thursday, an explosive-packed drone fell near Kirkuk airport, which was struck on Monday by two rockets, a senior security official told AFP. Kirkuk airport hosts Iraqi army units, federal police and the Hashed al-Shaabi, a coalition of former pro-Iranian paramilitary forces now integrated into the regular armed forces. Early on Tuesday, Iraq's anti-aircraft defence engaged at least one drone near the key refinery of Baiji in Salaheddin province. Last week, hours before a ceasefire ended the 12-day Iran-Israel war, unidentified drones struck radar systems at two military bases in Baghdad and southern Iraq. Iraq has long been a battleground of drone and rocket assaults and proved fertile ground for proxy wars. It only recently regained a semblance of stability after decades of devastating conflicts and turmoil.

Kurdish militants in Iraqi Kurdistan to hand over weapons
Baghdad ( – In a step toward disarmament within a peace process, the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) declared on Thursday that its fighters in northern Iraq will begin giving over their weapons. According to a statement released by the PKK, a group of militants will leave the mountains and surrender their weapons in an attempt to demonstrate their support for democratic politics and peace. According to the statement, a ceremony scheduled between July 10 and 12 in the city of Sulaymaniyah in the Kurdistan region of Iraq will mark the first tangible step toward disarmament. The PKK announced a ceasefire with Turkey earlier in 2025 in response to a call from its leader, Abdullah Ocalan, who is presently serving a life sentence, to dismantle and disarm the organization. In late February, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs hailed the call made by Ocalan to his party to lay down arms. The ministry viewed this endeavor as a critical step in improving security throughout the region, not just in Iraq, where PKK fighters are active in various parts of Iraqi Kurdistan and a few other places. Turkey, the United States, and the European Union have all labeled the PKK, which has been fighting for decades, as a terrorist organization. The party's choice to dissolve is an important milestone in regional geopolitics and may alleviate long-standing tensions, particularly in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, where PKK members have remained.

Land Allocated for Economic City in Partnership with Elsewedy Electric

The Iraqi Cabinet has approved the allocation of part of plot (1/89, District 14, Al-Haswa), currently owned by the Ministry of Finance and designated for the Ministry of Defence, based on the Defence Ministry's actual land needs. A total of 2,400 dunams will be allocated to the Iraq Development Fund to contract with Elsewedy Electric for the establishment of an economic city, under the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding signed by both parties. The remaining land will be allocated to the National Investment Commission (NIC) for the development of large-scale economic cities. The Cabinet also approved an exemption from Cabinet Decision No. 169 of 2022 for this land allocation. (Source: PMO)
