MLB places Guardians pitcher Emmanuel Clase on paid leave as part of gambling investigation
Via Jeff Passan of ESPN.com, the MLB has placed closer Emmanuel Clase on 'non-disciplinary paid leave.'
Via Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal, Clase will be out through at least August 31.
Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz previously was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave, also through at least August 31. In a statement, the team said it has been informed that no other players or team personnel are expected to be affected by the ongoing situation.
It's just the latest sports controversy involving gambling, which has become widespread in recent years via the legalization of sports betting in most American state.
The NFL has had a handful of players suspended for betting violations. There has yet to be a pro football scandal involving any attempt to engineer the outcomes of games or prop bets.
It feels like it's just a matter of time. There is plenty of inside information that can be easily misused by players, coaches, and other personnel. A problem seems inevitable.

Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck to undergo Tommy John surgery
BOSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox right-hander Tanner Houck's attempt to come back this season is over. Manager Alex Cora said Saturday that Houck will undergo Tommy John surgery. An All-Star last season, the 29-year-old Houck went on the injured list in mid-May with a right flexor strain after going 0-3 with an 8.04 ERA in nine starts. 'Tanner's going to have Tommy John surgery,' Cora said before the Red Sox faced the Houston Astros at Fenway Park. 'He went to see Dr. Meister there in Texas and that was the recommendation,' Cora said. 'We don't have a date yet, but he's going to have it.' Houck had a strong 2024 season, finishing seventh in the American League with a 3.12 ERA in 30 starts, but was only able to make five rehab appearances after going on the IL. 'Tough year for him, tough year for us,' Cora said of the season-ending news. 'But he'll kill the rehab, he'll do his job, and when he comes back, he's going to be OK.' Houck earned his first All-Star appearance by going 8-6 with a 2.54 ERA in the first half. He struggled after the break, going 1-4 with a 4.23 ERA. He worked an inning at the All-Star Game in Texas last year, giving up three hits including a homer to Shohei Ohtani. He's the third Boston starting pitcher to suffer a season-ending injury. Hunter Dobbins tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee covering first base last month and Kutter Crawford underwent right wrist surgery. The team hopes the pickup of righty Dustin May at the trade deadline from the Los Angeles Dodgers will bolster the staff. He's expected to make his first start for the Red Sox on Wednesday at Fenway. 'It was definitely a ride of emotions, up and down,' said May, sitting in the dugout on Saturday of being dealt to Boston. 'Sad leaving because I've been there my whole career, but very, very excited to be joining this organization.' May knew his days as a starter with the Dodgers were likely coming to an end this season with a few starters expected to come off the injured list. 'I was kid of pushed out,' he said. Astros outlook after a shocking trade deadline
There is one thing that is true about the Jim Crane-owned Astros: they are inevitable and will do whatever it takes to position themselves to win. That was proven to everyone on Thursday as the Trade Deadline came to a close. Astros General Manager Dana Brown did a fantastic job at the deadline and has done a fantastic job of setting the Astros up for long-term success. The Astros struck a salary dump deal with the Minnesota Twins to acquire long-term Astro and former World Series champion, Carlos Correa. Correa, who left the Astros after 2021, had a no-trade clause and told the Twins that he would only waive it for Houston. After a slow start, Correa is back home and is hopeful of continuing his strong midseason success. Correa will shift to third base after Isaac Paredes suffered an injury, which will keep him out all year. The Astros and Miami Marlins also struck a deal for left-handed outfielder Jesús Sánchez. Sánchez is just what the Astros were looking for and will slot well into this lineup. Sánchez also brings two years of control with him, which helps the Astros long-term. The Astros made a trade with the Baltimore Orioles as well when they landed utility man Ramón Urías. Urías brings another Dubon-level player to Houston. He is a former gold glover and can play around the whole infield. Urías will be a depth and bench bat in Houston, but will be a great guy to have around.
