The Prime Minister and his entourage left via the Bukit Raya Complex in Sepang in a chartered flight. Anwar is set to meet captains of industry from 36 Italian firms, including multinational companies such as Leonardo SpA, STMicroelectronics and Ferrero during his maiden working visit. Malaysian Ambassador to Italy Datuk Zahid Rastam said the meeting will take place during the Malaysia-Italy Economic Partnership Roundtable on July 2. Putra Heights inferno: Affected consumers, residents to receive gas supply starting today, says DOSH

KUALA LUMPUR: Consumers affected by the April 1 gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights can now breathe a sigh of relief, as stable gas supply begins to be restored through temporary piping starting Tuesday (July 1). According to the Occupational Safety and Health Department (DOSH), a temporary gas pipeline measuring approximately 210m in length has been installed to replace the pipe damaged in the incident. "Soil improvement and stabilisation were carried out at the site using a bridge foundation support structure measuring approximately 8m by 100m to provide stronger support for the pipeline," DOSH said in a statement today. In addition, to ensure maximum safety, several stringent tests were conducted, including non-destructive testing (NDT) on welded joints and a 24-hour pressure test. It added that test results confirmed by DOSH and an independent third party showed no leakage or pressure drop. It also said that Phase Two of the project will involve replacing three gas pipelines, each approximately 200m long, at the affected sites. These pipes will be laid on concrete slab structures to ensure long-term safety and durability. "The engineering design for this phase is currently being finalised, with operations expected to commence in the third quarter of next year," it said. In addition, several geotechnical studies, including soil mapping, rock layer analysis, and ground movement monitoring, have been conducted to ensure the overall stability of the installation site. As an additional safety measure, PETRONAS has been instructed to provide real-time monitoring access to the pipe isolation valve system, enabling rapid closure in the event of an emergency. The department also assured that all work will be closely monitored and conducted impartially to safeguard the safety of workers, residents, and nearby businesses. "DOSH understands the urgent need for residents and businesses to have a safe and stable gas supply restored as soon as possible. We are committed to monitoring every stage of this project to ensure it is carried out responsibly and to restore consumer confidence in the safety of the gas pipeline system in the area," it added. The April 1 fire incident caused 81 homes to be completely destroyed, with structural damage exceeding 40 per cent, 81 homes partially damaged, 57 homes affected but not burned, and 218 homes left unaffected. - Bernama

Ahmad Zahid wants Malaysia's rural agenda to serve as regional model for Asean

PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed hope that Malaysia's rural development agenda can serve as a model for the Asean region. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, said his ministry would continue to elevate the rural development agenda to the regional stage when it hosts the Asean Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on the Asean Master Plan on Rural Development again this October. In addition, Malaysia would host the Asean+3 Forum on Empowering Rural Women and Digitalisation. "Let us use this platform to showcase our best practices and position Malaysia's rural development agenda as both a regional aspiration and reference point. Malaysia must set the example for the entire region," he said at the Rural and Regional Development Ministry's monthly assembly here on Tuesday (July 1). Ahmad Zahid said his ministry has been given the mandate to plan rural community development, with an allocation of nearly RM12bil, of which RM3.37bil has been spent to date. He said the recently launched Desa Kirana initiative was being hailed as a game changer in the lead-up to Visit Malaysia 2026. According to him, the initiative aims to boost rural tourism and strengthen the local economy by empowering cultural heritage, natural attractions, traditional cuisine, handicrafts and a variety of rural-based activities. "I hope to one day see our rural gems - from Arau to Kudat, from Sabah's interior to the coast of Sarawak - emerge as world-class tourist destinations. Just like Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland, Hobbiton in New Zealand, Shirakawa-go in Japan, or Ubud in Bali - places that were once quiet but now stand proudly on the global tourism map," he said. Ahmad Zahid also said that his ministry would organise a three-dimensional Mega Carnival, which will bring together three major events simultaneously: the Rural Entrepreneur Carnival, Felda Settlers' Day, and the One District One Industry initiative. "This marks another major shift - a strategic effort to elevate rural entrepreneurs and strengthen the rural entrepreneurship ecosystem at both the national and international levels," he said. Meanwhile, he also called on the ministry's secretary-general, Datuk Muhd Khair Razman Mohamed Annuar, to review the existing training system. During the assembly, Ahmad Zahid expressed his appreciation for the dedication and hard work of the ministry's staff throughout his 940-day leadership of the ministry. – Bernama
