Sarawak Children's Cancer Society (SCCS) has raised RM77,157 during the first leg of its 'GoBald 2025' campaign.
The annual awareness and fundraising campaign supports children and families battling childhood cancer.
During the first leg held at Permaisuri Imperial City Mall in Miri, 38 participants shaved their heads in solidarity with child patients and to raise funds for them.
'The theme for GoBald this year is 'Leave Your Mark', an invitation for everyone to be part of something bigger.
'GoBald is more than just a fundraiser –it's a movement of hope, courage and community.
'Every shaved head sends a powerful message that our children do not walk this journey alone,' said SCCS president Mary Kiu Ai Ling.
She expressed gratitude to each participant, donor and event partner who continued to support the society's mission to improve the lives of children with cancer.
Since its launch in March, GoBald 2025 has seen a steady rise in registrations.
To date, around 150 participants from across Malaysia have joined the campaign, raising over RM390,000 from more than 1,200 donors.
'In 2024, GoBald raised over RM781,000 with more than 290 participants shaving their heads,' said Kiu.
'This year, SCCS is aiming higher – with a fundraising target of RM1mil and a goal of recruiting at least 400 shaves,' she added.
The organisation's annual operating cost exceeds RM2mil, with over 70% of funds directly supporting medical and financial aid, accommodation, emotional care and other essential services.
In 2024 alone, SCCS recorded RM2.9mil in total expenses, with medical sponsorships exceeding RM500,000 – a notable rise.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that the centre is set to expand to Miri and Bintulu, extending its HIV support network. 'We take the issue of HIV and AIDS seriously. The increasing number of new cases is a concern we monitor closely. There is no room for complacency,' he said in his speech at the Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF) Kuching Gala 2025 at a hotel here last night. His speech was delivered by Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. The state government also contributed a further RM200,000 during the gala, bringing the total funds raised at the event to RM3.5 million. This amount includes donations from various corporate donors to support the sustainability and expansion of the TKTN safehouse and outreach model. Abang Johari further reaffirmed the state's support for high-impact initiatives, such as the Differentiated HIV Services for Key Populations (DHSKP), a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Health and its partners. 'By reaching out to key populations with tailored care and outreach, the programme reflects the realities of our state — where geography, diversity, and vulnerability require localised and responsive solutions,' he added. He commended MAF Sarawak for its collaborative approach with the government and private sector partners, including Sunway Group and Yayasan Petronas, in expanding DHSKP services. Abang Johari also highlighted youth as a key focus in the state's HIV response, stressing the need to equip them with knowledge, tools, and safe spaces to make informed decisions, particularly in reducing the risk of sexual transmission and safeguarding their wellbeing. He went on to call for greater collective responsibility in addressing the stigma surrounding HIV. 'For many, it is not the virus itself, but the isolation, shame, and discrimination that cause the deepest pain. This is a burden no one should bear — and it is one we all have a duty to lift,' he said. Abang Johari expressed appreciation to MAF Borneo patron Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Puan Sri Jamilah Anu for continuing the legacy of the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem (affectionately known as Tok Nan), who helped to establish the first TKTN facility here nine years ago. Among present were Ministry of Health deputy-director general (Public Health) Dr Ismuni Bohari, MAF trustee Assoc Prof Dr Raja Iskandar Shah Raja Azwa as well as MAF and Malaysian AIDS Council executive director Jasmin Jalil. Over 12,000 animal abuse complaints reported to DVS since 2021

BACHOK: The Veterinary Services Department (DVS) has received a total of 12,417 complaints involving animal abuse, neglect and welfare issues since 2021. DVS director-general Dr Akma Ngah Hamid said that of the total, 249 cases were recorded in 2021, 1,249 in 2022, 1,580 in 2023 and 4,133 in 2024, while 2,533 cases have been reported so far this year as of July 10. "To date, 1,407 licences have been issued for activities involving live animals, including 542 licences for the sale of live animals in captivity and 865 for their accommodation," she said. Dr Akma said that failure to comply with animal welfare requirements, whether as owners or licensees, could result in a fine of not less than RM15,000 and not more than RM75,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both. She said this to reporters after attending the National Animal Welfare Day 2025 celebration and the Horse Identification Card Registration programme here today. Dr Akma said animal welfare covered not only ruminants but also pets, including dogs, cats, rabbits and horses. "In addition to providing adequate food and water, animal welfare is also assessed based on five main pillars, namely proper nutrition, a comfortable environment, good health, natural behaviour, and emotional well-being," she said. Commenting on this year's National Animal Welfare Day theme, "Pemilik Prihatin, Haiwan Terjaga", Dr Akma said it aimed to raise awareness on the importance of pet owners being responsible in protecting the welfare of their animals. "I believe that if owners are dedicated and committed, their pets will be treated like part of the family," she said. Meanwhile, Kelantan DVS director Dr Yahasmida Yaacob said the programme focused on efforts to ensure that all horses in the state were legally registered and issued with Horse Identification Cards. According to her, microchips served as a unique identification mark for each horse, while the identification card contained the legal owner's details and the animal's health records, including vaccinations and treatments, to ensure effective husbandry. She said the programme also aimed to instil a sense of responsibility among owners to mark their animals with proper identification for their animals through identification cards and microchips. At today's programme, nearly 100 horses were equipped with microchips and issued identification cards. Other activities held during the programme included the Smart Horse competition, briefings on animal welfare and horse identification cards, horse riding, colouring competitions, as well as exhibition and sales booths.

Call for dialysis nurse certification to boost Malaysia's healthcare workforce

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry has been urged to introduce a specialised dialysis nurse certification to strengthen Malaysia's nursing workforce and improve the quality of patient care nationwide. Chairman of the Maaedicare Charitable Foundation, Tunku Datuk Yaacob Khyra, said such certification could address the growing shortage of dialysis nurses and help manage rising healthcare costs due to staff turnover. Speaking at An Enchanted Evening – A Gala for Giving 2025, Maaedicare's annual fundraiser held here last night, Yaacob proposed a streamlined two-month training programme designed to equip nurses with specialised skills in dialysis treatment. "With this certification, I believe dialysis nurses could earn a higher salary than general nurses, in recognition of their specialised role," he said. He said the certification would allow Renal Nurses, who undergo six months of advanced training, to focus on more complex clinical tasks, such as operating theatre procedures, thereby ensuring their expertise is used more effectively. Yaacob also highlighted that many fully trained Renal Nurses, after completing costly, employer-funded training, often leave Malaysia for better opportunities abroad, particularly in the Middle East. "A tiered training structure, distinguishing the roles of Dialysis Nurses and Renal Nurses, would help reduce the financial impact of such staff losses on our healthcare system," he said. The event was graced by the Patron of the Maaedicare Charitable Foundation, Yang di-Pertuan Besar Negri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, and Tunku Ampuan Besar Negri Sembilan Tuanku Aishah Rohani Tengku Besar Mahmud. Also present were Her Highness Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Almarhum Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'Adzam Shah, Tunku Temenggong Kedah; Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad; and Maaedicare Charitable Foundation Chief Executive Officer Anne Rajasaikaran. The fundraiser successfully raised RM600,000 in combined cash and in-kind donations. The proceeds will go towards enhancing kidney care at 11 dialysis centres, upgrading diagnostic capabilities at the Cardiac Diagnostic Centre, and expanding free health screenings through its two Klinik Amal Percuma clinics nationwide. Since its founding in 1994, the Maaedicare Charitable Foundation has subsidised dialysis treatment for over 32,000 patients and continues to expand access to cardiac services and free medical screenings for vulnerable communities. – Bernama
