Prince William wishes Wales' women footballers luck ahead of their Euros debut - and he does it in Welsh as well!

Daily Mail9 hours ago
Prince William wished the women's Wales football team good luck ahead of their Euros debut at 5pm today.
Posting on X in Welsh, he said: 'Pob lwc i Gymru wrth iddyn nhw chwarae am y tro cyntaf ym Mhencampwriaeth Ewros y Merched. Mae hi'n foment falch a hanesyddol i bêl-droed Cymru. W'.
For those unable to read Welsh, in English the post translated to: 'Best of luck to Wales as they make their Women's Euros debut. A proud and historical moment for Welsh football. W'.
Thousands of fans have flown out to the tournament in Switzerland to rally around the team as they face their first opponents - 2017 champions the Netherlands.
Despite being the lowest ranked team in the Women's Euro 2025, fans appear hopeful they could win.
Dressed Welsh kits and waving flags, beaming fans have arrived in swarms to support their team.
In Wales, women's football dates back to the late 19th century and gained popularity during World War One.
But in 1922, the Football Association of Wales (FAW) imposed a ban on women's football, prohibiting matches from being played at any FAW-affiliated grounds.
The ban remained in place until 1970 and their first game at association level wasn't until 1973.
Their first qualifying match against Switzerland for the Euros in 1995 was played at Cwmbran Stadium, and attracted a crowd of just 345.
Prince William's message comes as no surprise as he revealed in September 2022 that he was trying to learn the Welsh language, after being named Prince of Wales following the death of his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II.
In 2024, he revealed he was using popular language app Duolingo to help him.
Prince William and Kate Middleton inherited the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales following the late Queen's death in September 2022 - having previously been the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
His father, who is now King Charles, held the title of the Prince of Wales for more than 64 years.
And William isn't the only leader to support the team.
Wales have the second highest ticket sales of all the nations at the Euro's 2025.
As a result, Switzerland appears to be filled with fans in red, yellow and green bucket hats.
And Wales boss, Rhian Wilkinson wants to show the fans they're backing the right team.

Back on track after break-up, Seb Coe and his glamorous Los Angeles fiancee - as 68-year-old Olympian is set to wed for the third time

Sebastian Coe is back on track to wed for the third time. The 68-year-old Olympian has 'quietly reunited' with glamorous Los Angeles PR woman Sarah Robarts and the pair are 'happier than ever' and planning their future. Lord Coe started dating the 54-year-old in 2020 and the pair announced their engagement two years later. But they split just nine months on, leaving friends stunned. The MoS can reveal that the couple reunited earlier this year and appeared in public together for the first time last month in Lausanne, Switzerland at the inauguration of Kirsty Coventry as the new president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Lord Coe unsuccessfully ran against the two-time swimming gold medallist from Zimbabwe to head the IOC, but was on 'fine form' at the event, according to onlookers. One witness said: 'It was the first time Seb and Sarah have been photographed together since they quietly reunited. 'They are happier than ever and madly in love. Seb is on fine form and looked thrilled to have Sarah back on his arm. 'Sarah is a triathlete and a hugely successful businesswoman so they have a lot in common. They make a great couple and everyone is thrilled they are planning their wedding.' Lord Coe accompanied Ms Robarts to Buckingham Palace on June 26 (pictured above) when she received her MBE for 'services to British business, to philanthropy and to UK/US relations'. Ms Robarts has raised millions for charities including the King's Trust and Rhino Ark, and is the former president of the British American Business Council in LA. Lord Coe has four children from his first marriage to Nicky McIrvine but the pair split in 2002. He wed journalist Carole Annett in 2011 but separated from her in early 2020 and began his romance with Ms Robarts later that year. The pair have yet to decide on a wedding date.

Wilkinson: Timing of goals hurt Wales against Netherlands

Rhian Wilkinson admitted the early second-half goal 'definitely hurt' Wales during their 3-0 defeat to the Netherlands in their European Women's Championship opener. Manchester City's Vivianne Miedema opened the scoring for the Dutch in first-half stoppage time before Victoria Pelova doubled their tally after the break in the 48th minute to put the tie beyond doubt. Barcelona forward Esmee Brugts added the extras as Wales opened with a heavy loss. 'It was a tough game. We know we're in a hard group but, equally, it's about Wales showing up and showing who we are as a team and a country,' Wilkinson told the BBC. 'Getting into the half at 0-0 would have gone a long way. In the second half, that quick goal definitely hurt us.' Wales will need to get points on the board against France in St Gallen on Wednesday if they are to progress from Group D. They then face the Lionesses in their final group game as they bid for silverware in Switzerland. 'We're going to have to grow and learn from this,' she added. 'We're looking forward to the next game now.' Wales failed to register a shot on target in the match, and midfielder Jess Fishlock pointed towards Miedema's 100th international goal and Pelova's effort early in the second half as the turning points. 'To concede just before half-time and then so quickly after half-time, probably lapses of concentration and at this level, you switch off and you get punished,' Fishlock told the BBC. 'We are probably going to be a little bit disappointed in ourselves that we didn't get in and regroup the way we normally do. But this is the level and we have to get used to it real fast. 'What I do know is that we are going to regroup and get better as this tournament goes on. I think we have learned we can't switch off and we have to be better on the ball. 'At this level you have to keep the ball and move the ball and create space. We'll figure it out.'

Bobby Jenks, former White Sox closer and World Series champion, dies aged 44

Bobby Jenks, 2-time All-Star closer and World Series champion with the Chicago White Sox, has died at the age of 44. The White Sox said Jenks died Friday in Sintra, Portugal, where he was being treated for adenocarcinoma, a form of stomach cancer. 'We have lost an iconic member of the White Sox family today,' White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said in a statement. 'None of us will ever forget that ninth inning of Game 4 in Houston, all that Bobby did for the 2005 World Series champions and for the entire Sox organization during his time in Chicago. He and his family knew cancer would be his toughest battle, and he will be missed as a husband, father, friend and teammate. 'He will forever hold a special place in all our hearts.' He was living in Portugal to be closer to his wife's family, according to the New York Post. Jenks helped the White Sox win the 2005 World Series, saving four games in six appearances during the postseason. He was an All-Star in each of the next two seasons while saving 41 games in 2006 and 40 in 2007. He retired 41 consecutive batters in 2007, matching a record for a reliever. "He was embarrassing guys, good hitters, right away," former White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko said in a video tribute. Jenks saved 173 games for the White Sox from 2005-10 before finishing his career with 19 appearances in 2011 for the Boston Red Sox. For his career, he was 16-20 with a 3.53 ERA and 351 strikeouts in 348 appearances, all in relief. "As a teammate," former White Sox outfielder Aaron Rowand said, "he was the best." Jenks is survived by his wife, Eleni Tzitzivacos, their two children, Zeno and Kate, and his four children from a prior marriage, Cuma, Nolan, Rylan and Jackson.
