Two people rescued after going overboard on Disney cruise ship

CNN2 days ago
Two guests, said to be a father and his young daughter, have been rescued by crew after going into the water while onboard the Disney Dream cruise ship as it returned from a voyage around the Bahamas.
Disney confirmed that the rescue happened on June 29, saying that both were returned to the ship within minutes of entering the water.
Social media posts from customers on board reported that the pair were a father and his young daughter. The father is said to have jumped in to rescue his daughter after she fell from the ship. It's unclear how she ended up overboard.
'The crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water,' Disney said in a statement to CNN.
'We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes. We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols.'
The ship was returning to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after a four-night cruise in the Bahamas, Newsweek reported, citing Disney officials.
Passengers took to social media to share their videos of the boat rescue.
'We heard an M.O.B (man overboard) call over the ship's speaker. A little girl had fallen into the water, and her father jumped in after to save her,' said Floridian Janice Martin-Asuque on Facebook. 'Thank God they're both safe.'
Passenger overboard incidents are relatively rare on cruise ships. Tales of rescue and survival can be even more extraordinary.
In 2022, 28-year-old James Michael Grimes fell overboard from a Carnival cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico. He swam for what he believed to be more than 15 hours before being rescued by the Coast Guard.
In 2015, a former Miami Dolphins player, Rob Konrad, said he swam for more than nine miles to reach shore after falling off his boat near the South Florida coast.

Hearts Break as Foster Dog Realizes She Can Finally Be Comfy in New Home

After months of smelling her bed and then walking away, thinking she wasn't allowed to be comfy, a foster dog named Meadow finally took her first nap on it, and internet users can't cope with the heartwarming footage. A viral TikTok video shared in June by the pup's foster carer, Shelsey Gonzales, under the username @thefatdog, shows the dog making herself comfortable on her bed for the very first time. She is wiggling her tail and rolling over on her back like it is the best day of her life. "POV [point of view]: My foster just realized she's allowed to be comfy," reads layover text in the clip. Gonzales, 29 years old from South Texas, told Newsweek that Meadow is estimated to be a 2-year-old Labrador retriever mix, who, after spending months thinking that she wasn't allowed to sleep on the bed, recently just realized that she actually is. From left: Screenshots of the viral clip show Meadow slowly getting comfortable laying on her bed. From left: Screenshots of the viral clip show Meadow slowly getting comfortable laying on her bed. @thefatdog "For months, she would sniff the dog beds but then just walk away and sleep right in front of them. She finally got the courage to step in a dog bed, but then she immediately jumped right out like she did something wrong," Gonzales said. "After realizing she wasn't in trouble, she attempted again. She started to relax her body and take in the new area. She later got back in the bed with so much more confidence, a pure 'look at me' moment," Gonzales added. Meadow arrived at Saving South Texas last year, after being found homeless and pregnant with 10 puppies. While one sadly passed, the shelter managed to re-home all the nine remaining ones. Meadow, however, didn't find a home, and so she is staying with Gonzales, as a foster. "Meadow has likely spent her entire life on the streets in fight or flight mode. This is her first experience in a real home. She needed time to decompress and learn that she can trust us," Gonzales said. "We've been fostering Meadow since April 13, 2025. She came to us extremely scared and shutdown. She was so scared she didn't use the bathroom for three days. I sat in silence with her and hand-fed her meals so I could start to gain some trust with her. We rewarded her for everything so she knew it was OK. "For example, when she would come out of her crate, we'd give her a reward. Walking on the leash, we'd reward every few steps; going potty outside, walking up to us. There are so many small details that are actually huge milestones for a scared dog." Positive reinforcement, which is the training method above described by Gonzales, is the best way to train your pup, because it is incredibly effective and doesn't ruin the bond with you. Dogs don't understand punishment, and so telling them off for their bad behaviors won't get you anywhere. Instead, they do understand praise and rewards; praising their good behaviors and ignoring the bad ones will make learning a lot easier on them. Meadow is available for adoption now in Texas, and, while she is on heartworm treatment, any interested adopter can finish her course of medication at home, and it will be fully funded by the shelter. Meadow will be available for out-of-state adoptions after her treatment is over in August. She is house- and crate-trained; she likes her space to relax but doesn't mind other animals around; and she is cat- and dog-friendly, although she needs her time to trust anyone, including humans. "[Meadow is] a big foodie who always finishes her meals. She loves cuddling on the couch. She's overall a very mellow and laid back dog. Over these two months, we have never seen her run," Gonzales said. "Even her time alone in the big backyard, she just sunbathes. We cannot wait to meet the person or family that falls madly in love with her." The video quickly went viral on social media and it has so far received over 4.9 million views and more than 752,000 likes on the platform. One user, User67889879, commented: "Sobbing at the tail wags and her rolling onto her back." Galatia Kyriakou posted: "I want to have a calm civilized conversation with the previous owners." Sophie added: "Don't know how people can foster, I'd end up with 50 dogs because I wouldn't want to let them go." Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share? 'Ah one, and ah two'…let's get started on this TV flashback. Naturally, this tribute is about the legendary Lawrence Welk, the "Champagne Music" maestro, known for his family-friendly show and his signature "A one, and ah two" introduction to musical numbers. Beyond long-running The Lawrence Welk Show, which debuted on ABC on this day in 1955, Welk was a bandleader, an accordion player, and a shrewd businessman synonymous with squeaky-clean (and older-skewing) entertainment. (Photo by) Let's go back to July 2, 1955 for the premiere of The Lawrence Welk Show. I Love Lucy finished the season as the top-rated television series in primetime (with a staggering average 49.3 household rating, according to Nielsen). The Jackie Gleason Show at No. 2 led the then overpopulated category of variety. And classic crime drama Dragnet ranked third overall. More Michael) At a time when the summer was a breeding ground for leftover programming, ABC aggressively brought Lawrence Welk into primetime. Initially billed as the Dodge Dancing Party in 1955 and 1956, The Lawrence Welk Show became a staple for ABC for 16 years, particularly as a Saturday night option. The variety series featured the band, singers, and dancers, all showcasing a range of musical styles from big band to polka. Many episodes included a theme, like songs of the 40s or music from famous groups, with the cast performing related numbers. Segments highlighted individual performers. And then there was the Lennon sisters, who were dubbed "America's Sweethearts of Song." They were…all together now…"Wunnerful, wunnerful!" More Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty Images) While still a popular option on ABC, The Lawrence Welk Show was a victim of the 'rural purge' in primetime in 1971, which resulted in the demise of series like The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, Hee Haw and Welk's variety series in favor of more modern type storytelling a la The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Norman Lear's All in the Family. (Photo by CBS) UNSPECIFIED - CIRCA 1970: Photo of All In The Family Photo by MichaelLife After Cancellation In response to the show's demise, Welk started his own production company and continued producing it for first-run syndication. Fun factoid: The success of Lawrence Welk and Hee Haw in syndication, and the network decisions that led to their premature cancellations, were the inspiration for a novelty song called 'The Lawrence Welk-Hee Haw Counter-Revolution Polka.' After 11 additional seasons (and 30 seasons in total), Lawrence Welk retired and production of the weekly television program ended in 1982. With bubbles floating around accompanied by a sound effect of a bottle of champagne opening at the beginning of most episodes, The Lawrence Show was not the 'coolest' or 'trendiest' television series. But its wholesome, family-friendly entertainment left an indelible impact. And today we remember this 'wunnerful, wunnerful' variety series.
