WVU men's hoops adds incoming freshman Jayden Forsythe

Dominion Post07-05-2025
MORGANTOWN — The West Virginia Mountaineers basketball program has added another commitment from West Chester (Pa.) Westtown School 2025 guard Jayden Forsythe.
Forsythe, 6-foot-5, 190-pounds, picked the Mountaineers over a long list of scholarship offers including Xavier, Illinois, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, Penn State, Northwestern, Wake Forest and a number of others.
The Rivals.com three-star prospect was initially committed to Xavier from September until late March when he requested his release from the Musketeers.
A smart, skilled guard Forsythe is one of the better three-point shooters in the 2025 class.
Forsythe was the only player on the EYBL circuit to shoot over 40% from 3-point range on 75-plus 3-point attempts. He averaged 9.5 points per game for Team Final at the Peach Jam this past summer, while shooting 39% from three-point range.
Forsythe took an official visit to Morgantown May 3-4 after previously visiting Tulane April 29-30. That was enough to close the door on his recruitment by committing to the Mountaineers.
'I have everything I need to be successful at the next level,' he said. 'It's also in one of the best conferences in America in the Big 12.I'm excited to get to work.'
Forsythe has his complete complement of eligibility remaining in his career.
The 2025 guard is the latest addition to the roster joining fellow 2025 forward prospect DJ Thomas as well as eight other transfer additions since Ross Hodge took over the program.
West Virginia is now up to 10 players in total on the 2025-26 roster with the coaching staff still looking to address other needs in the coming weeks.

Colorado football lands 2026 offensive lineman over Syracuse, UCF

Colorado football secured a commitment from class of 2026 three-star offensive lineman Ben Gula on Friday evening. Gula chose the Buffaloes over Syracuse and UCF. He held offers from 21 programs, including Colorado. The 6-foot-5, 285-pound lineman visited Boulder on June 6 and UCF on June 13. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida, product is 247Sports Composite No. 96 interior offensive lineman, and the No. 131 player from Florida. Gula becomes Deion Sanders and the Buffs' tenth commitment to their 2026 recruiting class. He is the third commitment in the class from Florida, which is always a plus in Sanders' eyes. What position Gula plays along the offensive line remains to be seen. His size (285 pounds) might project him more as a tackle than a guard, but it will be something to watch when Gula gets to campus. The commitment brings Colorado's 2026 class to No. 80 nationally, but it still ranks last in the Big 12. Follow Charlie Strella on X, Threads and Instagram. Matt Rhule updates status of WR Demitrius Bell

It's been 464 days since receiver suffered a knee injury in the spring game of April 2024. The setback knocked Bell out for the entire 2024 campaign, plus this year's spring practices. Last Monday, head coach Matt Rhule announced Bell would be out for fall camp as well. Before Saturday's Big Red Preview open practice, Rhule touched on Bell's recovery. He said the 6-foot, 195-pounder recently traveled to Chicago to see a knee specialist. If all goes to plan, Bell could return to the practice field during the first half of the season. 'He'll be back here soon. When I say soon, in the first part of the year,' Rhule said. 'It's just the after effects, pain tolerance, different things like that. So I don't know enough to get too far into specifics other than, every time we've gotten closer, he's almost back, it's just a little bit of a setback. … Really positive outlook, though. So, expect him to be back, hopefully at some point in the first part of the season.' After redshirting his first season at Nebraska in 2023, Bell, a former 4-star recruit in the 2023 class out Nashville (Tenn.) McGavock, was the talk of spring ball 2024. Unfortunately, Bell was one of two players who suffered a serious injury during that spring game. The other was cornerback , who appeared to be the starter opposite Tommi Hill until he injured his knee. That setback knocked Blye out until midseason. 'Last spring game was really unfortunate, right? We lost D-Bell, who we thought was probably going to be one of our best receivers to a semi-contact injury,' Rhule said Feb. 1. 'And then Blye Hill, we thought was gonna be our starting corner. Those guys never quite came around.' If Bell's rehab does go according to plan, he'll compete for snaps in what appears to be a high-potential receiver room led by position coach Daikiel Shorts Jr. Kentucky transfer Dane Key, Cal transfer Nyziah Hunter and returning slot Jacory Barney Jr. are expected to be the core wideouts in a standard 11 personnel grouping. Veteran Janiran Bonner will also have a role as a pass catcher and blocker in offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen's offense. But the young talent behind those four are emerging. Big-body redshirt freshmen Quinn Clark and Keelan Smith stood out during Saturday's Big Red Preview, as did true freshman Cortez Mills Jr., who repped with the first-team due to Key sitting out. Uber-athletes Carter Nelson and Heinrich Haarberg, while listed as tight ends, could still have pass-catching roles out of the slot as well.

ESPN: Pelicans receive failing offseason grade after draft-night trade

Headlined by an aggressive move to draft Derik Queen with the 13th pick, the New Orleans Pelicans were given a low grade by ESPN when assessing their offseason roster moves. The Pelicans traded the 23rd pick (Asa Newell) and an unprotected 2026 first-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks for the draft rights to Queen. The deal has been widely criticized, with one executive telling The Athletic that it was the worst trade outside of Luka Dončić in the last decade. The organization, led by new president Joe Dumars, also drafted Jeremiah Fears with the seventh pick, acquired Jordan Poole and Saddiq Bey from the Washington Wizards and signed free agent Kevon Looney. The moves received a failing grade from Kevin Pelton. Grade: F The Hawks-Pelicans draft-night swap was seemingly the most lopsided transaction of the summer. It could pay off for New Orleans, but it was far too risky to be sensible -- particularly in the context of the Pelicans' other moves. New Orleans is betting on Jordan Poole being a playoff-caliber starting point guard and has overloaded its depth chart at center by drafting Derik Queen and signing veteran Kevon Looney. Queen was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year at Maryland, averaging 16.5 points, nine rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks in 36 games on 52.6% shooting from the field. He helped lead the Terrapins to their first Sweet 16 appearance since 2016. Dumars and the front office highly valued Queen in the draft and believe he can step in and contribute at a high level. He defended their decision to take him, stating: "I've been doing this for way too long to give credence to naysayers." Queen debuted with the Pelicans in the NBA Summer League, averaging 14 points, 11 rebounds, 2.3 assists and one block. Though he is expected to be sidelined for three months with a wrist injury, the team is eager to get him on the court and seemingly has no regrets over its recent moves.
