Review, The Bear, Disney+ returns to original recipe for new series
AFTER the blood, sweat, tears, burns and shouting - lots of shouting - the review is in. What review you ask? How quickly they forget.
Season three of The Bear, the Disney+ tale of a Chicago restaurant desperate for a Michelin star, was taken up with waiting for a make-or-break review. Sounds dull, was dull.
The new 10-part series, which dropped today, opens with said review. As expected, it's a mixed bag, at once praising the restaurant's ambition while slating it for chaos and inconsistency. Sounds about right, both for restaurant and series.
The Bear's creator, Christopher Storer, had a choice here: to double down on the misery and introspection, or strike out for pastures new. That he opens with a clip from Groundhog Day is a detectable-from-space clue to where he is heading. As is culinary wonderboy Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) breaking into a smile, and something approaching a chuckle. The Bear gets happy - I kid you not.
That's the good news. The bad is the restaurant is bleeding money and will be forced to close in months if the team can't land that Michelin star. Finally, a cause that everyone can rally around.
Front of house manager Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), still the show's best character and its secret sauce, can forget his ex is getting married and his daughter has a new daddy. Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) can seize the day and sign the partnership agreement. Carm can start helping people again instead of screaming at them.
There is so much motivation going on, I half expected the theme tune from Rocky to strike up and the staff to run out en masse to climb the nearest steps. Wrong city, but everybody loves a comeback tale, right? Whether the hardcore fans of The Bear will feel the same I'm not sure. Can a show built on the unhappiness of its characters change so much and have the same appeal?
Storer gives viewers no time to ponder. All that good stuff of old comes to the table - breakneck editing, pumping music, a sense of the team against the world, everybody yelling 'Doors' as the restaurant opens, and of course calling each other chef. There's a new character, the maitre d from Olivia Colman's old joint, who looks promising. There's even an attempt at some comedy, though so far that's still a work in progress.
While it is fun getting back to The Bear basics, the show will stand or fall on its main characters, led by Carmy. In the last series, however, he was the weakest of the bunch, and you do wonder how much he has left to say. Others can take up the slack, starting with Jamie Lee Curtis as Carm's mommie dearest, Richie and Carm's sister Sugar (Abby Elliott). They will have to.
Whatever its more passionate defenders thought, The Bear did not change television in the way, say, The Sopranos did. It was always soapier than it seemed, and it's no bad thing to go back there.

Republican Marian Price issues legal proceedings against Disney+ over Say Nothing series
Veteran republican Marian Price is taking legal action against the streaming company Disney+ for defamation over the Troubles series Say Nothing. Broadcast last year, the drama depicted Price, as being involved in the murder of Jean McConville – a claim her solicitors previously said was 'not based on a single iota of evidence'. The widowed mother-of-10 was abducted from her Belfast home, murdered and secretly buried by the IRA in 1972. Her body was eventually found at Shelling Hill beach in Co Louth in 2003. Following the airing of Say Nothing, Price was approached for comment by the Sunday Life but refused to answer any questions. Now solicitors acting on her behalf have said that formal legal proceedings have been issued against Walt Disney and Minim Productions Limited following what they branded 'egregious and defamatory allegations levelled at our client in the 'Say Nothing' series'. Both entities have failed to take steps to rectify their actions, causing 'continuing and untold damage and harm to our client', a statement from Phoenix Law added. Solicitor Victoria Haddock said: 'Our client should not be placed in the position of having to take formal legal action to vindicate her reputation. 'Despite multiple opportunities to address the defamatory content of the 'Say Nothing' series, Disney and Minim Productions have failed to take any step to do so. 'There is no justification for making abhorrent accusations under the guise of entertainment and we will be seeking to hold all responsible parties to account.' Disney+ has been contacted for comment. Marian Price was convicted along with her sister Dolours Price for their part in the IRA car bomb attack on London's Old Bailey courts in 1973 in which one man died and more than 200 people were injured. In 2014 Marian Price was given a suspended sentence for aiding dissident republicans. She admitted providing a mobile phone used to admit responsibility for the Real IRA murders of two soldiers, Sapper Patrick Azimkar (21) and Sapper Mark Quinsey (23). The charge was connected to the attack on Massereene Army barracks in 2009.

Emily, who gave birth to her first child just over a year ago, was in discussions about the show with Disney+ and the production company Boldprint Studios — but it was not to be. Naked tennis A TV insider said: 'It's not entirely clear why she didn't pursue the show, particularly as it would have proved very lucrative to be working with the streaming giant. 'It would almost certainly have proved very popular with viewers too. But it's fair to say she would have struggled time-wise to fit it in alongside all her other projects and, of course, her most important job of being a mother.' Emily had baby Barney last June with her long-term partner Alistair Garner, and within months, she was juggling being a first-time parent with her TV work. She's just made a second series of Rivals, a Disney+ adaptation of Jilly Cooper's epic bonkbuster novel which debuted last year. The eight-parter saw her appear alongside David Tennant and Aidan Turner and the sequel is expected to drop later this year or early in 2026. Emily's role in the show sees her play saucy Sarah Stratton, the second wife and former mistress of MP Paul Stratton. One of her scenes helped Rivals land a nomination for a Bafta TV Moments Of The Year when she was seen playing naked tennis with central character Rupert Campbell-Black, played by Alex Hassell. In the six-parter, out on July 25, Keeley is a retired assassin living in Greece, who goes on the run with her estranged son, played by Freddie Highmore. Which, ironically, has echoes of another Keeley drama, The Durrells, where she played a housewife enjoying a twee existence in Corfu. But, trust me, this is a very different show. 7 In the six-parter, out on July 25, Keeley is a retired assassin living in Greece Up to the Task THE 20th series of Taskmaster will feature Reece Shearsmith, Maisie Adam, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Phil Ellis and Ania Magliano, Channel 4 has announced. Greg Davies and Alex Horne will once again host the show, which has yet to be given an air date. Netflix best in show NETFLIX has delivered some incredible documentaries this year, and it shows no sign of slowing down. Next up is one about the Costa Concordia disaster of 2012, which saw a cruise ship sink off the coast of Italy. Almost 4,300 people were on board and 32 people died in the tragedy. The captain, Francesco Schettino, was later found guilty of manslaughter and also of abandoning his ship. The show is certainly in safe hands with its producers Raw, who have a history of delivering top-class shows, with The Tinder Swindler among their previous successes. Netflix's documentary highlights so far this year include Attack on London: Hunting The 7/7 Bombers as well as Grenfell: Uncovered.
