Rams show Nuggets no mercy
What does hope look like when it has been shredded in a blender?
Well, like the long faces that headed into home dressing rooms at the Edgar Centre last night.
The Otago Nuggets trailed the Canterbury Rams 55-29 at the break.
The game was over.
Or was it?
Of course it was over.
It was a clash between the best team in the National Basketball League and easily the worst and that was very, very obvious.
The 113-59 final score was a painfully honest reflection of the gulf in class between the traditional rivals.
The 54-point loss was the heaviest defeat in their history. Their previous largest losing margin was a 47-point shellacking by the Southland Sharks in 2013.
Australian guard Sean Macdonald top-scored with 27 points and CJ Penha added 19 from the bench.
Jonathan Janssen was the best of the Nuggets players. He posted a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds.
There were early troubling signs.
Rams guard Taylor Britt got free passage along the baseline for a basket. Someone dropped off their defensive assignment and he was not the last.
Macdonald drilled a couple of early three-pointers and the Rams took an 8-0 lead.
Janssen finally got the Nuggets on the board with a putback and Jaylen Sebree landed a triple.
Other than that it was painful to watch for the home fans.
The Nuggets made a series of bumbling efforts close to the hoop and some complete misreads on defence.
Where is the exit?
Cannot have been the only one thinking that.
The Rams claimed twice as many rebounds and posted almost three times as many points in a lopsided 27-10 opening period.
Macdonald stuck another three for the two-time defending champions early in the second quarter.
Walter Brown grabbed an offensive board and popped it in. That was too easy.
So was the cut Macdonald made to the cup for another bucket moments later.
Maybe the fire alarm will go off now?
Cannot have been the only one thinking that.
The Nuggets rallied towards the end of the half but still trailed by 26 points.
The third quarter was sloppy. The Rams lacked some of the urgency they displayed earlier and the Nuggets were able to disrupt their pattern more successfully.
Max Darling drilled late back-to-back threes to stretch the margin to 38 points with 10 minutes remaining, though.
Make it stop.
Cannot be the only one thinking that.
The game carried on, of course.
The Rams spent a chunk of the fourth quarter taunting Sebree and he promptly fouled out of the game.
Call that a win for the visitors.
Darling brought up 100 for the Rams with a lay-up.
The Rams beat the Nuggets 42-36 in the Rapid League game.

British and Irish Lions v Western Force live updates
Live updates of the opening British and Irish Lions tour match against the Force in Perth. Lions side to face the Force Ireland hooker Dan Sheehan said Thursday he will be his 'chill' self after being named captain for the British and Irish Lions' opening Australian tour game against Western Force in Perth. The 26-year-old Leinster star was a surprise choice to lead the side on his Lions debut, having skippered his country just once. 'It's obviously a massive privilege and honour,' said Sheehan, who will pack down between countryman Tadhg Furlong and Scotland's Pierre Schoeman in the front row on Saturday. 'I just need to be myself, do what I usually do. I'm quite a chill person. I feel like I've got an understanding on who I am and what sort of excites me. 'With the added role of being captain I don't think it changes that much. I'll just bring the boys with me. I'll just let it happen.' Head coach Andy Farrell retained just two players from the side that started the 28-24 loss to Argentina in Dublin last week -- flanker Tadhg Beirne and centre Sione Tuipulotu. Among those rested is tour captain Maro Itoje, who led the side against the Pumas. Farrell has opted to make full use of his squad in the first of nine tour matches, including Tests against the Wallabies in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. He was without the bulk of his Leinster players against Argentina and they feature heavily against Simon Cron's Force, with nine in the matchday 23. Five starters will be making their Lions debut, as will four on the bench. 'We have had a good week of training and all of the travel and time-zone changes have been managed really well, so we are good to go,' said Farrell. On Sheehan, Farrell said being captain 'will make him a better player because that's the type of character he is, and he's a calming-type influence who understands what pressured situations really look like'. The Lions back row consists of Beirne, former World Rugby player-of-the-year Josh van der Flier and young star Henry Pollock. Scotland ace Finn Russell starts at flyhalf, partnering Welshman Tomos Williams. English veteran Elliot Daly takes on the fullback duties with Mack Hansen and James Lowe on the wings, and Garry Ringrose and Tuipulotu in the centre. 'We know the quality and experience the Force have and the opportunity to play against the Lions always brings out special performances from the Super Rugby sides, so we expect them to be at their best,' added Farrell. On their 2013 Tour, the Lions ran out 69-17 winners against the Force. British and Irish Lions (15-1): Elliot Daly; Mack Hansen, Garry Ringrose, Sione Tuipulotu, James Lowe; Finn Russell, Tomos Williams; Henry Pollock, Josh van der Flier, Tadhg Beirne; Joe McCarthy, Scott Cummings; Tadhg Furlong, Dan Sheehan, Pierre Schoeman

Young Otago players named to tour Aust with NZ rep team
Rising Otago softballers (from left) Ropata Campbell, Crew Wilson and Taki Adlam are part of the New Zealand U15 Developing Sox boys' side heading to Queensland next month. Central Otago player Tane O'Neill is also in the squad. PHOTO: PETER MCINTOSH Otago softball has hit a home run. The region is helping foster the next generation of talent with four players destined for Australia next week. Dunedin players Taki Adlam, Crew Wilson and Ropata Campbell and Central Otago player Tane O'Neill have been named in the New Zealand U15 Developing Sox boys' team to tour Queensland. It is significant recognition for the sport in the South, which often struggles to be recognised at a national level. Adlam, 14, a left-handed pitcher and first baseman from King's High School, will be familiar with many of the Queensland players he comes up against, having lived in the Australian state — and played softball over there — until returning to New Zealand last year. Wilson and Campbell, who are both 15 and attend Otago Boys' High School, have come through the Dunedin softball pathways, guided by coaches Stacey Wardell, Sarah Teasdale and Kirsty Currie. The trio play for the Southern Magpies U15 team, who were Otago champions last summer, and also play in the Magpies Tane team in division 2. They will all add some different flavour to the national team across the field. Wilson, who was named in a ''best of the rest'' tournament team after the New Zealand U17 championships in January, is primarily a first baseman, and Campbell will be used as an outfielder for the national squad. O'Neill is no stranger to the softball pitch. The multi-talented athlete, who attends Dunstan High School and plays his club softball for Demons in the Southland competition, was part of the national squad last year that competed at the inaugural invitational Tasman Cup tournament against New South Wales teams. The Developing Sox team, coached by Stacey Taylor and assistant Matty Hicks, fly out on Thursday and have a busy six days ahead of them. They play two games against the Toowoomba and Ipswich U16 teams. The team will then travel to Redland, where they will play five games against the Queensland U16 team across a couple of days.
