UUM forms committees to investigate fatal bus accident on campus
The fatal incident, which occurred near a bus stop along Jalan Persiaran Perdana within the university grounds, took place on Saturday and led to the death of 22-year-old Manarina Hasya Muhamad Karim, a fourth-semester Bachelor of Marketing student.

In a statement, UUM vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan stated that an accident investigation committee has been formed to look into the crash that took place within the campus grounds, New Straits Times reported.
He added that a second committee, the Campus Shuttle Bus Service Integrity Evaluation Committee, would evaluate the efficiency, compliance, and overall management of UUM's transport system.
'We have taken steps by establishing two special committees to investigate the incident and review the safety aspects of the campus shuttle service.
'UUM remains committed to prioritising the safety and welfare of its community, including students,' he stated.
He mentioned that UUM has provided support to Manarina's family, including assistance with funeral arrangements, insurance claims, and welfare aid.
'UUM shares in the profound grief of the student's family. The loss of a student, who was on the path to success, is not only a loss to her loved ones, but also to the university and the nation.'
He also confirmed that police are conducting a separate investigation and that counselling services have been made available to the victim's family and affected students.
'UUM remains committed to prioritising the safety and welfare of its community, including students,' he said.
According to earlier reports, the accident happened when a shuttle bus had stopped to pick up passengers and was rear-ended by another bus. The resulting impact caused the front bus to surge forward, crashing into a roadside barrier and pinning Manarina, who had been waiting in line to board.
She succumbed to her injuries while being treated at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital.
Both bus drivers, aged 32 and 37, escaped unhurt.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Kuantan cops put the brakes on 65 mat rempit, issue 194 summonses
KUANTAN: A teenager performing a 'wheelie' on his motorcycle was among 65 individuals detained during the "Op Khas Samseng Jalanan" operation conducted at various locations in the state capital yesterday. The 18-year-old suspect was performing the dangerous stunt near the Pantai Sepat Muslim burial ground when he was stopped by a team of policemen. Acting Kuantan police chief Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud said a total of 194 summonses were issued, and 24 motorcycles were seized for various offences during the operation, held between 4pm and 11pm. "All the suspects were aged between 15 and 25. Besides participating in illegal racing, they were found to be riding without valid licences, using illegally modified motorcycles, displaying incorrect registration plates, and equipping their bikes with modified exhaust pipes. "The special operation was conducted following complaints from residents that illegal street racing activities were organised near their housing settlements," he said in a statement today. Adli said the 18-year-old suspect who performed the wheelie was detained for executing the stunt along a busy road, an act that endangered not only himself but also other road users. He said the teenager is being investigated for reckless driving under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum jail sentence of five years and a fine of up to RM15,000. Meanwhile, Adli added that police will continue to carry out regular special operations to address the "mat rempit" issue and curb illegal street racing in the area. "We have identified several hotspots frequently used for illegal racing activities, including the stretch between Kampung Sungai Soi and Tanjung Lumpur here," he said.

He said the operation by the Miri Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division sought to stop illegal racing and ensure road users comply with traffic laws and regulations. 'During this operation, a total of 25 vehicles were inspected, of which 18 motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for being modified from their original structure and for further inspection. 'Throughout the operation that was held at Jalan Bandaraya Miri, Jalan Marina Utama, Jalan Miri-Bypass, Jalan Tanjung Lobang, and Jalan Canada Hill, 30 individuals were checked, and a total of 61 PDRM (K) 257 summonses were issued for various traffic offences,' he said in a statement.
