Czech police nab fake dentist with dozens of patients
Prague, Czech Republic -- A fake dentist and two assistants who treated dozens of patients after learning the trade on the internet have been charged in the Czech Republic, police said Wednesday.
The three family members opened a fully equipped dentist's without a licence or the necessary expertise in the central Czech town of Havlickuv Brod in 2023, police said.
A 22-year-old man posing as a dentist provided check-ups but also extracted teeth, gave root canal treatments and applied anesthesia, drawing on information obtained online.
A 50-year-old woman worked as a nurse, while a 44-year-old man providing the premises produced prosthetic devices for patients.
'The woman, who worked in the health sector, provided anesthetics but also other dental material to which she had access, such as fillings, cleaning powder, glue, impression material and much more,' police said in a statement.
Asked by AFP if some of the patients complained, local police spokeswoman Michaela Lebrova declined to comment.
The illegal clinic treated dozens of patients and raked in a total of four million Czech koruna (US$185,500), police said.
Police detained the trio earlier this month and charged them with doing illegal business, money laundering, attempted battery, drug dealing and theft.
All three had a clean criminal record. They have been provisionally released after pleading guilty, and face up to eight years in prison, police said.
Facing a shortage of dentists, the Czech parliament last year passed a bill facilitating the employment of dentists from countries outside the European Union, of which the Czech Republic is a member.

Strathroy-Caradoc police investigate homicide after fatal stabbing
A quiet residential neighbourhood in Strathroy was turned upside down Friday night as police in the community investigate what they're calling a homicide. Strathroy-Caradoc police were called to Ashby Crescent just after 5 p.m. following reports of an altercation between two men. Police say they arrived to find one man with stab wounds. The 27 year old later died of his injuries. A 25-year-old man has been arrested and taken into custody. Witnesses tell CTV News the two men had been working in the area, though this has not been confirmed by police. Strathroy-Caradoc Det. Sgt. Jason Cartwright said the service is getting help from OPP Major Crimes and Sarnia Police Forensics units. 'We aren't sure exactly what the relationship is between those two individuals. We're still investigating. The OPP Major Crimes Unit as well as the Sarnia Police Forensic Investigation Section is attending to give us a hand. This just occurred in the last couple hours, so charges, we will be looking at charges pending in the future,' said Det. Sgt. Cartright. In the meantime, a portion of Ashby Crescent has been cordoned off and closed to vehicular traffic as police investigate. Yellow crime scene tape can be seen wrapped around the front yards of two homes next to one another on the small street.

'Veterinarians did an amazing job patching him up and he is expected to fully recover.' 'It was such a high-risk situation for Freddy, his partner and the other officers,' the region's top cop added. The woman was driving her Porsche Macan in the area of Guelph Ln. and Derry Rd. when she became 'concerned' and noticed she was 'being followed' by an allegedly stolen grey Chevrolet pickup truck, police said.
