'Ring of fire' thunderstorms to ride rim massive heat dome this week
A swath of thunderstorms, sometimes thousands of miles long, often goes along with huge heat domes across the United States during the summer. The weather pattern this week will be no exception, AccuWeather meteorologists say.
Because the air in much of the heat dome is warm through most layers of the atmosphere, clouds have difficulty forming, let alone thunderstorms. However, on the edges of the heat, especially along the northern and western flanks thereof, the air is cooler well above the ground, which makes it easier for clouds to tower and produce thunderstorms.
The pattern is referred to in the weather community as a "ring of fire," as thunderstorms tend to form along the edges of the heat dome. Within this ring, there can be spotty, individual thunderstorms, large clusters of thunderstorms or a solid line of storms that can repeat or meander back and forth as hot and cool air change hands.
During the afternoon and evening, when thunderstorms tend to be most active, towering clouds, downpours, thunder and lightning will extend from north-central Mexico to southeastern Canada and New England, an arc about 2,200 miles long.
If a location is within the thunder zone one day, it could remain in the same zone all week or possibly catch a break one day, only to be stormy the next consecutive days. Where the storms repeat, there will be a heightened risk of flash flooding. Any thunderstorm in the highlighted zones can pulse to severe intensity with high winds, frequent lightning strikes, hail and perhaps a brief tornado.

A swath of thunderstorms, some locally severe, will extend from northeastern New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle to northern Michigan into Monday night.
Much of the Northeast will catch one of those breaks from thunderstorm activity into Monday night but not so for Tuesday as the thunder regime resumes.
More storms will target hard-hit areas of central and eastern upstate New York, as well as northern New England, western New York, northwestern Pennsylvania, northern Ohio, northern Indiana, southern Michigan and vast populated areas of southeastern Ontario and southern Quebec.
Tuesday will be another active day in terms of severe weather for the Plains states as well. Most of the severe thunderstorms will focus from the eastern halves of Colorado and Wyoming to northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.
More storms will erupt in both the Plains and Northeast states at midweek. Some severe thunderstorm activity will extend from the High Plains of Colorado, Wyoming and Montana to southern Michigan, northern Indiana and northern Ohio.
The severe weather threat will extend into the Northeast on the northern fringe of the heat dome as well on Wednesday. Picking up from northern Ohio and southern Michigan, the threat of locally severe thunderstorms will extend eastward through central and northern Pennsylvania and the southern tier of New York to northern New Jersey and southern New England.
Locally severe thunderstorms will continue in parts of the Midwest on Thursday. Pockets of severe weather are likely to continue over the Plains, Midwest and the Northeast until the heat dome breaks down.
As the heat dome collapses, there will be the potential for a large zone of thunderstorms that progresses from east to west or from north to south late in the week and over the weekend. Some of that thunderstorm activity is likely to be severe as is often the case, as a heat wave breaks down.
There will be thunderstorm activity on the southern edge of the heat dome as well.
The trade winds will be enhanced by the east-to-west breeze created by the high pressure area, associated with the heat dome, especially over the Florida Peninsula. While this pattern is often present during the summer, thunderstorms can be a bit stronger given that they are on the edge of the heat dome.
Most of the thunderstorms will tend to erupt just inland of the Florida Atlantic beaches and push westward across the Peninsula as the day progresses. By the time they reach the Gulf coast, they can be locally severe.

Massive 'heat dome' is bringing 'extremely dangerous' temperatures to the eastern half of the US

A major heat wave is set to scorch the central and eastern U.S., with millions of Americans facing potentially record-breaking extreme heat. Temperatures and humidity will rise as much of the country finds itself under a "heat dome," The Associated Press reported. A heat dome occurs when an area of high pressure in the atmosphere traps warm air beneath, effectively like placing a lid on top of a pot. The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned that "extremely dangerous" levels of heat are likely over the weekend and into next week, as sunny days, light winds and a lack of overnight cooling worsen high temperatures. "Heat is likely to reach dangerous levels over much of the Central and Eastern U.S.," an NWS representative wrote in a weather update posted on Facebook. "Particular concern exists for the Ohio, Valley, Eastern Great Lakes, Interior South, and much of the East Coast, where the heat will be more persistent." Meteorologists predict that the heat wave will hit the central U.S. between Friday (June 20) and Sunday (June 22), before making its way to the East Coast next week. Temperatures are expected to reach nearly 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) across the central and eastern U.S. (exceeding 100 F in some areas). Affected cities such as Denver, Washington, D.C., and New York City will experience several consecutive days of heat, weather website AccuWeather reported in a forecast. Moist ground will absorb some of the sun's energy, preventing temperatures from exceeding 100 F over much of the affected area. However, the heat will also evaporate this moisture, adding to what are already expected to be humid conditions, according to AccuWeather. The NWS warned the anticipated levels of heat can be dangerous to anyone who doesn't have effective cooling systems or adequate hydration, and is especially risky to people taking part in lengthy outdoor activities. A thunderstorm "ring of fire" has erupted along the edge of the massive "heat dome" currently smothering much of the eastern half of the United States. And if that wasn't enough wild weather, the first named tropical storm of the season has also emerged — and already fizzled out — in the Atlantic. The heat dome is being caused by an area of high pressure in the atmosphere that has trapped warm air beneath it, like a giant lid on a pot. The dome has been contributing to sweltering temperatures in the Central and Eastern U.S. since the end of last week, even raising temperatures in New York City to 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 Celsius), a height not seen since 2013, The Associated Press reported. Clouds have difficulty forming inside a heat dome, where most of the air is warm, but it's a different story on the dome's edges, where the air is cooler, according to AccuWeather. A chain of thunderstorms, or ring of fire, often rides the edge of a massive heat dome, and that's proven to be the case this time. "AccuWeather expert meteorologists are monitoring an arc of severe thunderstorms stretching 2,200 miles [3,500 kilometers] from northern Mexico to New England and southeastern Canada this week along the western and northern edges of the heat dome," representatives for AccuWeather wrote in a statement released Tuesday (June 24). A "ring of fire" is what meteorologists call thunderstorms and heavy rain riding the rim of a high-pressure ridge, but given that this weather is marked by extensive rain that can produce flooding, the name is a little confusing. There's also a chain of volcanoes around the Pacific Ocean with the same name. However, the National Weather Service (NWS) has warned that "extremely dangerous" heat will nonetheless continue throughout that time, affecting areas from the Midwest to the East Coast. The heat won't completely subside by the weekend, either, but it will ease a bit in large parts of the eastern U.S., according to the NWS. Heat waves have become more common and intense with climate change. The frequency of atmospheric patterns linked to extreme summer weather, including heat domes and flooding, has nearly tripled since the 1950s, according to a study published June 16 in the journal PNAS. While many U.S. states have been experiencing sweltering heat, the first named tropical storm of the season emerged in the Atlantic. Tropical Storm Andrea, also called Tropical Cyclone Andrea, formed in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday (June 24), but posed "no threat to land," according to the National Hurricane Center. However, the storm quickly weakened, The Associated Press reported. Before dissipating, Andrea never grew strong enough to become a hurricane, which have maximum sustained wind speeds of at least 74 mph (119 km/h) Researchers have found that the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season could be more severe than normal. The season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, has a 60% chance of "above-normal" activity, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Climate models predict that hurricanes will become more intense as the planet warms up.

Forecasters predict the worst of a record-setting heat wave may soon be over — but millions still need to take precautions to stay safe from dangerous heat. The most significant heat conditions are expected to continue across the Mid-Atlantic through Thursday, June 26 and the eastern Ohio Valley into Friday, June 27, according to the National Weather Service. AccuWeather meteorologists said extreme heat may begin to subside Wednesday, June 25, in New England, the Upper Midwest and the Plains, with temperatures dropping into the 70s and 80s. For those still experiencing the oppressive heat, here's some tips for how to find your own bit of relief. The balance between staying cool and keeping energy costs low can be tricky amid a heat wave, when sitting in front of a blasting air conditioner is oh-so-appealing. The Environmental Protection Agency's energy-efficiency program Energy Star recommends setting the thermostat to 78 degrees when you wake up during summer months to maximize efficiency. Michael Webber, a professor of engineering who studies energy at University of Texas at Austin, said pre-cooling your home by running the air conditioning more in the morning and evening, and less in the afternoon when temperatures are at their peak can go a long way, too. 'Picking the right temperature and cooling your house at the best times, these are things you can do for free essentially,' to stay comfortable and save on energy costs, Webber said. Portable electric fans can also help make a room feel cooler, but the National Weather Service recommends pointing them away from yourself when the room temperature is higher than 90 degrees. The dry blowing air can lead to dehydration, the agency says. If you don't have air conditioning, or if it isn't working, libraries, shopping malls, grocery stores and public cooling centers can also offer relief from scorching temperatures. You might want to think twice before ordering that large iced coffee – or margarita pitcher. Hydration is the name of the game during a heat wave and Betsy Koickel, chief medical officer at GoHealth Urgent Care, said 'excessive alcohol or caffeine intake can increase the risk of dehydration.' The American Red Cross said the average person should drink about three-fourths a gallon of water a day. Koickel recommended drinking water before you feel thirsty and replenishing with electrolyte replacements, such as Gatorade, especially if you plan to exercise or sit outside for extended periods. Consistent water intake may be particularly important for people taking medications that can cause dehydration, including some blood pressure drugs, antidepressants and antibiotics. She also said easy-to-digest foods, like fruits and salads, can help with hydration. If you need to wander outside, you can protect your skin by frequently reapplying sunscreen, wearing a loose, brimmed hat and choosing light-colored clothing. The EPA recommends avoiding direct exposure to the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun's rays are the strongest and taking frequent breaks in the shade to cool off. In extreme cases, intense heat can lead to sickness as your body struggles to regulate its temperature. Early symptoms of heat injury, including thirst, lightheadedness or a headache, may develop if you don't properly hydrate, Koickel said. Dark-colored or foul-smelling urine may be another sign of severe dehydration. 'If you don't take steps to rehydrate at that point, it can lead to heat exhaustion. You could faint. You could start to experience some severe muscle cramps, excessive sweating, and then if that's not taken care of, it can eventually lead to heat stroke.' Heat stroke can occur when someone's body temperature reaches 100.4 degrees. If heat illness reaches that point, she recommended calling 911 or finding immediate medical attention.
