India's power grid gets a summer scare

Mint20-06-2025

New Delhi: India faced a power grid scare last week as electricity withdrawn from the transmission network exceeded the available capacity, raising fears about the grid's stability.
The available transfer capability (ATC) in the western-to-northern corridor was about 22 gigawatts (GW) against the actual flow of 24.14 GW on 15 June, showed a notice sent to utilities by Grid India Corp. ATC is the volume of power that can be safely supplied between two points.
The national power grid controller wrote to the generators and electricity distribution companies (discoms) in the northern region to either lower the withdrawal or ramp up generation.

After temperatures eased in May, there was a heat wave in June, which would have increased the demand, mostly in northern India, leading to congestion, said Vikram V, vice-president and co-group head, corporate ratings, ICRA Ltd.
A grid collapse is the worst-case scenario. Nearly 620 million people across 19 states and three Union territories went without electricity for hours together when the northern grid collapsed on 31 July 2012. In a wider blackout, the northern, eastern and north-eastern grids broke down on 1 August 2012.
India now has a unified national grid.
Vikram said instances of overdrawing were quite common till 2014-25, but have declined since then. Usually, in case of congestion, the grid operator may direct the utilities to reduce the offtake to avert any kind of impact on the grid. Issues arise when discoms draw larger than scheduled power from the inter-state grid to meet the high demand, he said.
Addressing entities in the northern region 'over-drawing or under-injecting" power to the grid, the controller's notice said: 'The following regional entities, which are downstream of the congested corridor, are advised to reduce their drawal/increase their generation to decongest the system."

Grid India told the utilities in western and southern India to increase demand or decrease generation to decongest the corridor.
'This is a warning notice before levy of congestion charges and issued in accordance with the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (Measures to relieve congestion in real time operation) Regulations 2009," the notice said.
The peak power demand of the country hit 241 GW, the highest this year, on 11 June. That day, the peak demand in the national capital reached 8,231 MW, nearing the record of 8,656 MW recorded last year.
The peak demand on 15 June was 226 GW, also on the higher end.
Tardy grid expansion
Experts suggest that grid expansion is key for reducing incidences of congestion. More so when the installed renewable energy capacity has been rising.
Although the government has an ambitious road map to expand the grid, progress has been slow amid land acquisition and right-of-way issues. Data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) showed that in FY25, only 8,830 circuit kilometres (ckm) of transmission lines were added, 37.8% lower than 14,203 ckm in the previous fiscal and way short of the target of 15,253 ckm.
Mint earlier reported that clouds over vast swathes of north India in May had caused abrupt dips in solar power production, raising worries about the stability of the power grid that serves millions of Indians.

In February, the national grid operator asked all electricity companies to be alert and supply power to preserve the grid's stability.
An analysis by the International Energy Agency (IEA) in March said that countries seeking to prevent or address grid congestion should adopt a proactive approach to grid expansion by means of anticipatory planning and regulatory reforms that incentivize investments in line with countries' energy policy priorities.
Congestion can also be mitigated by implementing grid-enhancing technologies, increasing transparency on available capacity, and creating regulatory frameworks and clear price signals to unlock flexibility from consumers, producers and energy-storage assets connected to the grid.

India to earn more money as tensions rise in the world due to...., can become next US because... It is sad but true that in trying times like these when the world is witnessing two wars, Russia-Ukraine and Iran Israel, India has a scope to be rich. It is said that US that during the Second World War earned a lot of money by selling weapons to the Axis countries and the Allies. Now India is also getting a similar opportunity. In order to keep an eye on each other, countries need satellites and this need of theirs can be fulfilled by India's private space companies which have started getting orders from many countries of the world including Australia, Norway, Hungary, Poland and countries of West Asia. How can Indian companies benefit? According to a report in Mint, many countries of the world are working together with Indian companies. These include Alpha Design, which has investment from Adani Defense and Aerospace. Most of these include countries that do not have their own satellite program. But due to rapidly changing geopolitical equations and global tensions, they need to keep an eye on enemy activities from space and as India has good relations with many countries, Indian companies are to be benefitted. What is the worth of Indian contracts? Experts say that the US giants Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Northorp Grumman, which make reconnaissance satellites, are focusing on big contracts. Indian companies are getting contracts worth 5 to 25 million dollars. Private sector participation in India's space sector is increasing rapidly. Since the establishment of IN-SPACe in the year 2020, the role of private companies in space has increased significantly. Who are getting orders? Bengaluru's Anant Technologies and Digantara have got contracts from Australia. These companies want to put their satellites in space and share the data obtained from them with other countries. Chennai-based company GalaxEye Space has announced the launch of its first surveillance recent years, many startup companies have emerged in the space sector. These include Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, Pixel Bellatrix Aerospace and Dhruvra Space. Skyroot Aerospace launched the country's first private rocket Vikram-S. This company is developing launch vehicles of the Vikram series. The company's target is to launch satellites at a very low cost.

MP secures 252 MW hydropower from Arunachal to meet rising energy demand

Bhopal: In a strategic move to bolster its renewable energy portfolio, the Madhya Pradesh government on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) for the procurement of 252 megawatts of electricity. The agreement was formalised in Bhopal between the MP Power Management Company and NHPC, with the power allocation sanctioned by the Union Ministry of Power. The power purchase agreement (PPA) was signed by Rakesh Thukral, Chief General Manager of MP Power Management Company, and Omkar Yadav, General Manager of NHPC, in the presence of Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav. Under the agreement, Madhya Pradesh will receive 252 MW from NHPC's multipurpose hydropower project located in the Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh. The project, being developed on the Dibang river, is expected to be commissioned by 2031–32. Officials noted that the electricity from this project will help meet peak demand for over three hours during the Rabi season and between nine to nineteen hours during other periods. Chief Minister Yadav described the agreement as a forward-looking step to ensure energy security for the state's growing agricultural and industrial sectors. He emphasised that Madhya Pradesh, being an agriculture-based state, is witnessing a steady rise in electricity consumption, particularly in rural and irrigation-intensive areas. The state's total power demand is projected to reach 20,000 MW by the end of the current financial year, power department officials said. The Lower Dibang Valley project is one of India's largest multipurpose hydropower initiatives, designed not only to generate clean energy but also to aid in flood control and water management in the northeastern region. Its integration into Madhya Pradesh's grid reflects a broader national strategy to promote inter-state energy cooperation and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Officials from the energy department said that this long-term power purchase will enhance grid stability and support the state's transition toward sustainable energy. The agreement also aligns with Madhya Pradesh's broader energy roadmap, which includes investments in solar and wind power under various central schemes. With this MoU, Madhya Pradesh positions itself among the leading states in leveraging hydropower to meet future energy needs while contributing to national climate goals.
