Perth Amboy, Kushner Companies to finalize agreement for 602 waterfront apartments
The City Council has introduced an ordinance approving the tax break and a financial agreement with Perth A Urban Renewal LLC to redevelop the properties along Front, Commerce, Rector, Broad, High and Fayette streets.
A public hearing and final adoption of the ordinance is scheduled for the City Council's Feb. 12 meeting.
The ordinance comes just five months after the Council tabled a similar ordinance in part because of residents' concerns about whether the former Perth Amboy Police Headquarters and First Aid Squad building, along High and Fayette streets, could be preserved and reused, rather than demolished.
In tabling the ordinance, city officials planned to renegotiate the terms, but a city notice gives no indication whether the historic structure will be saved.
A city spokesperson has not yet responded to a request for comment about those sites.
Perth A Urban Renewal LLC is an affiliate of Landings, which in 2000 reached a redevelopment agreement with the Perth Amboy Redevelopment Agency and Charles Kushner of Kushner Companies, as the redeveloper for the Landings at Harborside.
Kushner has been nominated by President Donald Trump to serve as the United States ambassador to France.

Kushner Companies has two condominium buildings in Perth Amboy − Bayview, at 368 Rector St., and the Admiral at 358 Rector St. They are part of the planned $600 million Landings at Harborside complex.
In 2017 a confidential settlement was reached between Kushner Companies and 32 condo owners in the Landings at Harborside community after the residents filed a consumer fraud lawsuit alleging construction issues such as water infiltration and insufficient parking. Kushner Companies then suspended all construction of the Landings, but maintained ownership of the property.
Perth A Urban Renewal LLC is now looking to finance, design and construct 602 residential apartments in five, five-story buildings with 909 parking spaces.
The project is scheduled to be built in three phases, according to a public notice.

The plan also authorizes the city to grant a tax exemption and a Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT), in accordance with the provision of the Long Term Tax Exemption Law.
Upon completion and stabilization of the project, the municipal share of the annual service charge is projected to be about $1.2 million, and the total municipal share of annual service charges is projected to be about $64 million over the term of the tax exemption.
The project is expected to produce about 600 temporary construction jobs with wages estimated at about $44 million.
The project will also require more than $12.5 million in infrastructure improvements, including the construction of a waterfront bulkhead and esplanade, streetscaping, and utility infrastructure improvements as well as about $2 million in environmental contamination/remediation costs.

Kennedy Center's Melania rename and more: Letters to the Editor — July 27, 2025
Melania rename Renaming the Kennedy Center's opera house after First Lady Melania Trump would be a travesty ('Kennedy Center 'honor,' ' July 23). President Trump never attended any of the annual Kennedy Center honors while he was president in 2017-2020. Over the years, he showed no interest and was bored with the Kennedy Center. Unfortunately, a congressman tucked Melania's name into an amendment to a funding bill. Hopefully, Melania will correct the oversight. Advertisement Pete Sena, Naples Fla. Anti-car bias Our local progressive leaders' pro-bicycle and anti-car policies directly lead to the heightened parking space violence we now see ('No safe space in NY,' July 22). Self-serving progressive politicians who have their hands deep in the cookie-jar of the anti-auto industry have, in their 'wisdom,' replaced countless legitimate parking spots with the generally unused CitiBike stands that could have easily been placed in safer public spaces, such as parks and wide sidewalks. Advertisement Our city planners are making drivers park essentially and dangerously in the middle of the road, so that under-used, if not useless, bike lanes can be placed next to the curb. Are there any car enthusiasts on our City Council, or do they all have taxpayer-funded chauffeurs? Because few must be taking public transit unless cameras are following. Meanwhile, regular New Yorkers are forced to claim squatters rights over our ever-shrinking and costly parking spaces. Martin Garfinkle, Staten Island Sick of sickos There is absolutely no reason to believe that true evil has not taken over this world ('Kid-sex abuse horror house,' July 24). We read each day of more hideous, despicable acts of violence on innocent children. What low-lives would abuse their own children this way? A father murders his own daughter, a son decapitates his own mother, a husband kills his wife, a mother leaves an infant in the blazing heat to watch the Smurf movie. That block of cement Bryan Kohberger sat emotionless in front of families whose lives he has destroyed. Each day, the paper is filled with stories of victims of violence from shootings, stabbings, blunt force trauma. First: Put criminals away so that cannot re-offend. Then open more mental hospitals and drug treatment facilities (that don't offer more drugs). That would help heal this wretched society. Maybe following the Ten Commandments would also help. No Republican candidate yet for secondary Sunbury City Council election
SUNBURY — A Republican candidate for a secondary Sunbury City Council race in November has yet to be announced, according to the Northumberland County Election's Office. Each party has until Sept. 15 to name a candidate for the two-year seat, according to Northumberland County Director of Elections Lindsay Phillips. Northumberland County Democratic Committee Chairperson, John J. Merchlinsky III, announced the Democratic committee chose Victoria Rosancrans as their candidate. The seat became open when former Councilwoman Lisa Martina resigned to become city treasurer. Merchlinsky said Rosancrans is a longtime community leader and advocate who would bring three decades of volunteer service and proven leadership to the position. The secondary election came to be after Martina ran for and won the Republican nomination for city treasurer in May. She is unopposed for the November General Election. She was appointed to fill the vacancy left when former Treasurer Kevin Troup retired to pursue a seat on city council. Martina stepped down from from city council after she was appointed treasurer. Troup, current Councilman Nate Savidge and Andres Manresa all advanced out of the primary and will be competing for two four-year seats on council. The secondary election was announced by the Northumberland County Election's Office last month. Northumberland County Republican Chairperson Deb Betz could not be reached for comment. Sunbury City Council members John Barnhart, Jim Eister, Savidge and Mayor Josh Brosious are waiting for a decision from Northumberland County president Judge Paige Rosini on who will fill the vacant seat until January. Solicitor Joel Wiest filed a petition to the court after council could not agree on an appointment for the seat. The two candidates that were voted on at a council meeting nearly two weeks ago were Rosancrans and city resident Andrew Ramos. Both received two votes, and council decided to petition the court to fill the vacancy. Rosini does not have to choose between the two, and can appoint anyone she wants to fill the seat.
