Destructive bug infestation threatens historic 1,000-year-old book collection

Fox Newsa day ago
Thousands of historic books are in jeopardy over a massive bug infestation that could annihilate centuries-long of historical records.
The Pannonhalma Archabbey in Hungary is a Benedictine monastery that is working to save books from drugstore beetles, according to The Associated Press (AP).
About 100,000 handbound books are being removed by restoration workers to start a disinfection process that would kill any bugs that have nested in the pages.
The beetles were found in a section of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses 400,000 volumes – which makes up a quarter of the books in the library.
Zsófia Edit Hajdu, the chief restorer on the project, told AP they've never seen such an infestation before.
"This is an advanced insect infestation, which has been detected in several parts of the library, so the entire collection is classified as infected and must be treated all at the same time," said Hajdu.
Drugstore beetles are also called cigarette beetles.
They commonly infest tobacco products, according to Oklahoma State University extension (OSU).
Adult beetles are yellowish to reddish brown with oval-shaped shapes stretching about 1/10 inch long — and can infest leather.
"They have been known to damage the leaves and bindings of books when feeding on the paste," says OSU's website.
The Pannonhalma Archabbey was founded four years before the establishment of the Kingdom of Hungary in 996, according to AP.
It is home to the oldest and most important collection of books in the country, including a complete Bible from the 13th century.
Ilona Ásványi, director of the Pannonhalma Archabbey library, told AP that whenever she enters the building she is "humbled."
"When I see a book chewed up by a beetle or infected in any other way, I feel that no matter how many copies are published and how replaceable the book is, a piece of culture has been lost," said Ásványi.

ZURICH (AP) — Women's soccer is continuing to grow and this time it is Switzerland which is highlighting that trend. Only seven goals would have to be scored to better the all-time mark of 95, also set in 2022. 4 The number of red cards that were shown, beating the record of three brandished in the 2017 group stage. Germany's Carlotta Wamser, Norway's Marit Lund, Iceland's Hildur Antonsdóttir and Portugal's Ana Borges were the players dismissed. 38 years, 176 days Jess Fishlock became the oldest goalscorer at the Women's Euros when she netted Wales' first-ever goal at the tournament in its 4-1 loss to France. 22 The number of group stage matches that were sold out. 461,582 Almost half a million people attended the group stage matches, breaking the mark of 357,993 set in England at Euro 2022. Among other records to fall were the highest attendance at a group stage match not involving the host nation (34,165 at Germany vs. Denmark) and the most fans at a Switzerland women's national team match (34,063 against Norway in Basel). 1 Aleksander Ceferin, the president of European soccer's governing body UEFA, has attended just one match — Switzerland's opening game against Norway. 14,000 The number of supporters taking part in the lively fan walk — that was mainly a sea of red — to the Stadion Wankdorf ahead of Switzerland vs. Iceland. In total, around 60,000 people took part in the colorful fan walks before some of the matches in Switzerland. 4.5 million The peak audience on British broadcaster ITV for England's 6-1 win over Wales. That match and France's against the Netherlands was directly competing with the Club World Cup final between an English and French team — Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain. Euro 2025 won by far in the United Kingdom, with around 1.2 million viewers tuning into the Club World Cup final on Channel 5. However, 4.8 million viewers in France watched PSG's loss compared to the 2.3 million people who watched France beat the Netherlands. ___

UNESCO Just Added New Destinations to Its World Heritage Sites—See the Full List

There are more global wonders to explore. From Denmark to Mozambique, UNESCO recently inscribed several new global heritage sites and extended the status for two more current sites. The group detailed the news in a series of Facebook posts. The latest additions to the popular tourist list including unique sites that may be unfamiliar to even the most frequent of travelers, like Møns Klint in Denmark, which features white chalk cliffs spilling into the Baltic Sea dating back 70 million years. Travelers can explore the site's natural beauty from both land and sea, enjoying the clear water or combing the beach for ancient fossils. 'Hike along the cliffs, spot peregrine falcons, or simply take in the spectacular views," VisitDenmark's tourism website wrote about the newly-recognized World Heritage site. "It's the kind of place that Danes move to and never leave.' Another new update to the World Heritage list was the Peruaçu River Canyon in Minas Gerais, Brazil, a stunning canyon with natural flora as well as impressive rock formations. The canyon is also popular among hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, and was recognized as one of the best trails in the region by AllTrails. UNESCO also designated the Minoan Palatial Centres in Crete as a World Heritage site. The famed ruins date as far back as 1900 BC, according to the group. In the Caribbean, Jamaica's Port Royal town—a historical district dating back to the 17th century—was also added to the list. The port was home to many famous pirates back in the day, and faced a series of extreme weather and other natural disasters. "Much of the old city, described in the 17th century as the 'wickedest city in the west', lies underwater beside the town," Jamaica's tourism website shared. Sierra Leone received its first World Heritage site recognition thanks to the forests of the Gola-Tiwai Complex, which are home to "more than 1,000 plant species (113 endemic), 55 mammals (19 globally threatened), and key species like the African Forest Elephant and Pygmy Hippopotamus," according to UNESCO. The final additions included the coastal region of Guinea-Bissau—also in West Africa—and Mount Kumgang in North Korea. UNESCO's goal is to promote "quality education and lifelong learning for all to build a better future." The group regularly updates and maintains its World Heritage list. Beyond the new additions, popular locations on the list include the Taj Mahal, Yosemite National Park, and the Pyramid Fields in Egypt. In total, there are 1,248 designated World Heritage sites.
