Midrand's K101 Road construction to finish this year, vows MMC

The Citizen4 days ago
The Gauteng MMC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela has promised motorists that the K101 Road will be completed by September this year.
She said this when tabling the department's 2025/26 budget vote at the Gauteng provincial legislature on July 16.
The construction project was launched by Diale-Tlabela in October 2022.
During the launch, she said communities around Midrand were going to benefit from the multimillion-rand road construction project. 'Upon completion, Road K101 will alleviate traffic on the N1 in Midrand.'

However, since it was launched, motorists have had to deal with traffic congestion, while construction is taking place.
Diale-Tlabela also spoke about the K73 Allandale Road upgrade. She said this road upgrade aims to support the Waterfall economic zone, and alleviate traffic congestion from the Waterfall and Kyalami areas, to and from the N1.
A total of R150m will be set aside for routine road maintenance across the province.

Pothole debris lingers on 10th Road in Kew as new pothole appears

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) completed repairs of a series of potholes along 10th Road in Kew on July 11, but residents say the job was left incomplete with heaps of repair debris still lining the road more than two weeks later. Now, to make matters worse, a new pothole has appeared in the exact same spot, less than a month since repairs were done, raising questions about the durability of the original repair. Local resident Thandi Nkosi said they have been waiting for the agency to return and clear the leftover gravel, tar chunks, and broken asphalt. The delay has caused, not only inconvenience, but also potential safety risks for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles navigating the street. 'We appreciate the initial repairs, but the debris is becoming dangerous. It looks like the job was only half-done. The road is messy, and the new pothole shows that the fix didn't last long. If you swerve to avoid it, you're in the oncoming lane. Also read: Johannesburg executive mayor declares war on potholes 'If a repaired road develops a new pothole in less than three weeks, something's been done wrong. Does JRA even inspect these repairs afterward? Who's held accountable when problems reappear this quickly?' Sandton Chronicle reached out to JRA for a comment, and updates will be provided once they become available. 'As the project progresses, golfers will notice some reshaped bunkers, others being closed, and overall improvements that balance form with function. The redesign is intentional and strategic, ensuring the course remains both challenging and enjoyable.' Harris said the new bunker designs will ensure consistent playing conditions while complementing the natural flow and visual appeal of their Gary Player-designed course. While construction is underway, Harris said the course remains open with regular golfers invited to see the transformation in real time. Residents pin hopes on Free Basic Electricity as energy costs increase

Alexandra residents are grappling with the rising electricity costs, and many are turning to City Power's Free Basic Electricity (FBE) programme for relief. Over the weekend, City Power rolled out community activations at Tsutsumani and Alex Mall, following their recent activation at Itlhokomeleng Home for the Aged and Disabled. These drew scores of Alex residents desperate for relief from the financial strain of keeping the lights on. The FBE programme provides 50kWh of free electricity monthly to qualifying low-income households, enough to cover basics like lighting, phone charging, or a small kettle. With City Power's recent announcement of a 12.41% tariff hike for 2025/26, the programme is seen as a much-needed buffer by Alex pensioners struggling to make ends meet. Also read: City Power drives free basic electricity registration in Alexandra on Mandela Day Alex pensioner, Dudu Molatja, was among those at the Itlhokomeleng activation, and like most of the Alex residents on the edge of living in abject poverty, she expressed concerns about the cost of electricity. 'Electricity is expensive, and we are pensioners. When I buy R200 worth of electricity, it still does not last long. I'm hoping FBE will make our units last longer, for at least a month.' Molatja and other residents, including Caroline Seemela, who relies on a R2 000 pension grant, said they spend nearly 25% of it on electricity to stretch it through the month. 'That leaves me with [about] R1 500, and then I have to pay R300 for funeral cover, buy food, and toiletries. It's not enough. So, registering for FBE gives me hope that it will ease the burden,' Molatja shared. Also read: City Power announces interim solution for Mahauzana's electricity woes Seemela described how the rising tariffs have forced her to buy electricity at least four times a month. 'Before the increases, R100 would last for some time, depending on how we use electricity. But now, it can hardly last us a week. This free electricity [FBE] will help a lot.' Both Molatja and Seemela see FBE as an important step to free up funds for other essentials. 'If FBE can save us even a little, it will be better, and we will be happier. That is why we are here, running to register.' As the July 31 deadline for registrations approaches, City Power encourages eligible households to register.
