4 days after tragedy, Air India renumbers Ahmedabad–Gatwick flight; AI 171 retired to ease trauma for flyers and crew
Sources confirmed that the flight service will resume from Monday, whereas bookings are currently available for flights on Tuesday.
Although Air India has not issued an official statement on the renumbering, the updated flight number is reflected on the airline's official website.
A Boeing 787-8 aircraft will operate the said flight. The service will now operate under a new flight number – AI 159 – with the return journey designated as AI 160, as learnt from sources.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the airline has retired the AI 171 designation in an effort to help passengers and crew psychologically distance the revived route from the devastating incident, as is learnt.
Aviation sources confirm that such changes are not uncommon and are generally adopted to provide emotional closure and restore traveller confidence.
'Renumbering a flight after a major accident is standard industry practice.

It is a mark of respect for the lives that were lost,' a source said.
Notably, this approach has precedent. The Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 and Lion Air flight JT610 both underwent renumbering following high-profile crashes, in line with international aviation norms aimed at addressing public sentiment.

UK, India say no room for double standards on terrorism in Modi–Starmer talks
NEW DELHI: India and the United Kingdom on Thursday sent a strong, united message against terrorism, with both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his British counterpart Keir Starmer agreeing that there can be no double standards in tackling extremism. Following a bilateral meeting at the Chequers Estate, Modi thanked Starmer for the UK's strong condemnation of the April terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives. 'We are united in our view that there can be no place for double standards in the fight against terrorism,' Modi said. 'We also agree that forces with extremist ideologies must not be allowed to misuse democratic freedoms. Those who misuse democratic freedoms to undermine democracy itself must be held to account.' The statement, also seen as a veiled reference to pro-Khalistani activities abroad, comes amid growing Indian concern over threats to Indian diplomats and missions in the UK. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri later said that India had raised the issue during the bilateral talks. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation between their security agencies, including on the extradition of economic offenders, a longstanding demand from India involving several high-profile fugitives residing in the UK. The two leaders also discussed regional and global challenges. 'We exchanged views on peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, the conflict in Ukraine, and the situation in West Asia,' Modi said. 'India supports the early restoration of peace and stresses that respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations is essential. The demand of today's era is not expansionism, but developmentalism.' Modi also expressed condolences for British nationals who died in last month's Air India crash in Ahmedabad. The meeting, which included a private one-on-one between the leaders, also laid the foundation for a long-term bilateral agenda. A 'Vision 2035' roadmap is being drafted to energize the India–UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership over the next decade, spanning trade, defence, clean energy, and technology cooperation.

India opens accounting, auditing services under trade pact with UK: GTRI
India has opened key segments of its services sector to British firms, granting access in areas, such as accounting, auditing, financial services, telecom and auxiliary air transport, think tank GTRI said on Thursday. However, all key areas of India's interest like IT, business services such as management consultancy, advisory, professional including accountancy, engineering, telecom, financial, education and health are covered in the pact. While India has made commitments on market access across 108 sub sectors in services, the UK has made commitments across 137 sub sectors, practically covering more than 99 per cent of India's exports, a commerce ministry official said. Live Events The agreement, the GTRI said, ensures no caps on the number of UK service providers, and offers commercial presence rights (Mode 3) across multiple domains. However, India retained key regulatory carve-outs, especially in legal services, taxation, and national security, and still lacks full mutual recognition frameworks in most regulated professions. "In contrast, the UK's services offer to India is more cautious and limited in scope," GTRI Founder Ajay Srivatava said, adding that while it grants commercial presence rights in sectors like computer services, consultancy, and environmental services, its commitments on professional mobility are modest. The UK has offered an annual quota of 1,800 visas for niche roles like yoga instructors and classical musicians, but it has not made binding commitments on broader visa categories, including business visitors or IT professionals. "The UK's refusal to restore post-study work visas is a disappointment for Indian students, and the FTA does not override the UK's points-based immigration system -- meaning Indian professionals must still meet regular education, salary, and job offer thresholds," Srivastava said. A key positive is the Double Contribution Agreement, which allows over 75,000 Indian workers on short UK assignments to continue paying into India's social security system without dual contributions. "However, this is a temporary fix, and a comprehensive totalisation agreement remains pending. Overall, the UK's services package shows reluctance to ease mobility for Indian professionals -- one of India's core demands," he added.
