Alex Dunne produces stunning Formula 2 drive in Barcelona to regain championship lead
The Offaly native was among seven drivers eliminated from the main race in Monaco last weekend as he was involved in a significant collision on the opening corner.
Rodin Motorsport's Dunne was given a 10-place grid penalty for the sprint race, and a further three-place grid penalty after running into the back of another car when entering the pits during Friday's free practice session.
That meant he would have to start Saturday's race in 19th place but he produced another remarkable drive to climb to second, finishing just behind MP Motorsport's Richard Verschoor.
His runners-up place in Spain now moves the 19-year-old to the top of the standings with 76 points ahead of Sunday's feature race, where he will have that aforementioned three-place grid penalty.
Dunne is just four points clear at the top of the leaderboard, just ahead of Luke Browning (Hitech TGR) on 72 points.

Jimmy Dunne has described the news that he will captain Queens Park Rangers next season as a 'really proud moment.' It marks a turnaround for the Ireland defender, who looked set to leave Loftus Road last January, and again this summer when his contract expired. I'm less emotional in my decision-making than I was when I first came. But I'm still just as eager to win.' 'I want to continue to improve and it's nice to have another head coach (Julien Stéphan) that wants to continue to help me with my development.' Dunne has already made 163 competitive appearances since his move in July 2021 from Burnley, scoring 11 goals. He has taken over as captain from 34-year-old centre-half Steve Cook, who has pledged to help the Irishman adapt to his new role. 'Thankfully, I have Steve around who handed the armband over to me and said a lot of nice things to the group about me,' said Dunne. 'He talked about how we can develop our leadership style together, because there are other experienced heads in the group. 'I'm grateful that Steve's still around so I can learn a lot from him because he's incredibly experienced, he's led by example previously, so I'm going to try to take a leaf out of his book. 'That experience goes a long way when you want to take on someone's advice - it's coming from someone who's been there and done it. It can go a lot further.' QPR will open their 2025/26 Championship campaign at home to Preston - and Dunne expects to have a big personal fan club at the game. 'All my family and friends will be there for that,' he said. 'And Preston at home, I'm sure it'll be a full house on a sunny day in London and it'll be brilliant. Bring it on. Let's go. "Ultimately, we want to finish the season higher than we have done. I've always been super ambitious at QPR. I've always thought, 'why not'? "My target's definitely to play better than I did personally, play better than I did last season, score more goals, keep more clean sheets, lead by example. But I think for the football club, to get into a better place, it's about consistency.'
