Canadian country superstar Shania Twain helps kick off Calgary Stampede
On Friday, more than 300,000 people lined the streets of downtown Calgary to watch this year's Calgary Stampede Parade, hoping to catch a smile and a wave from parade marshal Shania Twain.

In an exclusive interview with 'The Morning Show' host Jeff McArthur, country music superstar Shania Twain talks about her new 'favourite hat' and reflects on how she was chosen to be parade marshal for this year's Calgary Stampede Parade. Global News
In a one-on-one interview with Jeff McArthur, host of The Morning Show on Global Television, the country music legend reflected on how she got the invite to saddle up at the front of this year's parade.

'So last year I was hanging around with some new friends that I've made in Calgary and they're very involved with the Stampede and I said, 'Oh, I would just love to be doing that right there, riding a horse in the parade.' And I'm like, 'Oh well, you know, not everybody can be a parade marshal — yeah, I'm sure it'll never happen,'' Twain said.

'And then I get the call. So I don't know how that happened, but I'm really happy.'
'I feel very proud that I'm able to wear this gorgeous hat that was gifted to me for the parade,' Twain added. 'This is my kind of pride and joy hat now.'
Despite having performed in Calgary many times over the course of her musical career, Twain said she has never attended the Stampede.
'I love to see the people. I love the people. I love the excitement. I'm going to feed off the energy and just enjoy myself, really. Say hello to a lot of people from in the saddle — that's really the exciting part,' Twain said.

On Saturday, the five-time Grammy Award winner will make another appearance in Calgary as she takes to the stage for a concert at the Saddledome.

'It'll be crazy in a really good way — a very exciting way — it's really just all about the party and having fun,' Twain said. 'I love people to forget about life for a little while, as I do when I'm on the stage. We all kind of escape together and just sing along and have a great time.'

CALGARY – Canada's new prime minister, best known as a buttoned-down banker, donned a cowboy hat and toured the stables Friday evening at the Calgary Stampede. Over an hour-long tour winding through the rodeo grounds, Mark Carney crawled into a tank, snacked at food stations and posed for dozens of selfies, marking his first visit to the Stampede as prime minister. 'We gotta see some chuckwagons, huh,' Carney said as he strolled down the Midway with an entourage of security and cameras, sampling mini doughnuts and pretzels as he made his way to the grandstand stadium for the chuckwagon races. The Stampede visit is a long-running tradition for sitting prime ministers no matter their political stripe. But it's not guaranteed: former prime minister Justin Trudeau didn't appear at last summer's rodeo, coming as his party struggled in the polls. One year later, the Liberals' political fortunes have flipped, with Carney leading the party to a minority government in the recent federal election. The party has two Albertans sitting in the House of Commons despite predictions the party could nab more seats in the true-blue provinces. Wearing dark-blue jeans, a navy sport coat and cream-coloured cowboy hat, Carney was met with a warm reception on the grounds, shaking hands with surprised Stampede-goers and taking photos with employees behind food stands. He did not wear cowboy boots or a belt buckle, instead wearing brown sneakers and a thin belt. 'What are you doing here?' Carney jokingly said to a group of women on the Midway. 'What are you doing here?' one of them yelled back. Later, as he walked on the stage before the chuckwagon races at GMC Stadium, Carney was met with a mix of boos and applause from the crowd of approximately 17,000 people. 'They're saying woo. I heard woo,' the announcer said. Carney is scheduled to attend a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning and is hosting a party fundraiser in Calgary later in the day. Day 1 of the 2025 Calgary Stampede rodeo welcomed the stars of breakaway roping to the main stage. Article content And the brightest in the much-ballyhooed debut was a home-town cowgirl. Article content Shelby Boisjoli-Meged, of Langdon, Alta., was all smiles after winning Friday's event and forever etching her name in the rodeo's record books. Article content 'I didn't really think about (making history),' said the smiling Boisjoli-Meged. 'But that is really cool to think about. And in terms of just having an event here … yeah … it's extra special for me. Article content Article content 'This is my hometown rodeo.' Article content Article content After decades of being featured at other rodeos across the continent and years of lobbying for it to become a staple here in Calgary, the news in March of its inclusion brought on a big hurrah. Article content It also came with the thumbs up it would pay out the same as the other events — a total prize purse of $310,250 — in the main rodeo. Article content 'It's unbelievable that Calgary added breakaway this year for us, and they went ahead and just added equal money at the very first one,' said Boisjoli-Meged, the reigning world champion of breakaway roping and wife of 2024 Stampede tie-down champ Haven Meged. 'Honestly, we didn't hear anything or know anything, and then all of a sudden, it was just like a phone call and then an announcement. Article content 'So they kept it really quiet, and then they surprised us with it. So we didn't hear we didn't know anything about it, and they just dropped it on us like a bomb. So it was crazy.' Article content Article content Boisjoli-Meged was the first call made by the Stampede when it officially became a main-rodeo event because she's the local talent. Article content Article content And obviously, the 27-year-old Albertan squeezed every ounce of being that hometown favourite with her winning run — 2.3 seconds for $7,000 aboard her 'good mare' Onna — in breakaway roping's historic call to 'The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.' Article content 'The nerves are kind of the same (as any other rodeo), because we do this all the time, but I think moreso just excitement and having my family here watching me is just a different kind of pressure,' said Boisjoli-Meged, who was cheered on by a bevy of loved ones, including mom Sherry — a once-upon-a-time Stampede princess — and dad Garth. Article content 'I fed off it, for sure. You know … whenever my family's watching me, I feel like I'm 10-foot tall and bulletproof. So having them all there backing me was just unbelievable.
