Ahly's new home - Sports - Al-Ahram Weekly
Construction, in the city of 6 October in Cairo, is set to begin immediately, with completion targeted within close to four years.
The event was attended by Egyptian football officials, players and celebrities from all over the world.
Egyptian powerhouse Ahly, chosen by the African Football Federation as the African Club of the 20th Century, have taken an enormous dive toward realising their long-awaited vision with the official launch of the 'Project of the Century', a sprawling sports city in Sheikh Zayed, west of Cairo, during the FIFA Club World Cup trophy ceremony.
Backed by a group of local and international partners, the landmark stadium aims to transform Egypt's sports infrastructure and cement Ahly's status as a continental powerhouse. It will deliver a 42,000-seat stadium designed without a running track to maximise fan proximity to the pitch, aligning with global standards, specialized facilities which include a sports hospital, museum chronicling the club's 120-year legacy, a sports university, a youth academy and a hotel.
The two-phased construction will first prioritise the stadium and hotel while phase two introduces the university, hospital and auxiliary training pitches.
Egyptian financial heavyweight Beltone Leasing & Factoring has committed LE4 billion ($80 million) to the project, with developer Al Qalaa Al Hamraa for Facilities Management securing additional funding to meet the total estimated cost of LE8 billion to LE9 billion. Beltone's role as exclusive financial advisor highlights the initiative's strategic importance to Egypt's economic and sporting ambitions.
The collaboration includes 15 global and regional firms, including Hilton International, UAE-based Palm Sport, and leading engineering consultancies, ensuring world-class execution.
Ahly President Mahmoud Al-Khatib hailed the project as a 'historic milestone', emphasising its role in diversifying the club's revenue streams and elevating Egypt's global sports profile.
'From 1907, all club members, officials and fans lovers, we all dreamt of this moment.'
Al-Khatib praised Mohamed Kamel, CEO of Al Qalaa Al Hamra, for his work on the stadium. Kamel had said: 'This isn't just a stadium – it's a holistic hub for health, education, and athletic excellence.'
'In our journey,' Al-Khatib said, 'we faced some things which were solved and also when we claimed this land at Sheikh Zayed, we faced obstacles that the highest structures we could build could be only six metres tall. We presented our plan to officials who were very cooperative when they saw our seriousness and insistence. After we drew up plans we received the go ahead allowing us 30 metres in height for the stadium and an additional 12 metres for other buildings in the club,' Al-Khatib, a former Ahly football star, said.
Al-Khatib then shared with the audience his personal battle with health issues. 'In 2023, I went through health problems which were not good. I went abroad [for treatment] and then after returning, I shared my condition with my fellow board members and I told them I needed a long break.'
He recalled that board member Amri Farouk had at the time slipped into a deep coma. 'So, we all forgot about having breaks and focused on our work.
'Three months ago, I started feeling unwell and rumours broke out about my health and the results of my medical tests. I wanted to forget all the news and the pressure. However, we were close to January, the time when we needed to focus on our players and those who wanted to join the club. We had already set a date for the unveiling. So, it was important for me to continue.
'And now that all is good with football and the launch of the stadium, I discussed with my colleagues about taking a break after this event. So, with your permission, I am taking a break for a while, then have another check-up and wait for the results.'
During his address, Kamel unveiled the stadium's once closely guarded design via a video showcasing its standout features, including stands emblazoned with the club's iconic name and logo, a suspended circular screen beneath the roof, premium changing rooms, and adjacent restaurants and cafés.
The sports city is poised to boost tourism, generate employment and inspire future athletes. By integrating cutting-edge medical, educational, and training facilities, the project aims to nurture homegrown talent and position Egypt as a regional sports leader.
With groundwork now underway, Ahly's legion of supporters eagerly anticipate a new era for the club and Egyptian sport.
So far, the club plays its matches in Cairo Stadium and Al Salam Stadium.
Training is held in Ahly's old downtown club overlooking the Nile.

Egypt's PM inspects Downtown Towers, Lagoons project in New Alamein
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on Sunday inspected the Downtown Towers and Downtown Lagoons projects in New Alamein City to review their progress, his office said. Following meetings at the government's headquarters in the new coastal city, Madbouly toured the sites accompanied by Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, Sherif El-Sherbiny, and other ministry officials. At the Downtown Towers project, Madbouly said the aim was to make the area one of the most famous and attractive destinations globally and locally, through unique architectural designs situated around a lakes area. He added that the area would embody sustainability and the characteristics of a smart city with international standards. The housing minister explained that the project is being implemented by the Chinese company CSCEC, similar to the Central Business District towers in the New Administrative Capital. The project includes the construction of five fully-finished residential towers, featuring an 'iconic' tower 250 metres high (68 storeys) and four other towers each 200 metres high (56 storeys). Madbouly also reviewed the progress of the Downtown Lagoons project, which is situated between the towers. El-Sherbiny explained that the trial filling of the largest of the project's 11 lakes has begun to test its equipment, components, insulation, and engineering works. He noted that the project also includes islands, a tourist promenade, and paths for bicycles and electric cars.

South Africa, Mali battle for Group C top spot
After navigating the twists and turns of Group C, the reigning African champions South Africa and West African dark horses Mali now find themselves on a collision course with the Group C top slot at stake at the ongoing TotalEnergies WAFCON 2024 in Morocco. With four points each from a possible six, both teams will be looking for bragging rights and an opportunity to finish the group stage on a high note. Away from becoming table leaders, the result of this fixture will determine the quarterfinal matchups going forward. One game at a time If it is not broken, why fix it? For a team that has already won the WAFCON, the Banyana Banyana know a thing or two about how to excel at tournament football. It is a whole different ball game. Dr Desiree Ellis' outfit are right on cue, efficient in the final third and solid at the back. They have only conceded once – a diagonal header by Tanzania's Opa Clement. Mexico-based midfielder Amogelang Motau, who won the title with South Africa three years ago is in high spirits ahead of the tie against Mali and says, 'The mentality going into this tournament was to take it one game at a time. That is what won us the tournament in 2022. We came in as contenders and our goal is to finish top.' 'Off the field, we are a very solid team. We are going through a transition. We are making it look seamless, but it is not. There's going to be a lot of player rotation. There are new players coming into the team. There are good seniors who are guiding us.' Ellis, who sought rotation against Tanzania making four changes, affirms this and believes that her squad has the character of champions as they try to defend their title. 'No game is easy because they [Mali] know that they are in it as well. We know what we have to do that is very important to us. We want to rotate the ball quicker and be more efficient in the final third.' 'We are working on what we need to learn from the other games and how we need to help each other on the pitch. We want to stay true to who we are because the minute we put the ball on the ground; there will be some very good moments. Getting into the final third with those movements with that quick combination play and that is what we need to do.' Respectful but not scared Facing defending champions can sometimes force an opponent into early submission but not Mali. Les Aigles Dames have been building their confidence from the onset. They are meticulate in the way that they approach games and more importantly, they know how to win. Their opponents – Tanzania (1-0) and Ghana (1-1) will never forget Mali. Even when it looked like both sides were dominating play for the most part, before they knew it, Mali was walking down the tunnel with big smiles on their faces, content and with their chins up. It is the killer instint that is crucial in tournament football. Mali have mastered this. And at the heart of it all is head coach Mohamed Saloum whose evergreen tactics continue to inspire a young and spirited Malian side that is here to write history – slowly but surely. 'We know South Africa very well. They are compact. We think that in this competition as defending champions, they are a tough team to play. Each team has their own philosophy, and we shall rely on our quality. We shall respond accordingly. Did anyone think that Tanzania will draw with South Africa? This is football. We will bring all our leverage to make sure that it works on our side as we chase the first place,' Saloum says with confidence. The last time the two sides faced each other was at the 2018 edition when South Africa edged Mali 2-0 thanks to goals by Thembi Kgatlana and Lebohang Ramalepe. But Saloum believes that his side have since evolved. They have grown in stature and will approach this game with the maturity that it deserves. Yakare Niakaté, who features for Nice in France at club level, says with a composed smile, 'There are two teams in this fixture but for me, there is no favourite team. They [South Africa] are a good team that is competitive and that won the title but we as Mali are here to represent our country and show what we can do. We are here now. We know our quality. We shall do everything possible to gain positives from the game.' Playing in her first ever WAFCON, Niakaté admits that, 'It is a great pleasure to be in the biggest tournament of Africa. We played against Ghana – a big team in Africa, we faced Tanzania who are also coming up now and now, we are going to face the defending champions, this is exactly where I want to be. I want to express myself on the field of play and play against the best teams in Africa.' Mali's best performance was back in 2018 when they reached the semifinals and according to Saloum, they want to get to the podium – better their last result.
