SCO partnership supports Egypt's modernization, regional stability: Chinese ambassador
Chinese Ambassador to Cairo Liao Liqiang spoke about the SCO's evolution and its growing relevance for Egypt, emphasising China's commitment to strengthening cooperation between the organization and the Egyptian government.
Founded in 2001 in Shanghai by China, Russia, Uzbekistan and other countries, the SCO has expanded from six founding members to ten, alongside observer states and partner countries. Liao highlighted that the organization is now the world's largest comprehensive regional body in terms of member states' population, land area and geographic reach—spanning Asia, Europe and Africa.
The ambassador noted that Egypt became a dialogue partner of the SCO in 2022, enabling it to participate in all related dialogues and initiatives. 'The organization strives for justice and fairness—principles clearly reflected in its charter, which emphasises respect for different civilizations, shared development, dialogue, sovereignty, and resolving disputes through consultation,' he said.
He added that the SCO promotes mutual benefit and regional security through confidence-building measures among member states, covering areas such as security, defence, border protection, intelligence cooperation, and countering terrorism, separatism and extremism. 'We want to strengthen cooperation with Egypt in combating terrorism,' Liao stated, underlining that the organization also supports economic growth both for its members and globally.
Such cooperation, he noted, contributes to Egypt's modernization process, creates economic opportunities, and fosters dialogue between Egypt and other countries, aligning with the aspirations of the Egyptian people.
This year, the SCO has prioritised sustainable development, and will hold a major summit from late August to early September expected to attract a wide range of global participants. The summit aims to enhance mutual political trust, increase trade exchanges, and boost the efficiency of cooperation mechanisms. Egypt's accession as a dialogue partner also reflects the organization's expansion into Africa and its commitment to deeper cooperation with the continent.
Highlighting recent diplomatic milestones, Liao described the visit of Chinese Premier Li Qiang to Egypt as 'historic and highly significant.' It was the first visit by a Chinese premier to Egypt in 16 years and Premier Li's first stop on his inaugural trip to Africa. The ambassador said the visit demonstrates the keen interest of Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government in strengthening ties with Egypt.
During his visit, Premier Li held discussions and exchanged views with Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, which Liao said further reinforced the partnership between the two countries, especially given the current regional and global context.

He was planning to carry out the terrorist plot in collaboration with Ehab Abdel-Latif Mohamed Abdel-Qader, a member of the movement who is wanted for attempted attacks on several high-profile figures. Following permission from the Supreme State Security Prosecution, a raid was conducted on the hideout of the terrorists. The terrorists began firing randomly at the forces and the area surrounding the property, prompting a counter-terrorism operation. The exchange of fire resulted in their deaths, as well as the death of a citizen who happened to be passing by, who succumbed to his injuries as a result of the terrorists' indiscriminate gunfire. A force officer was also injured while attempting to rescue the citizen. The Supreme State Security Prosecution was notified and is conducting investigations. Egypt's FM seeks deeper economic, security ties on five-nation West Africa tour
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty began a five-nation tour of West Africa on Monday, leading a high-level business delegation in a push to bolster economic ties and deepen security cooperation across a region facing significant challenges. The tour, which will also include stops in Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali, and Senegal, kicked off in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, where Abdel-Aty held a series of meetings with top Nigerian officials and the regional ECOWAS bloc, the Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement. Abdelatty is accompanied by a delegation of 30 heads and representatives of major Egyptian companies, signaling a strong focus on leveraging trade and investment to reinforce diplomatic partnerships. During bilateral talks with his Nigerian counterpart, Yusuf Tuggar, Abdel-Aty stressed the growing momentum in relations, particularly since the first-ever ministerial-level political consultation was held in Cairo in January 2025. The two ministers discussed enhancing cooperation in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, energy, mining, construction, and information technology. Abdel-Aty said the business forum held during the visit was an ideal platform to deepen private sector partnerships and explore joint investment opportunities. In a significant diplomatic development during the forum, Nigeria's Foreign Minister Tuggar officially announced his country's support for the Egyptian candidate for UNESCO Director-General, Khaled El-Enany, ahead of elections in October. The Egyptian candidate, who was present at the meetings, also attended the bilateral talks where Abdel-Aty thanked Nigeria for its support of the candidacy within the African Union. In a separate meeting in Abuja, Abdelatty met with Abdel-Fatau Musah, the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The Egyptian foreign minister offered to expand cooperation with the regional bloc to combat rising terrorism and extremism in the Sahel and West Africa. He said Egypt was ready to share its expertise through training and technical support for the regional counter-terrorism force. 'Egypt will not hesitate to provide all necessary support and assistance to the countries of the region in their efforts to combat terrorism and extremist thought,' Abdelatty said, highlighting the role of Egyptian institutions like the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution and Al-Azhar in promoting moderation. The discussions also covered Egypt's ongoing capacity-building support for Nigeria through the Egyptian Agency for Partnership for Development (EAPD).
