Auburn's Bruce Pearl gives his take on the 'halves vs. quarters' debate
One of the biggest debates headlining this offseason of college basketball is the pros and cons of moving to a quarter format over the current format of halves, and Auburn's head man has weighed in.
Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl did not have much to say on the topic during a recent appearance on The Sideline with Andy Katz. Still, he did show favoritism toward switching to quarters by saying he wants the game to be played "just like everybody else."
Men's college basketball is the only entity of college basketball that still plays two halves. NCAA Women's basketball made the switch from halves to quarters before the 2015-16 season, and the NCAA is looking at possibly making the switch, as cited in a recent press release.
'In considering the decisions last month, the NCAA Men's Basketball Committee had conversations about ways to continue this direction in the upcoming years, which includes positive momentum for moving the men's game from halves to quarters,' the NCAA said in a press release. 'The committee realizes there are hurdles to implementing the quarter format to the game, including the structuring of media timeouts to accommodate commercial inventory. The committee recommended NCAA Division I conferences create a joint working group to provide feedback on the potential change from halves to quarters.'
Making the move from halves to quarters would create new game plans for coaches that will include foul trouble and clock management, which could be seen as an issue for some coaches in terms of adapting. The possible change from halves to quarters is the second-largest rule change discussed this offseason. In addition to the game format, the NCAA is exploring ways to allow coaches to challenge several calls, such as out-of-bounds plays and goaltending.
Potential rule changes will be a great topic of offseason discussion and will be worth following as we wait for the season to begin in November.

UNC football expected to be featured on ESPN a lot this season
Expect to see a lot of UNC football on ESPN The countdown to the 2025 college football season rolls on as the month of July wraps up and for the North Carolina Tar Heels, they will usher in a new era under head coach Bill Belichick. After moving on from Mack Brown, the Tar Heels made a big splash and hired Belichick to be the next head coach in hopes of turning this program around. Belichick's hiring also put North Carolina in the national spotlight all offseason but that hype has to translate to the field. However, the Tar Heels will continue to be a hot topic as long as Belichick is in charge. And now, ESPN is looking to take advantage of that with its broadcast schedule. Per Front Office Sports, ESPN networks are 'poised' to show 8 to 10 UNC games this season, showcasing the Tar Heels on their networks with the hope of catching a Deion Sanders-like impact: ESPN networks are poised to show 8, if not 10, of Belichick's first games as UNC coach, sources tell Front Office Sports. 'We have to wait and see. The potential is there,' ESPN senior director of programming and acquisitions Kurt Dargis told FOS. 'There's definitely interest in him outside the typical college football fan. Deion was such a phenomenon. I still can't believe some of the numbers we got that first year he was there. It's too early to say.' Like Sanders, Belichick will make his debut at home against TCU. However, this is in primetime as a standalone game on Labor Day in Chapel Hill. That game is set to be broadcast on ESPN. UNC will also be on an ESPN channel for at least two Friday games when they face off against Cal and Syracuse in October. Whether you like it or not, the nation will get a lot of Belichick and the Tar Heels on their TVs. Broncos salary cap update going into training camp
As the Denver Broncos go into training camp, the team has more than $12.5 million in available salary cap space for the 2025 season. The exact number is uncertain, and the projections vary based on the source. estimates the team has $12,621,678 available. lists the number at $12,928,947. Let's just say it's above $12.5 million. That's enough cap space to give the Broncos wiggle room to add veterans if injuries pop up, and it also gives the team a cushion for when players go on injured reserve and still count against the cap. Denver typically likes to have around $10 million available for the season, so fans shouldn't expect any more big splash moves from the Broncos. Denver might soon begin giving contract extensions to key players, but that wouldn't hurt their 2025 cap space as the team's extension candidates are already signed for this season. The big names to watch on the extension front are wide receiver Courtland Sutton, pass rusher Nik Bonitto and defensive linemen Zach Allen and John Franklin-Myers. The Broncos are probably done signing big-name outside free agents, but notable in-house extensions could be on deck in the coming weeks and months. Stay tuned. NFL Draft analyst states Spartans QB Aidan Chiles will be a future 'top-5 pick'
I have two takes from watching Aidan Chiles' tape1. He is multiple years away from being ready to start in the NFL, and focusing on him for the 2026 class is probably a waste of time2. At some point in the future, he will be a top-5 pickIdk if I've seen a first-year starter… One NFL Draft analyst believes Michigan State quarterback Aidan Chiles has all the tools to be a top pick in a few years. Popular NFL Draft analyst and write James Foster posted a pair of "takes" on Chiles on social media on Wednesday that generated a lot of buzz. One of which being that he thinks Chiles will be a "top-5 pick" in the 2027 NFL Draft. "I (don't know) if I've seen a first-year starter attack the deep sideline like this," Foster wrote in his social media post. "Arm talent to access the entire field, and rare anticipation for a 19-year old. My early QB1 for the 2027 class" The other notable take from Foster is to essentially not focus on Chiles for the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft as he believes further progression will be needed throughout this upcoming season. Chiles is entering his second season as the Spartans starter, throwing for 2,415 yards, 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions during his first year. He also ran for 225 yards and three touchdowns last season. You can see the full post from Foster -- which includes a video package that shows Chiles' arm strength and potential that Foster loves: I'm personally all-in on Chiles and have high expectations for him this upcoming season. Like Foster, I want to see more consistency from game-to-game (even possession-to-possession) but believe he has the ceiling to really lift Michigan State this upcoming season. If he hits that ceiling, I would consider Michigan State a lock for a bowl game and even fringe College Football Playoff contender should some other things break the Spartans way. Michigan State opens the 2025 season on August 29 in a home matchup against Western Michigan. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will be televised on FS1.
