Withdraw notification to acquire Bitra island: Lakshadweep MP in Lok Sabha
Sayeed said the government does not have any compensation plan for the residents of Bitra, which is the smallest island in Lakshadweep, and added that the defence acquisition would affect the massive lagoon there, which serves as the largest economic zone for the fishermen from the entire archipelago.
'I represent Lakshadweep constituency which is a Scheduled Tribe area. It's socially and economically backward and now there is a notification which has been issued by the Revenue Department of Lakshadweep which talks about acquiring Bitra Island, which is the smallest island in Lakshadweep, not more than a kilometre and not having more than 500 people living there,' Sayeed said.
'But, it has the largest economic zone because the lagoon of Bitra Island is the largest in terms of area. It's bigger than any island in Lakshadweep. Fishermen from all the islands go camp there, fish and it's a big economic opportunity for them,' he added.
Further, Sayeed said: the pretext on which the Revenue department is acquiring this land is national security. 'For the last so many decades, after independence, we have never had any issue of national security, Sir. For national security, Bitra already has a Coast Guard unit and a Navy unit.
'My humble suggestion through you, Sir, to the government is that immediately this notification should be withdrawn which is an ill-conceived plan which does not have any compensation for those who are already existing there. I urge the government that it should be withdrawn,' he told the Chair.
HT reported on July 20 that Lakshadweep administration was moving to acquire the entire Bitra island for transfer to India's defence and strategic agencies, triggering fears among residents about displacement from their traditional fishing grounds.
A notification issued on July 11 by the territory's revenue department for a social impact assessment cited the island's 'strategic location, national security relevance and inherent logistical and administrative challenges associated with civilian habitation' as justification for the takeover.
HT reported that the acquisition would affect Bitra's 350 residents, who depend on fishing and coconut cultivation, and impact a crucial 45-sq km lagoon area used by fishermen from across the archipelago.

A BIG headload being carried by a passenger fell on others, causing the stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station on February 15 in which 18 people were killed, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Rajya Sabha Friday, citing a probe report. He said that a high-level inquiry committee constituted to examine the circumstances leading to the stampede has submitted its report. 'As per the findings of the report, an unfortunate incident on 15.02.25 happened on Foot Over Bridge (FOB)-3 stairs connecting Platform 14/15 at New Delhi Railway Station. On the day of the incident, sufficient crowd management protocols were in place to handle the overall volume of passengers at the station. There was a gradual increase of passenger density on the FOB after 20.15 hrs,' said Vaishnaw in a written reply to questions asked by Samajwadi Party MP Ramji Lal Suman. Passengers were trying to board Prayagraj-bound trains for the Mahakumbh when the incident occurred. Sharing the findings of the probe report, Vaishnaw said, 'Many of the passengers were carrying big headloads affecting smooth movement on the FOB. There was a big headload falling from one of the passengers and the pressure was passed on to the stairs of PF 14/15 stairs resulting in the tripping of passengers on the stairs. This led to an incident at 20.48 hrs on FOB-3, which was limited to the stairs of FOB. Consequently, passengers fell on each other. In the incident, 18 people lost their lives and 15 others were injured.' In March this year, the Railway Minister had told the Lok Sabha that on the day of the stampede the total ticket sold was 49,000 – 13,000 more than the daily average tickets sold over the previous six months. Of the 18 people who died in the stampede, 11 were women and four children. Eyewitnesses had alleged that the stampede took place because of 'lack of crowd management' at a time when a large number of people were trying to board the Prayagraj-bound trains. Following the incident, five senior officers, including the Divisional Railway Manager of Delhi, were transferred. In his written reply on Friday, Vaishnaw said that several measures have been taken after the incident to handle heavy rush at the stations. A total of 73 stations have been identified where permanent holding areas will be created. Pilot projects have started at New Delhi, Anand Vihar, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Ghaziabad stations. 'Two new designs of 12 metre wide (40 feet) and 6 metre wide (20 feet) standard FOB have been developed. These wide FOBs with ramps were very effective in crowd management during Mahakumbh. These new standard wide FOBs will be installed in all the stations. All major stations will have a senior officer as Station Director. All other departments will report to the Station Director. Station Director will get financial empowerment so that he can take on-the-spot decisions for improving the station,' the minister said. NEW DELHI: Expressing serious concern over the deleterious impact of addictive betting applications on youth, the Supreme Court on Friday asked the Centre to respond in two weeks what steps it is contemplating to save youngsters from getting financially ruined, often forcing them to commit suicide. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi asked the counsel for Centre to specify in its affidavit "what remedial measures it is contemplating after applying mind to the gravity of the issue". The counsel said another bench is examining whether these apps are akin to gambling, requiring them to be banned, and the decision in that case would have a direct bearing on reliefs sought in a PIL filed by K A Paul. But the bench said, "You (the Centre) do not appear to take the problem seriously". The judges also issued notices to some states, RBI, ED, TRAI, Google India, Apple India, Dream11 and other gaming companies to file responses in two weeks. The petitioner had sought a complete ban on illegal betting apps and strict regulation of online gaming and fantasy sports, alleging these are being popularised by film stars, famous cricketers and other celebrities and end up drawing youth to the apps like moths to a flame. He said the more than 150-year-old Public Gambling Act, 1867, is unable to deal with the menace. Over 24 incidents of suicide have been reported from Telangana alone in the last one and a half years and are directly linked to debt traps created by gambling/betting platforms.

Hyderabad: The race for a ticket to contest the bypoll to the Jubilee Hills constituency has intensified, with even a sitting MLA expressing keen interest in entering the fray. According to sources, turncoat MLA from Khairatabad, Danam Nagender , has sent feelers to the Congress leadership, indicating that if he is fielded for the bypoll, he can ensure party's victory not only in Jubilee Hills but also in Khairatabad constituency. Danam won the Khairatabad seat on a BRS ticket in 2023 and later joined the Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. A senior Congress leader stated that there is a high demand for the Jubilee Hills bypoll ticket. "Almost everyone in the Congress is of the opinion that whoever wins the bypoll will be given a cabinet berth. This is because there is currently no minister in the cabinet from Greater Hyderabad. The Congress failed to win any of the 24 seats in Greater Hyderabad during the 2023 assembly election.
