Green Light For PAK'nSAVE Takapuna

Foodstuffs North Island has been granted resource consent to build a new PAK'nSAVE in Takapuna, paving the way for a major investment that will bring more access to New Zealand's lowest food prices on Auckland's North Shore.
The 6,461m² store is expected to create over 200 jobs and will be located on a 9,826m² site with construction expected to be completed in 2029. The new store will offer 197 carparks and serve a growing catchment across Takapuna and the wider North Shore.
Foodstuffs North Island's General Manager of Retail & Property, Lindsay Rowles said: 'We're incredibly excited about our plans to bring PAK'nSAVE to the Takapuna community. Large vacant sites in this area are rare, and this is a great opportunity to create a modern, efficient store that helps more people access New Zealand's most trusted supermarket brand and our commitment to low grocery prices.'
PAK'nSAVE was ranked second overall in the 2025 Kantar Corporate Reputation Index (RepZ) and has led the Fairness pillar for nine years running, a reflection of its consistent focus on value.
The site sits within a floodplain that's indicated as having a 1% chance of being flooded in any given year and includes two overland flow paths. The proposed design has been carefully developed to respond to these challenges, with the retail floor located on level one above an undercroft carpark and includes a civil engineering solution to safely manage stormwater and flood risk.
'This is a thoughtfully designed development that responds to the site's constraints, while making sure we can deliver a safe and welcoming shopping experience,' says Rowles.
Once complete, PAK'nSAVE Takapuna will be the latest addition to the Foodstuffs North Island's co-operative of locally owned and operated stores, helping meet demand in one of Auckland's most dynamic and growing communities.

From the bathroom to the boardroom, New Zealanders are responding to notifications and messages in some pretty awkward places - and it reveals just how distracted and hurried we've become, a new survey from BNZ shows. The nationwide study found that most New Zealanders have responded to an email, text or notification while doing something else, with 35% admitting they've done so in the bathroom, 41% in the middle of a face-to-face conversation, and 28% while in a meeting or webinar. 'And when we're rushed or distracted like this, we make mistakes,' says BNZ Head of Fraud Operations, Margaret Miller. Nearly a quarter (24%) confess to clicking through to a 'great deal' without checking if the link was legitimate, while 19% have hit a link in a text before reading it properly. 'Scammers prey on the fact that when we're rushed, distracted, or juggling multiple things we're more likely to click first and think later,' Miller says. The study found that New Zealanders are generally aware of when they're most vulnerable, with 78% recognising that being distracted, rushed, multitasking, stressed or on autopilot makes them more likely to be scammed or make a mistake with online banking. Yet scammers are still succeeding. According to the survey, while 61% of Kiwis spotted a scam in the past year and avoided it, 12% weren't so lucky. Strategic design to slow scams down While individual vigilance remains the best defence and the banking sector continues to invest tens of millions in security each year, BNZ is also exploring a different approach through strategic design features that work with how people actually behave. 'While we all expect seamless digital experiences, we've learned that introducing small elements of friction at critical moments helps with focus and ultimately, keeps customers and their money safer,' says BNZ Head of Design, Donal Devlin. 'In practice, this means things like swapping button locations, adding brief pause notifications, or showing 'pause and think' alerts to help customers stay focused when making higher risk transactions or actions in their accounts. 'It's about finding the right balance between convenience and security – adding just enough of a moment to think when the stakes are highest." BNZ is also strengthening security in other ways, including being one of only two major banks to offer app-based authentication rather than text messages, which can be intercepted by scammers. The bank has also introduced online banking lock, which gives customers the ability to quickly disable all online banking activity and lock access to their online banking if they suspect a scammer has gained access to their accounts. It's all about working with human nature, not against it, Miller says. 'We know people are busy, we know they multi-task, and we know they sometimes rush. 'So, while customers should remain vigilant, we're also designing smart security features that give you a moment to double-check when it matters most.' Tips for improving your digital safety and security Pause before clicking - especially if you're doing something else at the same time Never click on links or attachments sent by someone you don't know or that seem out of character for someone you do know Keep your computer and phone security software up to date Contact your bank immediately if you think you've been scammed Red flags to watch for - BNZ will never: Email or text you links to online banking and ask you to log in Send you a text message with a link to a website, or link to call us Ask you for your PIN number or password Ask you to share the authentication codes sent to you by text or email, even with a BNZ staff member Ask you to transfer money to help catch a scammer or a bank employee who is scamming customers Send you a text message about account issues with a link to log in Ask you to download software to access your Internet Banking remotely Use international phone numbers to call or send you notifications The BNZ Safe and Secure Survey was conducted by Insights HQ in May 2025, with sample sizes ranging from n=235 to n=478 depending on the question. Overall survey results were weighted to be nationally representative by age (15+ years), gender, and region based on Census 2020.

Today's Letters to the Editor from readers cover topics including when cheap power was an advantage, why nuclear bombs are no good to Iran, and the charm of gumboots. Shooting ourselves in the foot over reforms In New Zealand we seem to have developed a talent for turning competitive advantages into disadvantages. Remember the days when cheap electricity was a competitive advantage for New Zealand. We had industries here based on that cheap electricity. Then we had the Bradford reforms to make electricity even cheaper. Somehow that ended up maximising the price for all New Zealanders and contributing to the closure of those once burgeoning industries. Now something similar seems to be happening to other New Zealand products. Dairy and other commodity export prices are good, benefitting some. However, as detailed in the ODT (18.6.25), the hospitality industry is finding that butter, cheese and milk are becoming luxury items. If we are indeed the most efficient producers of dairy products in the world, why is this not giving a competitive advantage to other related New Zealand businesses and why are consumers being held to ransom? Economists I have heard on the subject simply shrug their shoulders and say we are an export-led economy. To me that sounds too simplistic, and I do not think it passes the sniff test. Something is off. There is no doubt that we need to seriously rework our electricity system. I think that present circumstances, where good export income results in benefit for a few, and high prices and inflation for the rest, suggests that there are other areas that deserve close attention. PTSD In response to Dave Tackney (Letters ODT 24.6.25), hasn't it occurred to Mr Tackney that Māori people, as a collective and in general, have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. After being invaded by the English, lied to, manipulated, subjugated with superior weapons, their land and sources of food stolen, made third-class citizens and impoverished, it is understandable that a chasm would manifest in their spirit. And let's not forget that the English, whether royalists or Cromwellians had perfected their tactics on the Irish for centuries, leading to expulsion from their land and famine. I will not say that the Māori people are victims of abuse by a foreign power because the word victim is demeaning and patronising to them. Obviously, their trauma and anger are misdirected and it is always with sorrow that we hear about the children who are victims in their turn. Metiria Stanton Turei is not trying to divide the country along racial lines, the arrival of the colonising English did it, then subsequent governments enforced it. Atomic fallout Re Greg Glendining letter (25.6.25) claiming our learned Prof Robert Patman to be stunningly naive believing Iran's claims they don't want a nuclear bomb, they just want uranium for peaceful purposes like other countries for electricity etc. A fact Mr Glendining strongly disagrees with. Well I will tell you why a nuclear bomb is no good to Iran and useless on Israel. Grab a map of the Middle East and see how close the borders are to Gaza, Lebanon and Syria. These countries are packed together. If they drop a nuclear bomb on Israel the nuclear radiation fallout would destroy the very people Iran claims to be fighting for. That's why they have developed non-nuclear drones and missiles. At the same time, if Iran did have a nuclear weapon as a deterrent against attack, Israel and the Zionists of Israel and America would not have attacked Iran, the very same reason they haven't attacked North Korea which has nuclear weapons as a deterrent. Photo heart-warming moment in week of woes Amongst all the doom and gloom of articles and photographs in current newspapers, especially those relating to terrible events overseas, how lovely to see that wonderful photograph on the front page of the Otago Daily Times (25.6.25), of the little boy seated amongst all the discarded muddy gumboots, as one of his own falls to the ground. Hopefully his mum or dad was standing there to retrieve it for him. I often smile when I see rows of bashful muddy gumboots standing in a row outside country cafes in New Zealand. I find the sight quite charming, as it is I think very much a Kiwi custom; I never saw this in any other country overseas. How nice of our farmers and workmen to be so considerate, and also not to risk a rebuke if they trail mud inside. The only thing I wonder at, looking at that photo of the very many pairs left in rows of disarray outside the Hindon Hall on Saturday, is that they all look the same (apart from various layers of mud on them) and how does each owner recognise his or her own rightful pair? Never mind the swear words, politicians need to raise debate quality

I don't believe people are genuinely shocked by the language we're all hearing every night on our streaming TV shows. What is shocking is the standard of argument being employed by politicians and parties as they seek to score points with silly populist arguments. On my Facebook and Instagram feeds, the Labour Party has been trying to tell me that the Government is to blame for soaring butter prices. It has posted a chart of butter prices pointing out that they have doubled since the National-led coalition came to power. That's annoyed me on a number of levels. Despite the fact it seems to enrage many Kiwis, soaring dairy prices are clearly a net gain for the economy. We sell a lot more internationally than we consume locally and the current dairy price spike is expected to bring in an additional $10 billion in export revenue over this year and next. It's exactly what our economy needed. The impact on consumers is overstated. Butter prices have doubled in two years. You used to be able to get a 500g block for about $4.50 now it's about $8.50. That's an extra $4 a week, far less than petrol prices fluctuate on a regular basis. Also, there are numerous butter substitutes and blends that haven't risen nearly that much. I understand why someone on the Labour Party team has tried to milk the dairy price story (sorry for the pun). It is a headline grabber and an easy online meme. I bet the analytics on it look great. But it makes no sense in the real world. The Government has no control over international dairy prices. There are things a government could do to reduce the cost of butter for local consumers. They could subsidise the price with taxpayer money. Or they could impose price controls on farmers and force them to sell a certain amount locally. These would be terrible policies, and there is no chance Labour is about to adopt them. So butter prices would be exactly the same right now if they had won the last election. More broadly, inflation is running rampant like it was throughout 2021 and 2022. It has edged up to 2.5% but remains within the Reserve Bank's 1-3% target band. The same Stats NZ release that included the butter price graph also pointed out that annual rent price increases haven't been below 2.8% since 2011. Of course, much lower inflation isn't all good news. The fact it is underperforming so badly is giving economists confidence that inflation will stay subdued. The economy is struggling to get any momentum and there is no doubt a lot of people are doing it tough. There's no shortage of real issues with this recovery, which the current Government ought to take some responsibility for. Labour could legitimately be attacking the Government on unemployment and job security. There are tens of thousands more people on the Jobseeker benefit now than there were when Labour was in power. I don't mean to single out Labour either. The National Party spent a lot of time in opposition attacking Labour for letting those Jobseeker numbers rise. It also drives me crazy when the Government holds press conferences after the Official Cash Rate announcement to take credit for falling interest rates. Interest rates are falling because inflation is under control and the economy is underperforming. If they go much lower, it will be because things are getting worse, not better. Meanwhile, in the past week, we've had David Seymour running 'victim of the day' social media attacks on opponents of his regulatory standards bill. Seymour says he is being 'playful' and having 'fun' with his line, suggesting opponents are suffering from 'Regulatory Standards Derangement Syndrome'. Surely if the bill is worth putting before Parliament, then it must have been aimed at delivering some sort of meaningful change to the status quo. Let's have a grown-up debate about what that intended change is. What's frustrating about political debate in 2025 is that politicians are so quick to build 'straw man' arguments because they seem easy to sell as memes and headlines. A 'straw man', for the record, is where you present a weak version or flawed version of your opponent's argument so you can easily dismiss it. It's lazy and doesn't do anything to boost the quality of policy-making in this country. It's probably too much to ask, but wouldn't it be nice if our politicians were confident enough in their view to employ the opposite of a 'straw man' argument? That's called a 'steel-man' argument. It requires you to consciously present the strongest and most charitable version of your opponent's argument. Then you explain why it still doesn't stack up. It requires you to do a bit of homework and think through the logical basis for your argument. I'm pretty sure all the leaders of our political parties are smart enough to do that. But we seem to be following a depressing international trend which sees social media debate reduce everything to simplistic points which appeal to an increasingly tribal political base. New Zealand has a cyclical recovery underway that would have happened, at a greater or lesser pace, regardless of who was in power. Scrapping over that is pointless. We need to be looking ahead to how we lift the economy at a structural level and enable higher levels of cyclical growth. That requires some serious work and will need a higher quality of debate than what we've been seeing this year. This column will take a two-week break as the author is on holiday with his family.
