Red Sox Listed as Suitor for Rockies' All-Star Ryan McMahon Ahead of Trade Deadline

Red Sox Listed as Suitor for Rockies' All-Star Ryan McMahon Ahead of Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Boston Red Sox have done a serviceable job patching the hole at first base after Triston Casas' season-ending injury. Although Rafael Devers electing to take over the position was preferred, Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez are combining for a .281 batting average, five home runs, 19 RBIs, and a 0.3 WAR. Again, serviceable, if not surprising.

Despite the success of Toro and Gonzalez, Red Sox first basemen rank 25th in baseball, according to FanGraphs, including the short stints of Casas and Nick Sogard. As the trade deadline approaches, it is evident the Red Sox can improve the position.
While Diamondbacks' slugger Josh Naylor or Orioles' Ryan O'Hearn would be tremendous acquisitions, NESN's Jay Pritchard believes Boston should make a move for Colorado Rockies' infielder Ryan McMahon as their deadline upgrade.

McMahon, 30, is primarily a third baseman but did spend time at first base through the first five years of his career. Though 75 games, McMahon is slashing .225/.311/.416 – all noticeably lower than the combined numbers of Toro and Gonzalez. Power is where McMahon makes up the difference. With 12 home runs and 25 RBIs, McMahon would become their best-hitting first baseman this season and the third-most home runs on the team.

McMahon is not just a slugger. He provides tremendous defense, especially at the hot corner, accumulating the second-most defensive runs saved among third basemen. Signed through 2027, McMahon will not come cheap, and prying players away from Colorado is never easy, but it is the insurance McMahon can provide that makes a deal worth considering.
Third baseman Alex Bregman has a player option for the 2026 season that he is not expected to exercise. With Devers now gone, Boston will do their best to retain Bregman, but if the two-time All-Star elects to leave, having McMahon, a former All-Star in his own right, on the roster cushions the potential blow.
The Red Sox deadline approach is unknown after the Devers trade. Will chief baseball officer Craig Breslow be aggressive or do just enough to keep the team afloat while preparing for a bigger free agency plan? For an organization currently in a transition period, acquiring McMahon might be the happy medium.

ESPN star slams WNBA players' treatment of Caitlin Clark amid All-Star ranking controversy

ESPN broadcaster Dick Vitale came to the defense of Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark after her WNBA peers voted her as the ninth-best All-Star guard. Clark's ranking was a shock to many across the social media landscape. She was named one of the captains for the All-Star Game and received more than 1.2 million fan votes. The WNBA determined All-Star starters based on fan rank, media rank and player rank. The total weighted score helped determine the starters. The second-year guard was ranked ninth among her fellow All-Stars, "It is ABSURD the way that a # of players in the @WNBA have treated @CaitlinClark22! So sad but I bet they love the CHARTER FLIGHTS -the increase in SALARIES - the CROWDS -the TV Ratings since she arrived from @IowaWBB. No doubt she is THE BEST - thing to happen to the WNBA," he wrote on X. He was far from the only one who voiced his opinion on the issue. One potential reason why Clark's peers ranked her so low among guards is due to playing only nine of the Fever's 16 games this season. Clark has been dealing with injuries in her sophomore season, which continues now as she's missed the last two games. Clark had been struggling lately as well, going just 13-of-47 from three-point territory in her last three games. Still, Clark is averaging 18.2 points, 8.9 assists, five rebounds and 1.6 steals over 33.3 minutes per game this season. Only the Phoenix Mercury's Alyssa Thomas – who could be among the 12 All-Star Game reserves, which will be selected by the league's head coaches and announced this Sunday – has more assists per game (9.3), and she's touched the hardwood in 12 contests this season. While Clark has been integral in the rise of the WNBA's popularity since breaking rookie and league records last season with the Fever, there have been many contentious moments with opponents. All the incidents became the talk of the sports world for a few days. But Clark and Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier will be the ones drafting players to their All-Star squads, and now they know who will be starting with them at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Clark's Fever home, on July 19. Phillies Activate Bryce Harper Off Injured List Ahead of Padres Game

Phillies Activate Bryce Harper Off Injured List Ahead of Padres Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies have been without first baseman Bryce Harper since the beginning of June. He went onto the injured list with a wrist injury and has been slowly working his way back. And finally, ahead of the San Diego Padres game, the Phillies announced some good news. Advertisement According to the Phillies, they have activated Harper off the injured list and designated for assignment utility man Buddy Kennedy. Harper is back on the active roster, and the Phillies, in the time he missed, got back out to a 1.5 game lead over the New York Mets for the NL East division. Harper missed three and a half weeks, but the Phillies stayed afloat, even amid an atrocious series against the Houston Astros. Now facing the team where Harper had the swing of his life against, he's back on the roster and ready to go. While the Phillies built a lead in the NL East, Harper's return to the lineup is a much-needed boost. The offense has been struggling, and Harper's return should inject a much-needed spark into the offense. Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper (3) is congratulated by teammates in the dugout after scoring a run against the Athletics during the first inning at Sutter Health Lee-Imagn Images Before landing on the injured list, Harper was hitting .258 with nine home runs and 34 RBIs. While not his best production, he was still one of the Phillies' best hitters. Harper's .814 OPS is the second highest on the team, behind only Kyle Schwarber. Advertisement Adding his bat to the lineup will be a huge addition, and one that the Phillies' offense has sorely needed amid their struggles this month. Fortunately, the Phillies have been able to win games in Harper's absence thanks to incredible pitching from the whole rotation. Now, back in the lineup, the Phillies look to rekindle their dimming offense against the Padres with Harper back in the fold. The 32-year-old is back for the Phillies, just in time to try and separate themselves from the Mets in the NL East.
