Suniel Shetty Says Star Kids Face More Pressure Today: 'Everybody Believes They Are A Critic'

Last Updated: Suniel Shetty reflects on the evolving film industry, stating that star kids today face more pressure than before due to fierce competition and constant public scrutiny. Having spent over three decades in the film industry, Suniel Shetty has worn many hats — from being the quintessential action hero of the '90s to dabbling in negative roles and now thriving in the OTT space. As he gears up for the release of Hunter Season 2, the veteran actor opened up in an interview with Hindustan Times about the shifting landscape of Bollywood, especially for newcomers. Shetty, who carved his place in the industry without a filmi background, recalled facing resistance in his early years for not fitting the 'conventional hero" mold. 'People told me I didn't look like a hero," he said. Yet, he persevered and went on to become one of the defining action stars of his generation. However, when asked about the current crop of newcomers, Shetty had an interesting take. Contrary to the belief that star kids have it easy, he argued that today's industry is far less forgiving. 'The kids have to work harder to prove themselves," he explained. 'Earlier, they assumed they'd automatically be a part of the film world. Today, they know they have to educate themselves, be prepared — whether it's acting, body language, or everything else. You can't skip the fundamentals." He pointed out that while competition is undoubtedly fierce, it's the audience scrutiny that's become relentless. 'Everyone is a critic today," Shetty observed. 'But it's not constructive criticism — it's about trashing films and performances. That kind of judgment takes a toll." His own children have experienced the highs and lows of the industry. Daughter Athiya Shetty made her debut with Hero in 2015 but quietly stepped away from acting after her 2019 release Motichoor Chaknachoor didn't click at the box office. Son Ahan Shetty entered the scene with Tadap in 2021 and now has Border 2 and Sanki in the pipeline. Meanwhile, Suniel continues to reinvent himself. In Hunter Season 2 on Amazon MX Player, he shares screen space with Jackie Shroff, Anusha Dandekar, and Barkha Bisht, proving that even after 30 years, he's still got his finger on the pulse of the times. Suniel Shetty says star kids have to work harder today as 'everybody is a critic' now: 'It's critical bashing going on'

Suniel Shetty has been in the film industry for over three decades. Having begun as an action star, he found success as a villain too, and is now enjoying fame on streaming as well. In a conversation with HT while promoting the second season of his show, Hunter, the veteran star spoke about the change in times from when he started to now. Suniel Shetty with his children, actors Athiya Shetty and Ahan Shetty. Early in his career in the 90s, Suniel Shetty faced resistance for his unorthodox looks, with many saying he didn't 'look like' a hero. The actor agrees that outsiders - those who had no film background - often faced bigger pressures while starting out. However, he says that as compared to 30 years ago, star kids find it more difficult to succeed now. On star kids' struggles "The kids have to work harder to prove. Earlier, they took it for granted that I'd be a part of this. This is my hierarchy, and I'd be a part of this. Today, the kid knows to educate (themselves) and come prepared as an actor, with their acting, body, and everything else. You need to be absolutely prepared. Go to school and come; don't believe you can walk into high school and college without finishing the basics," says the actor. He says the reason star kids find it tougher is partially because of the competition, but also because of the scathing feedback that comes their way from the audience. "Everybody is judgmental. Everybody believes they are a critic. And it's not critical appreciation of cinema. It's critical trashing of cinema that's going on," he says. Athiya and Ahan Shetty's careers Both of Suniel Shetty's children - Athiya and Ahan - made their debut in films over the last few years. Athiya started her acting career with Hero in 2015, before appearing in three more films. She eventually retired from acting quietly after her last film - Motichoor Chaknachoor (2019) - did not work at the box office. Ahan debuted with Tadap in 2021, and currently has Border 2 and Sanki lined up for release next year. Suniel was most recently seen in the Amazon MXPlayer show Hunter. Season 2 also stars Jackie Shroff, Anusha Dandekar, and Barkha Bisht in lead roles.

Suniel Shetty talks about working with Jackie Shroff in 'Hunter S2': 'Personally, it was tough for me...'

Mumbai: Actor called his 'Hunter S2' co-star a 'brilliant natural actor with a great voice, aura, and presence that's unmatched.' Shedding light on his experience working with Jackie, Suniel said, "So many people have always hero-worshipped Jaggu Dada, and I've admired him for years too. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Personally, it was tough for me to go head-to-head with him in action scenes. But I had to block out the personal rapport and focus on our characters in the show." Admiring the 'Hero' actor's charismatic persona, he added, "Dada is a brilliant natural actor, with a great voice, aura, and presence that's unmatched. It takes a lot to stand up to him, even if it's on screen. But I believe when you work with the best, you deliver your best." In the second season of the action entertainer, Vikram Sinha (played by Suniel), a suspended special investigations officer, is caught on a relentless mission to rescue his daughter from a shadowy arms dealer only known as the Salesman (played by Jackie). Recently, Suniel opened up about his conscious effort to bring extra depth to his character in 'Hunter 2.' During an exclusive interaction with IANS, Suniel said that everything about his character—body language, appearance, and emotions—has evolved. He shared, "I am very different in this season. The body language is different. The look is different. The emotions are different. Carefree and careless, Vikram Sinha was in the first. Here, it is more about family. And that is his only objective. There is no disturbance, but no other distraction in his life. He wants his daughter back, and at any cost. He will go to any lengths to get that happening. So, I think that itself is a beautiful moment. " 'Tu Meri...'
