Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis arrives in India to strengthen strategic ties
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, welcomed the Greek minister, "Warm welcome to Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis of Greece on his official visit to India. His visit will further strengthen India-Greece ties & enhance our growing strategic partnership," in a post on X.
India and Greece have historically maintained warm and cooperative relations, supporting each other on key international matters, including Kashmir and Cyprus. Greece has consistently refrained from making statements on recent developments in Jammu & Kashmir, aligning with India's concerns on the issue. Additionally, Athens has extended its backing for India's quest for a permanent seat in an expanded United Nations Security Council (UNSC), reinforcing the strong diplomatic ties between the two countries.
The Indian community in Greece has steadily grown over the years. As per the 2011 Greek census, there were 11,333 Indian nationals in the country, with estimates now ranging between 13,000 and 14,000. The majority of Indian expatriates in Greece are of Punjabi origin, predominantly Sikhs, engaged in sectors like farming, construction, and manufacturing. Many individuals initially arrived on temporary permits and later secured residency through various amnesty programs offered by the Greek government, with the last major amnesty occurring in 2005.
Economic collaboration between the two nations has also seen significant developments in recent years. Indian infrastructure giant GMR Airports Ltd., in partnership with Greek company GEK-Terna, is leading an EUR 850 million project to construct a new airport in Kasteli, Crete. This marks the first major Indian investment in Greece, with a 35-year contract that includes five years of construction followed by 30 years of operational management. Additionally, Indian multinational UPL Hellas has established a presence in Greece, focusing on agricultural solutions, including fertilisers and bio solutions, catering to Greek farmers and the broader regional market.

IndiGo launches flight operations from Hindon Airport, connecting 9 cities
Hindon: Indian Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu has launched new flight routes from Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad, to be operated by IndiGo. After Air India Express, IndiGo becomes the second airline to mark its presence in Hindon Airport. Four months ago, Air India Express started its operations here. Hindon Airport in NCR will now be connected with nine Indian cities -- Bengaluru, Kolkata, Varanasi, Goa, Patna, Chennai, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Indore through IndiGo services. "This is an (Udan) success of, Hindon, Ghaziabad, western Uttar Pradesh, and entire country. This is an Udan of the ambitions and aspirations of common Indians," the Union minister said from the Hindon Airport. Airlines fleet, airports, terminal capacity, and flyers have doubled in India over the past decade, the minister said, reflecting the growth India's civil aviation sector has made. "During 2024-2034, civil aviation in tier II and III cities will grow and we will have to unlock the potential. Hindon will serve as an example," the minister said. With operations from both Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) and Hindon Airport (HDO), flyers based out of the National Capital Region will be served by these two airports. The Hindon Airport's development work was taken up in 2019 under UDAN at Rs 50 crore, in collaboration with Indian Air Force, Minister Naidu said in his address. Minister, during his speech, said the annual flyers from Hindon Airport was about 8,000 in 2019, which has risen to upwards of 80,000 now. Union Budget 2025-26 has put an additional thrust on the ever-growing domestic civil aviation sector. Inspired by the success of the previous regional connectivity scheme, a modified UDAN scheme will be launched to enhance regional connectivity to 120 new destinations and carry 4 crore passengers in the next 10 years. The UDAN scheme, launched in April 2017, focuses on improving unserved air routes in underserved regions. India's aviation industry has experienced significant growth in the past decade, and the number of operational airports in the country has since doubled. The government aims to make India a global aviation hub by 2030.

India's forex reserves dip $3.06 bn to $696.67bn, second straight weekly decline
Mumbai: India's foreign exchange reserves fell by USD 3.06 billion to USD 696.67 billion for the week ending July 11, marking the second straight week of decline, according to the official data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In the previous reporting week of July 4, the country's forex reserves witnessed a slip of USD 3.049 billion to USD 699.736 billion. In the week ending July 11, foreign currency assets, which are the major constituent of the forex reserves, fell USD 2.477 billion to USD 588.81 billion, possibly becoming the major reason for the fall in the forex reserves. The Gold reserves, another major component of the forex, again witnessed a sharp fall of USD 498 million to USD 84.348 billion. The country's Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) with the global financial body, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), saw a dip of USD 66 million to USD 18.802 billion during the reporting week of July 11, according to the RBI data. The Reserve Position in the IMF also decreased by USD 24 million, according to the data. Central banks worldwide are increasingly accumulating safe-haven gold in their foreign exchange reserves kitty, and India is no exception. The share of gold maintained by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its foreign exchange reserves has almost doubled since 2021, till recently. In 2023, India added around USD 58 billion to its foreign exchange reserves, contrasting with a cumulative decline of USD 71 billion in 2022. In 2024, the reserves rose by a little over USD 20 billion, touching an all-time high of USD 704.885 billion at the end of September 2024. India's foreign exchange reserves (Forex) are sufficient to meet 11 months of the country's imports and about 96 per cent of external debt, said Governor Sanjay Malhotra while announcing the outcome of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decisions. The RBI governor expressed confidence, stating that India's external sector is resilient and key external sector vulnerability indicators are improving. Foreign exchange reserves, or FX reserves, are assets held by a nation's central bank or monetary authority, primarily in reserve currencies such as the US Dollar, with smaller portions in the Euro, Japanese Yen, and Pound Sterling. The RBI often intervenes by managing liquidity, including selling dollars, to prevent steep Rupee depreciation. The RBI strategically buys dollars when the Rupee is strong and sells when it weakens.

Nepal PM Oli invited for September visit to India, PM Modi likely to visit Nepal in November
Kathmandu: Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has received an invitation from India for a two-day official visit in September, sources confirmed to ANI. As per officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nepal, and another official from the Office of the Prime Minister, PM Oli has received an invitation for a visit to India from September 16. "This possibly will be the shortest visit of the Nepali Prime Minister to India. He has received the invitation for two days starting from September 16. Preparations for the visit have started upon receiving the invitation," the official from the Foreign Ministry told ANI. Nepali envoy to India, Shankar Prasad Sharma, in an interview with ANI on Saturday, also hinted at the visit, stating that Prime Minister Oli would travel to India "very soon," as both sides work toward finalising agreements in key areas. The ambassador's remarks came two days after Prime Minister Oli confirmed that a visit to India is on the cards. Speaking to ANI, Ambassador Sharma said that while no dates have been finalised, the visit is expected soon. "I think he will come to India very soon," he said. The Prime Minister's Office official, who spoke to ANI on condition of anonymity, also confirmed that preparations have started for his visit to India and are working on the agenda. "There won't be an announcement of new and big agendas. The visit will focus more on strengthening the Indo-Nepal relation and move forward with the ongoing projects in Nepal," the official told ANI. PM Oli, who assumed office in July last year for the fourth time, has yet to make an official visit to India. He chose China for his maiden foreign visit, breaking the traditional practice of visiting India first after taking office. In April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met PM Oli on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok. The two leaders reviewed bilateral ties and expressed satisfaction with the progress made in areas such as energy, connectivity, and people-to-people linkages. Another official from the MoFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Nepal, confirmed that the Indian side has also informed of the possibility of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Nepal in November. "It has been communicated that the Indian Prime Minister will visit Nepal in November. The Indian side hasn't communicated the dates, but they have given the probable month as November for the visit. Like before, his visit might focus on a tour to the religious sites of Nepal," the official told ANI.
