Business Mayor25-05-2025
I'm a third generation Mumbaikar, and given this background my education has been with the State Board and Mumbai University. I am a commerce graduate from RA Podar College, and my post graduate degree is a Masters in Management Studies, specialising in Finance from METIMS. How did you land up in this job?
My previous roles had been with various brokerage houses in the institutional equities research department, conducting fundamental and thematic research for nearly 15 years across various sectors, including Autos, Auto Ancillary, Logistics, Capital goods, & Oil and Gas. I joined ITI AMC in June 2019, to apply this experience and transition from the recommendatory nature of sell side research to actual investing and fund management.
I joined as a Senior Equity Analyst tracking the Consumption space, but after a year and a half in that role, I took up the challenge of active fund management. In addition to the role of Fund Manager, I also oversee the research function as the Head of Research. Which funds are you currently managing?
Currently, I manage four schemes at ITI AMC. The largest being the ITI Mid Cap Fund, which had a corpus of Rs11.2 bn as of the previous month end. This scheme aims to invest in mid cap names that offer earnings visibility and growth potential.
I also manage the most recent offering from our house, which is the ITI Bharat Consumption Fund, with an AUM of Rs 1.8 bn. This scheme aims to invest in a mix of established, scalable, and emerging companies and offer diversification with the consumption theme.
The third scheme is the ITI Pharma and Healthcare Fund, which has an AUM of Rs 2.2 bn and aims to participate in India's Healthcare sector growth story.
I also manage the ITI Value Fund, which has an AUM of Rs 3bn. This fund focuses on bottom-up stock selection with emphasis on price value gap, and also aims to invest in companies and sectors that are facing headwinds or transitional pains, which can get duly resolved over a period of time. Read More Positioning points to further S&P 500 upside - Citi What is your investment philosophy, and how will you describe your investment strategy?
The primary investment philosophy is Growth at Reasonable Prices or GARP for the first three schemes mentioned above. GARP ensures that companies with the highest potential to consistently contribute to India's growth story are part of the portfolio, while ensuring, at the same time, that we are not surpassing or exceeding the valuation that any company deserves within reasonable limits. The growth angle from GARP philosophy is, of course, diluted in favour of the value or contra approach for the Value fund. What gives you the kick while managing other people's money?
As an investment professional, it is a desire for knowledge, fresh insights, and finding investment opportunities that can generate satisfactory returns on investments over a period of time, which are driving factors. Managing investor money is a responsibility that we take very seriously at ITI AMC, and we strive to ensure that we have in-built risk management measures such as diversification of holdings. The primary objective is to ensure that, over the medium to long term, investors have a good experience with respect to the trust that they have showered upon us.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sunday that tariffs introduced in April will be enforced starting August 1 for countries that haven't finalized an agreement with the Trump administration. While Bessent dismissed the notion that August 1 represents a fresh deadline, he acknowledged that the new date could allow trading partners additional time to renegotiate tariff terms. Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick were asked in an interview with reporters Sunday to clarify when tariffs are set to go into effect. Lutnick responded, "Tariffs go into effect Aug. 1. But the president is setting the rates, and the deals, right now." Trump assented with the statement. Earlier in the day, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in an interview with CNN's "State of the Union" that tariffs announced back in April will go into effect on Aug. 1 for those countries that have yet to reach an agreement with the U.S. He said duties will "boomerang" back to April 2 levels if there is no progress. — Sarah Min

Stock futures fall after Trump says tariffs to go into effect Aug. 1, not July 9: Live updates

Traders work at the New York Stock Exchange on July 2, 2025. NYSE U.S. stock futures fell on Sunday after President Donald Trump confirmed that tariffs are set to go into effect Aug. 1, not July 9. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slid by 110 points, or 0.3%. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures dipped 0.3% and 0.3%, respectively. Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick were asked to clarify when tariffs are set to go into effect. In response, Lutnick said, "Tariffs go into effect Aug. 1. But the president is setting the rates, and the deals, right now," a statement to which Trump assented. Investors had been expecting tariff rates to go into effect this week. Trump's initial 90-day reprieve on the April "reciprocal" tariffs for most U.S. trading partners was set to end Tuesday. Meanwhile, the deadline for the U.S. to reach an agreement with the European Union before EU goods are hit with duties of up to 50% was on Wednesday. Wall Street is coming off a winning week, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite closing at all-time highs Friday in part because of confidence the Trump administration will not implement the most severe tariffs it announced back in April. In recent days, the White House had called the July trade deadlines "not critical." "Ultimately, trade negotiations usually take a long time to negotiate; free trade arrangements the US negotiated have taken an average of 3 years," Rajeev Sibal, senior global economist at Morgan Stanley, wrote last week. "While the negotiations that are currently taking place are likely to be narrower than a full fledged free trade agreement, the historical precedent remains informative." Investors worry that an equity market at all-time highs could get more choppy as trade updates come out of the White House, especially if the negotiations result in higher tariffs than is consensus. But others remain confident the stock market rally can continue, betting that companies in the upcoming earnings season will be able to clear low expectations if they demonstrate an ability to navigate tariffs. "I agree with anybody who says that, 'Look, we've reshaped some of the economic flows around tariffs,' but that's an upside story because if it plays out better, that's an earnings surprise," Tom Lee, head of research at Fundstrat Global Advisors, told CNBC's "Closing Bell" on Thursday. He added: "This is the most hated V-shaped rally." Thus far, the U.S. has reached a deal with just a few countries. In May, the U.S. came to an agreement with the United Kingdom to keep a 10% rate. Last week, it struck a deal with Vietnam, reducing levies on many goods to 20% from 46%. — CNBC's Erin Doherty contributed to this report.
