Dortmund's Kovac doesn't share Chelsea coach criticism on CWC
Atlanta, Georgia
Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovac does not share the sharp criticism by Chelsea helmsman Enzo Maresca on some aspects of the Club World Cup.
'You can't do anything about the weather. We have climate change. It affects all of us. We all have to deal with it,' Kovac said ahead of Tuesday night's last 16 match against Mexican side Monterrey.
Maresca had questioned whether the United States were the right host of the tournament, and next year's World Cup, after Chelsea's last 16 match with Benfica was stopped for two hours due to a storm warning.
Several other matches have seen similar interruptions, and others were played in extreme heat.
Kovac voiced understanding about the frustration over the delays but said that safety comes first.
The coach also said he considers the tournament 'great' and spoke of big enthusiasm especially among the smaller non-European teams.
However, he named too high ticket prices as one reason for many empty seats at the event, with Dortmund's last group match against Ulsan HD attended by just around 8,000 fans.
Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl struck a similar note in an interview with Germany's Süddeutsche Zeitung as he criticised ticket prices as well as mid-day and early afternoon kick-off times.
'If matches are played at noon or 3pm you have to get the people so excited that they leave their workplace. They have to take time off.
You can encourage that with a sensible ticket pricing policy,' Kehl said.
In team news, Kovac said that Dortmund will be without Carney Chukwuemeka due to illness against Monterrey, while Julian Brandt does not require surgery on a wrist fracture.

Qatari referee Marri on VAR duty in Chelsea vs Palmeiras clash
WASHINGTON: The Referees Committee of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has announced the selection of Qatari referee Khamis Al Marri as part of the officiating team for the match between Chelsea (England) and Palmeiras (Brazil), which will take place on Saturday, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The match is part of the quarterfinal stage of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, currently being hosted by the United States. Al Marri will serve as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the match, which will be officiated on the field by Australian referee Alireza Faghani. This will be Al Marri's third appearance as a video referee in the tournament so far. He previously worked alongside fellow Qatari referees Salman Falahi, Ramzan Al Nuaimi, and Majid Al Shammari in the Benfica (Portugal) vs. Auckland City (New Zealand) match, as well as the Los Angeles FC (USA) vs Flamengo (Brazil) match during the group stage, highlighting the success and strong presence of Qatari officiating in major international tournaments. The teams that have qualified for the quarterfinals of the 2025 Club World Cup are: Al Hilal (Saudi Arabia), Real Madrid (Spain), Paris Saint-Germain (France), Chelsea (England), Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund (Germany), Palmeiras and Fluminense (Brazil). The current edition of the Club World Cup is the first to feature 32 teams, divided into 8 groups, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the Round of 16. The knockout rounds are played in a single-elimination format, culminating in the final match scheduled for July 13 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Chelsea beat Palmerias to set up Fluminense Club World Cup semi
A late own goal off Palmeiras defender Agustin Giay lifted Chelsea to a 2-1 victory in Philadelphia, sending the Premier League side into the Club World Cup semifinals. A shot by Chelsea's Malo Gusto from the right side deflected off Palmeiras' Richard Rios and Giay. Goalkeeper Weverton was unable to control the caroming ball before it went into the net. Chelsea will play Fluminense on Tuesday in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Brazilian side defeated Al Hilal 2-1 earlier on Friday. Cole Palmer scored his first of the tournament in the 16th minute for Chelsea before Estevao, who will join Chelsea after the tournament, tied it in the 53rd minute. Palmer had been criticised by the Chelsea fans for his lack of production despite leading the team in shots on goal during the tournament. He proved his worth on the goal, taking a pass from Trevoh Chalobah and dribbling from just outside the box to 15 yards out before scoring with a left-footed strike. 'I've been working on it the shot in training. I just saw the space and went there,' Palmer told DAZN after the match. 'The manager just said to keep calm and do lots of passes, and we should be all right.' Chelsea fans didn't know whether to cheer or cry, however, when Estevao tied it with a brilliant, tight-angle shot for the equaliser. He made a verbal agreement with Chelsea in May 2024 but was not permitted to move to England until he turned 18 on April 24, delaying his transfer to the current window. The clubs arranged that he would remain with Palmeiras until their tournament run ended. 'You can see he [Estevao] is a top player, so we are excited for him [to join Chelsea after the tournament],' Palmer said of his soon-to-be teammate. Joao Pedro made his Chelsea debut in the 54th minute, two days after his signing from Brighton & Hove Albion of the Premier League was confirmed. The Brazilian had 10 goals and six assists for Brighton last season. Real Madrid face Borussia Dortmund, while Paris-Saint Germain take on Bayern Munich in the other quarterfinals on Saturday.
