
The Lionesses have slain an old England
On an overcast Tuesday afternoon (July 29), as 65,000 people lined the Mall to Buckingham Palace in celebration of the Lionesses Euro triumph, one thing became clear: this was not like the football gatherings of old. Gone were the crushed beer cans, roadside urination and coked-up Charlies; instead there were prams, cowgirl hats decorated with the St George's Cross, and women of all ages. There were plenty of boys and men, too: the elders who had learned to appreciate the women's game, and the young'uns native to its joys.
It is a different type of game. But the joyless, systemic reasons as to why the professional women's game isn't as advanced as the men's did not bother anyone on the Mall. If there is one uncontestable truth about football, it is that there is no uniform way of experiencing, playing or enjoying it. The beautiful game would not be so beautiful if everything was the same. It survives by flexing with different contexts and audiences, grounded by the game's fundamentals. It thrives on difference – as the tempo of the Premier League differs from the National League; so does the European version of the game from the South American; as there is a complete 180-degree vibe shift between something like the Euros, compared to the Africa Cup of Nations. The women's game is just another variation.
The modern personality of the women's game (which only became fully professionalised in 2018) can be seen off the field, too. Unsurprisingly, a game led by a group of people who were officially excluded from playing football for 50 years (by the FA), has a keen interest in inclusivity. That includes a wide embrace of queerness, race and culture. This was exemplified on the Mall by the appearance of the Nigerian afrobeats superstar Burna Boy, who performed alongside his die-hard fan, the England head coach Sarina Wiegman. And though this is a cleaner, family-friendly packaging of the game, there is still some bite. The exuberant Arsenal winger, Chloe Kelly, is that personified: still riding high after scoring the winning penalty for England (with a kick of the ball that clocked in at a thunderous 110 km/h), she told those gathered on the streets how 'so f*cking special' the Euros triumph is.
The Mall was chosen as a royal setting for the queens of European football, but the vibrant and inclusive Englishness that the women's national team represents contrasted oddly with the palace that loomed over them – a greying, absent relic, more an uninvited uncle than a generous host. The patriotism represented by Buckingham Palace now looks dated against the national pride envisioned by Gareth Southgate and displayed by both the women's and men's national teams.
Through it, in a footballing context at least, a malleable and de-toxified Englishness – one sensitivity attuned to race, class and cultural struggles – has emerged. After her winning penalty in the final, Kelly declared: 'I'm so proud to be English', and this was uncontroversial. Had she been a male player during our national team's dark period in the 1970s and 1980s, when hooliganism and racism was rife, these words would have had very different connotations.
This new, more malleable form of Englishness is not the 'Cool Britannia' of the Euro '96 tournament, a cultural celebration which was co-opted by politicians, most notably Tony Blair. The power and pervasiveness of sport to connect otherwise disparate groups of people hasn't waned, but there is less room in this movement for Royals in hospitality boxes and celebratory Downing Street visits. Keir Starmer would have been an awkward host for the Lionesses' reception at No 10 on Monday (July 28), despite being a football fan (he was in Scotland meeting Donald Trump). Angela Rayner – who, like many of the women's team, wears her working-class roots proudly – was clearly a more natural fit.
On the Mall, there was no escaping this new and different patriotism. The Lionesses have taken the tactical foundations of Southgateism and aligned it with their own, proud, goals. The cameras focused on the celebrating team and their fans, cropping out the old symbols of national identity in the background. The road to Buckingham Palace served a practical purpose, in that no other street could accommodate 65,000 people. And yet it felt as if this crowd could have congregated somewhere else – a park, a festival, somewhere with less historical baggage – and that this might have been more appropriate to the England they chose to celebrate.

A comedian and radio host has spent the week travelling Yorkshire in the run-up to the 50th annual Yorkshire 1 August celebration of "God's own county" was set up by the Yorkshire Ridings Society in 1975 in response to the creation of new local government administrative areas the previous to the society's website, the creation of Yorkshire Day, was "to reaffirm Yorkshire's true boundaries".Toby Foster, who presents the afternoon show for BBC Radio Leeds, BBC Radio Sheffield and BBC Radio York, travelled Yorkshire on public transport for a Race Across the World-style challenge. All the people we've met have gone out of their way to help us," he said."There's been a lot of pride in where people live, a pride that's coming back, certainly in Bradford you can feel that."The trip, dubbed Race Towards Yorkshire Day, started at Bradford's National Science and Media Museum with other locations revealed throughout the week. Challenges included Toby having a tarantula on his face and producer Chelsey Ward riding the Gyrosaur attraction at Gulliver's Valley Theme Park in locations visited included Crystal Peaks shopping centre in Sheffield, Park Dean Resort at Cayton Bay, near Scarborough, and Tropical World at Roundhay, Leeds. Zach Huntley, 29, lives in south Leeds and works for a craft brewery. He met the team during a stop in Roundhay Park. "I moved from down south and I feel very accepted and welcome," said Mr Huntley. "Yorkshire's about community and wildlife and nature." He plans to join the West Yorkshire Bat Society, which works to conserve the Kuunal, 31, lives near York and is an animal keeper at Tropical World. For her, being outdoors makes Yorkshire said: "Exploring, hiking, birdwatching, all of those things in the Yorkshire countryside. That's what's made it so special for me, out in the Yorkshire Dales and places like that." Jai Robinchalk, 24, lives in Leeds and works at The Great Yorkshire Shop at the city's Corn met Toby and Chelsey during their challenge to pick up a jar of rhubarb jam from Yorkshire's rhubarb triangle. "Everyone helps each other out, everyone's so nice and you can have a conversation with anyone if you want to, and that's what Yorkshire is," he said the incidental conversations the team had during their trips on public transport really stood out."I didn't realise what kind of relationship the bus drivers had with all the punters who get on," he said. "They know them all, they've got nicknames for them all, they have a laugh with them all."The Race Towards Yorkshire Day is due to finish with a Yorkshire Day Party in Kirkbymoorside in North Yorkshire later. Can you guess who the Queen liked to mock? Royal author claims monarch had 'extremely funny' sense of humour behind the stern look - and was a 'first-class mimic'
Despite the late Queen's public face appearing stoic and poised, she began to share more of her funny side towards the end of her 70-year reign. This is according to Ingrid Seward, one of the most respected royal biographers who has spent 40 years following The Firm. Seward, 77, wrote in her 2023 book, My Mother And I: 'The Queen's stern look, inherited from her grandmother Queen Mary, belies the wonderful sense of humour we got to see more and more as she got older. 'The Queen could be extremely funny, in a slightly mocking way. 'She was also a first-class mimic, particularly of politicians, but never to anyone's face. She could only laugh or state her opinions in private, and some of them were pretty forceful. 'She also liked hearing a bit of gossip, so her immediate staff saved all the chit-chat for her about what was going on in every corner of her various homes. 'She saw everything but turned a blind eye to small misdemeanours and and disasters. She was the same with her friends.' Perhaps one of the best-positioned people to comment on the Queen's sense of humour is royal biographer and podcaster Gyles Brandreth first met the Queen in 1968, when he was 20. Over the next 50 years he met her many times, both at public and at private events In an interview with Yours magazine he said: 'She once performed George Formby's When I'm Cleaning Windows for me, while strumming an imaginary ukulele! 'She was an incredible mimic and told me she'd been inspired by famous female impersonator Florence Desmond, who came to Windsor Castle to entertain the Royal family during the war. 'The Queen could do all kinds of regional accents.' Even the Queen's dressmaker, Angela Kelly, was reportedly was blown away by the Queen's ability to copy her scouse accent. Angela told The Sun: 'We have a lot of fun together. The Queen has a wicked sense of humor and is a great mimic. She can do all accents—including mine.' Brandreth wrote in Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait, that this instinctive and self‑deprecating wit was as important a part of the Queen's personality as the clothes she wore and the smile that lit up her face. Nothing could better demonstrate this than the age-old tale of when the Queen watched a video of herself and called out to her husband: 'Oh Philip, do look! I've got my Miss Piggy face on.' The Queen reportedly said, 'And guess who is going to have to change!', before disappearing upstairs and returning in a different dress. Seward added: 'It is a story she enjoyed telling all her life - with certain embellishments.' While the Queen could sometimes appear stern on duty, Sally Bedell Smith, author of Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch, revealed in 2021 that she was much livelier' in person, and made self-depreciating jokes showing she didn't take herself too seriously. Ingrid Seward even went as far to suggest that the Queen's sense of humour was the secret to her and Philip's long and happy marriage. 'I think the secret is they laugh together. I think the Queen is the comedian,' she said. ELIZABETH II'S BEST ROYAL GAGS TEA WITH PADDINGTON BEAR In the final months of her life, Her Majesty delighted audiences at the televised BBC's Platinum Party at the Palace after kicking off the festivities with an appearance alongside the fictional character Paddington Bear - in which they both enjoyed a chaotic cream tea at 'Buckingham Palace '. Paddington and the Queen were pictured sat opposite each other in ornate chair at a table, laid for afternoon tea, covered with a white linen cloth in an opulent room. Accident-prone Paddington was shown causing mayhem by accidentally depriving the understanding sovereign of another cup of tea and spraying cream from a chocolate éclair over a Palace Footman. The Queen's secret sketch was the result of months of planning, and saw the duffle-coat wearing bear show the monarch how he ensured he always had his favourite treat on him just in case, lifting up his red hat to reveal his snack. Her Majesty responded by revealing 'So do I' before opening her bag and declaring 'I keep mine in here' to show her very own ready-made supply of the bread and orange preserve staple. The bear from deepest darkest Peru congratulated the Queen on her reign of 70 years, saying: 'Happy Jubilee Ma'am. And thank you. For everything.' The modest Queen replied: 'That's very kind.' Filmed at Windsor Castle, the Queen spent around half a day filming the secretly-pre-recorded humorous two-and-a-half-minute sequence, according to The Telegraph, and the comic sketch was a surprise even to some of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren watching the scenes. ELIZABETH 007 The Queen showed the world she was still full of surprises in 2012 when she agreed to take part in a comedy stint to open the London Olympics. A clip played during the ceremony showed the Queen, then 86-years-old, being picked up at Buckingham Palace by Daniel Craig, playing James Bond, and then being 'parachuted' in the stadium for the opening ceremony. The recorded sequence opened at Buckingham Palace, where a tuxedo-wearing Craig as 007 was presented to the Queen by her personal footman as she was writing a letter and training her corgis Monty, Willow and Holly to roll over. After greeting the fictitious spy with an 'Evening, Mr Bond,' the Queen, wearing a glitzy pink dress, was escorted out of the Palace onto a helicopter by Craig. At the time, Danny Boyle, who directed the short clip, said: 'The Queen made herself more accessible than ever before.' It was her first ever film role, and it was a comedy hit, proving the elderly Monarch had a great sense of humour. To this day, the clip, which is available on Youtube, has been watched more than 51 million times across the globe. QUEEN OF ONE-LINERS At the 2021 G7 Summit in Cornwall, the 95-year-old was dancing circles around World leaders, showcasing her wit and her good humour. As she posed for pictures with the likes of Boris Johnson, US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Monarch was heard saying: 'Are you supposed to be looking as if you're enjoying yourselves?' which provoked laughter around her. It was her first major public event together since the funeral of Prince Philip, the queen's husband of more than seven decades, which made the joke even more poignant. 'THIS IS MORE UNUSUAL' Also during the Cornwall G7, the Queen showed she had lost nothing of her panache when cutting a cake with a ceremonial sword with her daughter-in-law the Duchess of Cornwall and her grandson Prince William's wife Kate Middleton. She had been presented with a giant cake in Cornwall to celebrate her official birthday and was given the sword to cut it. When a helpful aid told her 'there is a knife if you want it,' the Queen replied: 'I know there is, but this is more unusual,' leaving her audience in stitches.
