Fine teams for 'long shot' protests, says Wolff
SPIELBERG - Formula One teams should be fined if they fail in 'long shot' protests against rivals, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said on Friday.
The Austrian told reporters at his home grand prix that the governing FIA was already looking into the possibility of such a measure.
Rivals Red Bull have protested twice in the space of five races, and without success, against Mercedes driver George Russell.
In Canada two weeks ago, where Russell won and Verstappen finished second, the result of the race was not confirmed until more than five hours after the chequered flag due to the enquiry.
One of the protests in Montreal, alleging a safety car infringement, was withdrawn while the other claimed Russell had been 'unsportsmanlike' in his driving.
"I think it's absolutely legitimate to protest. We are fighting for race wins and championships. And if you have the opinion that what you've seen is not right, then you should protest," said Wolff.
"But some of these actions are just really not real.
"There are things that, from my perspective, are legit to protest and others that are just a little bit of a too long shot."
Wolff said nobody was a fan of higher fines, and Formula One needed to be mindful of the real world and not be seen as over the top.
"But in that (Canadian GP) instance, absolutely put in a fine, and I think the president of the FIA is working on that. Put in a fine that, at least if you lose it, is a little bit of an embarrassment that you lost so much money, and you're going to think twice whether you do it," he added.
"I think this is along the lines the FIA are thinking."
Sauber team principal Jonathan Wheatley, who was previously at Red Bull, said it was important for teams to have the right to protest and making it prohibitive would likely result in more problems. REUTERS

Both Konstas and Cameron Green, at number three, struggled but the Australians were set up for victory by the batting performances of Travis Head, Beau Webster and Alex Carey. The West Indies were left to chase a target of 301 to win but, with Josh Hazlewood producing a bowling masterclass to claim five wickets for 43 runs, the hosts were dismissed for 141 as the match ended with two days remaining. "The wicket was playing a lot of tricks," said Cummins. "I thought we might make decent in-roads, but I didn't think we'd get 10. Always nice to get a couple of days off. "I thought those three (Head, Webster and Carey) were brilliant. They kept the scoreboard ticking over. They took really good options and they were always looking to score. That was the difference. "We turned up today thinking that we wouldn't get a big lead, it was 50-50 really and those guys took the game away from West Indies. I thought all three of those were really impressive." PHOTO: REUTERS Cooper Flagg is ready to do whatever the Mavs ask DALLAS – Cooper Flagg has enormous shoes to fill, trying to carry the mantle of the likes of Dirk Nowitzki and Luka Doncic in Dallas, but the NBA draft's No. 1 pick is willing to do whatever is asked of him to help the Mavericks continue their recent success. And head coach Jason Kidd, who was the No. 2 pick by Dallas in the 1994 NBA Draft, is ready to challenge the Duke alum. 'I think it's a versatile position, doing a lot of different things,' Flagg said of his expectations on the court at his introductory press conference in Dallas on June 27. 'I think with the team, looking at the roster, we can play a really good brand of position-less basketball, with a lot of guys that can do a lot of different things. So I think that'll be one of the biggest strengths, and trying to play to that and just doing whatever I can to help the team win.' Kidd is also looking forward to the versatility that Flagg brings. 'I don't look at the position. I want to put him at the point guard,' he said. The former Dutch international striker, who also played at Feyenoord and Fenerbahce, was fired last week by Beerschot of Belgium after they finished bottom of the standings and were relegated. Kuyt had won the second-division title and promotion with them the previous season. His task will now be to turn Dordrecht into promotion candidates. They have had a single season in the top flight of Dutch football over the last 30 years. "I am looking forward to a new adventure at FC Dordrecht with great pleasure," the 44-year-old Kuyt said in a statement issued by the club. "I have seen that FC Dordrecht has become a stable club in recent years, a team that plays good and attacking football, but also develops many young talents.
