High CPO prices to lift IOI Corp earnings

The Star2 days ago
RHB Research said the company's outlook remains positive as upstream earnings will continue to do well on strong CPO prices.
PETALING JAYA: IOI Corp Bhd is expected to deliver stronger earnings in the coming financial years as it benefits from elevated crude palm oil (CPO) prices while pursuing fresh income streams through new ventures as well as mergers and acquisitions.
The group is targeting fresh fruit bunch (FFB) output growth and cost containment measures that could support margins going forward.
According to RHB Research, which met with IOI Corp's management recently, the company's outlook remains positive as upstream earnings will continue to do well on strong CPO prices.
This is further supported by the group's embarking on new ventures to diversify its income streams.
The research house said the group's valuation was still appealing, trading at 17.5 times its forecast price-earnings ratio for 2026, at the lower end of the 17 to 22 times range of peers.
On production, it noted that IOI Corp achieved FFB growth of 1.3% year-on-year (y-o-y) in the financial year ended June 30, 2025 (FY25) – below its initial 3% target.
'While output saw a mini peak in April, IOI Corp expects production to pick up in July, with a bigger peak in the August to September period,' it said.
For FY26, the group was targeting FFB output growth of 3% to 5% on the back of better weather conditions in line with RHB Research's 4% forecast.
The company was also expected to keep unit costs in check.
'IOI Corp expects FY25 costs to come in at around RM2,000 to RM2,100 per tonne,' RHB Research said, adding that it had already secured fertiliser requirements for the first half of FY26 at flat prices y-o-y.
However, a 2% to 3% rise in costs could result from minimum wage adjustments and Employees Provident Fund contribution requirements.
On regulatory risks, RHB Research said IOI Corp would face minimal impact from the government's expanded sales and service tax (SST) and US tariffs.
The group had obtained SST exemptions for its oleochemicals operations and over 90% of its trading volumes comprised CPO and palm olein, which were not subjected to the tax.
'There is no significant impact as 90% of Malaysian CPO production is exported to the European Union as certified products, with less than 2% exported to the United States,' it added.
Looking ahead, IOI Corp was actively seeking brownfield upstream land bank in Malaysia and Indonesia and opportunities in specialty oleochemicals for the pharmaceutical and personal care sectors.
It also expressed optimism over its 33% stake in a pulp and paper joint venture with Nextgreen Global Bhd to turn oil palm empty fruit bunches into renewable products.
'The first phase of the plant (150,000 tonnes) should be operational by 2028, with potential earnings before interest and tax (ebit) contribution of RM30mil to RM50mil,' RHB Research said.
The group's diversification efforts extended to coconut plantations, where 3,500ha had already been planted, targeting 4,600ha in total.
This business could bring in RM60mil to RM70mil in ebit at full maturity.
RHB Research reiterated its 'buy' call on IOI Corp, maintaining a sum-of-parts-based target price of RM4.30 with a 2% environmental, social and governance premium.

Malaysia-Indonesia Ambalat discussions a sign of friendship, says Anwar

KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia's discussions with Indonesia on the Ambalat dispute in the Sulawesi Sea are a sign of good friendship, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said that the dispute does not imply that Malaysia is surrendering anything as the discussions involve Indonesia, and are therefore aimed at protecting and preserving the good relationship between the countries. ALSO READ: Wisma Putra: Ambalat reference inaccurate, ND6, ND7 blocks part of Malaysian sovereign territory "We want to solve issues amicably," he said and added that the Federal Government would not allow any part of Sabah or the country to be claimed by anyone. "We will protect every inch of Sabah," Anwar said The Ambalat area is a long-disputed maritime zone rich in oil and gas resources. Anwar and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto recently issued a joint statement pledging to explore a proposed joint development in the Sulawesi Sea in a peaceful and mutually beneficial manner; this joint development includes the Ambalat block. A Wisma Putra statement explained that the joint statement marks a preliminary effort by both governments to work towards the best solution. The Ambalat block spans some 15,000sq km off the coast of Sabah snf is believed to contain significant crude oil reserves. In 2004, PETRONAS awarded a concession to Shell to explore the area, sparking protests from Indonesia, which had granted similar rights to Italian energy company Eni. In 2009, Indonesia protested Malaysia's military presence in the area, and the following year, Indonesian navy vessels purportedly came close to opening fire on a Malaysian navy patrol ship for ignoring orders to leave.

From struggle to legacy: Felda veteran recalls life on RM2.90

KUALA LUMPUR: The legacy of Felda's earliest settlers continues to resonate through the memories of its pioneering figures—among them, 84-year-old Md Nen Kasim. Though now in declining health, Md Nen remains mentally sharp, vividly recalling the hardship, resilience, and unity that marked the formative years of Felda. A former member of the Felda board of directors, Md Nen was one of its earliest settlers and a pivotal figure in shaping the agency's development. On July 7, 1977, he was awarded the Semai Felda Gold Medal, the highest honour in recognition of his contributions to the movement. In the late 1970s, Md Nen was also part of a historic delegation to England and the Netherlands with four other board members, Datuk Zainal Hasan, Mahmud Sarjono, Walid Makrifat, and Yeop Mahidin Mohd Sharif. The mission, led by the late Yeop Mahidin, aimed to defend Malaysia's palm oil industry amid aggressive campaigns favouring soybean oil in Europe. That pivotal effort helped strengthen global trust in Malaysian palm oil, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of the national economy. Md Nen is now the last surviving member of that delegation. "I am very proud to have been chosen to go to Europe. We defended palm oil on foreign soil. Today, it has become the backbone of the nation's economy," he told Mingguan Malaysia. Although he humbly describes his role as modest, Md Nen believes the struggles of early Felda settlers must never be forgotten, reminding Malaysians that Felda's success came through perseverance, sacrifice, and unity. "Look at how we remember the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee – we only truly appreciated him after he was gone. Don't let that be the fate of Felda's pioneers." Among his fondest memories was receiving the Semai Felda Gold Medal, followed by another gold medal in 1979, both symbols of his enduring service and recognition of the collective struggle of Felda settlers. Md Nen emphasises that Felda was never just a rural development project, but rather a legacy of Malay empowerment, one that should be honoured by every generation benefiting from its land schemes. "I still keep my Buku 555," he shared, referring to the small accounting notebook settlers used. "Back then, wages were only RM2.90 a day — but with that, we bought rice, sardines, and milk.

MAG's Boeing Jet Purchase Not Linked To Tariff Talks, Minister Clarifies

The recent aircraft purchase by Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) from Boeing was a long-planned business decision, not a concession linked to tariff negotiations with the US, the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz clarified. He explained that the purchase was made using MAG's own funds and is not in any way related to the tariff discussions with the US government. 'This is a commercial decision made in line with MAG's fleet renewal strategy, not one driven by diplomatic pressure or public spending,' he said in a Facebook posting on Aug 2. The minister also noted that the Boeing deal had been announced as early as March 2025, well before the US imposed any new tariff on Malaysian exports. 'At the time of the announcement, there was no indication from the US about imposing new tariffs. To suggest the aircraft order was a reaction to tariffs is simply not accurate,' he said. However, Tengku Zafrul acknowledged that Malaysia had strategically highlighted large-scale purchases from American companies, including MAG's aircraft deal, during negotiations to demonstrate the country's role as a significant trade partner to the US. 'By showing that Malaysia also imports high-value products from the US, we helped shift the narrative away from a one-sided trade surplus. 'This helped convince US authorities to revise the tariff rate downward from 25% to 19%,' he explained. He described the move as a 'smart and calculated' approach that protected both corporate interests and national economic priorities. 'The MAG-Boeing deal was never about appeasement. It was about demonstrating that Malaysia is a responsible and reciprocal trading partner while staying true to the commercial viability of every decision,' Tengku Zafrul said.
