Auburn becomes longest consecutive AP Poll No. 1 since 2022

Yahoo24-02-2025
On Monday, Auburn basketball added another infinity stone to what has become a historically dominant gauntlet of accomplishments this season. Bruce Pearl's Tigers were once again tabbed the No. 1 team in the nation by AP voters, making it seven weeks in a row Auburn has received the top nod from the contingent of critics.
The seven-week reign as the country's top program is the longest run in over three full calendar years. Gonzaga, who earned the preseason No. 1 ranking in the 2020-2021 season, grasped onto the top ranking for 21 straight weeks before finally giving it up in Week 4 of the 2021-2022 campaign. Before Monday's poll, Connecticut (2024), was the only other program to hold the AP No. 1 for at least six weeks since the 2015 season, when Kentucky held the top ranking for that entire campaign.
Auburn also received every first place vote in the Week 17 AP Poll after an undefeated week. This is the fourth time the Tigers have been at the peak of every voters paper, and the first since Week 14. Florida, who received the only other first-place vote a week ago, slid down one spot in the top 25, to No. 3, in favor of Duke.
Other than the Gators and Auburn, Tennessee (No. 5) and Alabama (No. 6) make up the remaining SEC programs ranked in the top 10 of the poll. Texas A&M (No. 12) fell out of the top 10 after a pair of losses to Mississippi State and Tennessee, marking just the second time since Week 5 the SEC hasn't represented at least 50% of the top 10 teams in college basketball. Kentucky (No. 17) spent most of the early season ranked in the top third of the AP Poll before the Aggies planted themselves among the nation's top programs.
Missouri (No. 14), who very well could have won the SEC if the season was a month longer, continued its surge up the polls this week to round out conference programs ranked in the top 15, while Mississippi State continued its descent down the rankings, checking in at No. 24. Ole Miss (28) and Vanderbilt (2) were the only other SEC teams to receive votes. Old friend Yale received a single vote as well. Kansas, who had been ranked in the AP Poll for 80 consecutive weeks, only received 25 votes in Week 17.
Auburn will need to continue playing extraordinary basketball over the final stretch of the season if it hopes to continue the streak of AP No. 1. After a matchup with Ole Miss at Neville Arena early this week, the Tigers travel to Rupp Arena to take on No. 17 Kentucky on Saturday before taking a pit stop in College Station to take on the Aggies next Tuesday. The regular season then wraps up with part two of the 'Iron Bowl of Basketball' on March 8.

Phil Steele puts Auburn in elite company with preseason D-Line ranking

Anchored by Keldric Faulk, Auburn's defensive line will be one of the nation's best units, says Phil Steele. Auburn football is poised to have a great offense this season. However, its defense is shaping up to make noise as well during the 2025 season. One unit in particular is catching the eye of a premier name in college football, Phil Steele. Steele, who has published a preseason magazine for over 30 years, included Auburn among his top 25 defensive line units ahead of the 2025 season, sliding the Tigers in at No. 24 ahead of No. 25 Florida State. This year's unit will feature a trio of players who gained valuable playing experience last season. Keldric Faulk and Bobby Jamison-Travis return to anchor the unit while Malik Blocton slides in as a sophomore after playing 305 snaps last season and making two starts. The unit will be deep with reserves as transfers James Ash, Dallas Walker, and Jay Hardy join the depth chart. Faulk and Jamison-Travis are the veterans of the group and will be tasked with leading the young players as they develop into starters themselves later in their careers. Faulk has already noticed quick development in the young linemen, especially in one true freshman. "They are active at all times. When Darrion (Smith) first came in, he was so timid, and he was so impatient to play blocks or even the pass rush. He was laid off, getting active in pass rush," Faulk said. "But now, those guys got so comfortable playing our defense that they make decisions very easy for themselves, and they slow the game down. So they are playing faster and making better decisions." Check out what all Faulk, as well as head coach Hugh Freeze and quarterback Jackson Arnold, had to say during Saturday's press conference. Phillies closer Jhoan Duran sets record in second team appearance

It took less than a week for Jhoan Duran to etch his name into the Phillies' record books. The flamethrowing closer has made just two appearances for Philadelphia since he was dealt from the Twins ahead of last week's trade deadline, but he's already unleashed the fastest pitch in Citizens Bank Park history. The record-setting toss was a 103.3 mph fastball, which Duran pitched to Tigers All-Star Riley Greene in the ninth inning of the Phillies' 2-0 win over Detroit Sunday night. The pitch was fouled off, but Duran struck out Greene to end the game on the following toss, a 102.5 mph heater that set a record as the Phillies' fastest game-ending strikeout since the pitch tracking era began in 2008, according to MLB's Sarah Langs. In the same at-bat against Greene, Duran also threw a 102.7 mph fastball. Phillies closer Jhoan Duran in Sunday's 2-0 win over the Tigers. Getty Images After the game, Phillies manager Rob Thomson deadpanned of the record-setting pitch to the Philadelphia Inquirer: 'That's pretty good.' Philadelphia acquired Duran last Wednesday in exchange for two of their top prospects, Mick Abel and Eduardo Tait. Widely considered one of the best closers in baseball, Duran has a 1.93 ERA with 54 strikeouts this season across 51 1/3 innings. He was also known for having one of the most electric bullpen entrances in baseball during his time in Minnesota, with fans turning their phone flashlights on en masse to welcome Duran to the field as Farruko's 'El Incomprendido' (mixed with Pitbull and Daddy Yankee's 'Hot') blared through the speakers. Phillies closer Jhoan Duran enters to a light show in Friday's 5-4 win over the Tigers. AP That entrance was immediately adopted by the Phillies, to the elation of fans. The Dominican Republic native broke into the majors with Minnesota in 2022, and has posted a sub-3.00 ERA in three of his four MLB seasons. He cannot claim the fastest pitch thrown in the big leagues this year, though – the Padres' Mason Miller owns that title after pitching a 104.1 mph fastball when with the Athletics.

Trevor Goosby makes Bruce Feldman's annual ‘Freaks List'

Fox and The Athletic reporter Bruce Feldman is known for his annual Freaks List. It's a collection of the craziest and wildest athletes in college football each season. This year, Trevor Goosby made it. [Sign up for Inside Texas TODAY and get the BEST Longhorns coverage!] Feldman talked about Texas' new starting left tackle in 2025. 'Once ranked as the 34th best offensive tackle prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, Goosby has proven to be a terrific evaluation. As a redshirt freshman last season, he started two games, one at left tackle and the other at right. PFF gave Goosby an 80.8 pass blocking grade for the season, which was higher than Cameron Williams, Texas' starter at right tackle, although the freshman had a much smaller sample size. At 6-7 1/3, 311 pounds, Goosby clocked a flying 10-yard sprint of 1.44 seconds, grading at an extremely high level in terms of his acceleration for an offensive lineman. His max speed of 20 mph this offseason was almost as impressive. He bench pressed 365 pounds and jumped the highest of any of the Longhorn O-linemen. His leaping ability and body control are also evident in this video of him doing a 360-dunk last spring.' Goosby has held it down at left tackle since Kelvin Banks left for the NFL. Big shoes to fill for the former three-year starter, but Goosby adds more size and athleticism to the position. He was also selected to the All-SEC Preseason Third Team two weeks ago. It runs in the family. His father, Michael Goosby, played in the NFL, and Trevor's little brother, , is a highly-rated basketball prospect for the Class of 2026. Our Ian Boyd discussed Goosby this offseason. 'Adapting to Goosby's strengths In the run game, it's not obvious much will need to change in the transition from Banks to Goosby. The new left tackle has the quickness for outside zone but also the strength and screening skill for inside zone or the power/gap run game. The inside zone game for a tackle is mostly about controlling the Edge or end across from them on their outside shoulder and ideally getting a little bit of displacement or control so they either try to fit one gap and get screened away from the back or even driven off the ball.'
