Ferrari Brings Back The Mid-Engine V-12 Supercar

Ferrari Brings Back The Mid-Engine V-12 Supercar

Motor 109-07-2025
Ferrari sparked controversy when it launched the
F80
with a small V-6, half the cylinder count of the LaFerrari before it. Some enthusiasts took issue with the fact that, while the front-engine 12Cilindri and even the Purosangue SUV rock V-12s, Maranello's range-topping Prancing Horse had to make do with a six-cylinder mill.
Nevertheless, the ultra-wealthy clientele snapped up all 799 cars anyway. But for those who believe there's no replacement for displacement, a pleasant surprise awaits, provided their pockets are deep enough. The V-12 is back behind the seats.

The
Daytona SP3
makes a surprising return, albeit as a one-off. The initial 599-unit run was sold out before the car's official 2021 debut. All 499 owners of the Monza SP1 and SP2 committed to buying the follow-up car from the Icona Series, and the remaining 100 vehicles were quickly claimed by other collectors. Now there's a 600
th
car, and it hasn't been sold yet.
RM Sotheby's will auction it next month during Monterey Car Week in California. All proceeds will go to The Ferrari Foundation, with the funds supporting educational projects. It's hard to say what the final hammer price will be, but we wouldn't be surprised if it surpasses the $2.2 million sticker of the original 599 cars.
It's not the first time Ferrari has extended production to support a worthy cause. An unplanned 500
th
LaFerrari fetched $7 million, five times its original price, to aid reconstruction efforts in central Italy following the devastating 2016 earthquakes. We also recall the
210
th
LaFerrari Aperta
selling for nearly $10 million, with proceeds benefiting the Save the Children charity.
As for the 600
th
Daytona SP3, it sports a two-tone exterior and a bold Ferrari logotype split into 'Ferr' and 'ari,' an unusual layout never used before. Inside, the seats are upholstered with material made from recycled tires, while the carbon fiber on the steering column and checkerboard-patterned dashboard is sourced from Formula 1. To distinguish it from the previous 599 cars,
Ferrari
has added a special plaque between the seats marking it as a one-off.
But the final Daytona SP3 is likely not the last mid-engine V-12. Ferrari has vowed to keep the naturally aspirated twelve-cylinder alive until the
very end of the ICE era
. With the Icona Series set to continue, at least one more V-12 behind the driver seems like a safe bet.

Lucid joins Tesla and GM with hands-free highway driving

Lucid Motors is about to make highway driving a lot more relaxing. The electric vehicle startup is rolling out a major upgrade to its driver-assistance technology, placing it squarely alongside Tesla and GM in the growing hands-free driving market. Starting July 30, Lucid Air owners who opted for the DreamDrive Pro package will have access to an over-the-air update unlocking two key features: The update launches first for the Lucid Air sedan, with the upcoming Gravity SUV getting these features later this year. DreamDrive Pro combines advanced hardware and intelligent software to power Lucid's driver-assistance system. It uses 32 integrated sensors, including LiDAR, radar, visible-light and surround-view cameras and ultrasonic sensors. This setup delivers precise environmental awareness for everything from highway cruising to close-range maneuvers. Because the platform is software-defined, Lucid can roll out new features like hands-free highway driving and automated lane changes through over-the-air updates. Drivers receive continuous improvements without needing hardware upgrades or service appointments. These updates are just the beginning. Lucid is investing heavily in advanced driver-assistance and automation, with a clear focus on safety, comfort and long-term innovation. Lucid now joins the ranks of top hands-free driving systems. Tesla's Full Self-Driving and GM's Super Cruise both offer hands-free driving on highways, though they differ in how they monitor driver attention and what roads they support. Ford's BlueCruise is another major option, available on a growing number of mapped highways. Mercedes-Benz Drive Pilot goes a step further by letting drivers take their eyes off the road in certain traffic conditions, though it's only available in limited markets for now. If you're driving a car with advanced driver-assistance features, such as the Lucid Air or similar models, you're likely noticing real changes in your daily routine. With hands-off driving now available on select highways, those stressful commutes can feel a little easier. Sitting in stop-and-go traffic doesn't have to be such a chore anymore. Long road trips? Suddenly, they're much more comfortable. Many automakers, not just Lucid, are pushing out updates directly to your car, so you can access new tools without ever stepping into a service center. Safety is at the forefront with these new systems. As you drive, a network of sensors and smart software helps keep your lane changes smooth, your following distances steady and your ride free from abrupt surprises. These advances can give you peace of mind, but it's essential to remember that these systems don't drive for you. You still need to stay alert and keep your hands ready. With more cars using similar technology each year, the roads themselves are changing. There's hope that fewer accidents caused by distraction or delayed reactions will benefit not just tech-savvy drivers, but everyone out there. While these models, like the Lucid Air, showcase what's possible, the real transformation comes as driver-assistance features become the new normal in cars everywhere. Lucid's new hands-free driving update puts it in direct competition with Tesla, GM, and other automakers working to change the way we drive. With DreamDrive Pro, Lucid shows that combining advanced hardware, in-house software, and frequent updates can deliver real capability. As more companies roll out similar systems, drivers are getting more options, and the convenience once reserved for luxury models is becoming more accessible. Fighting Nature's Fury With AI-Powered IoT Sensors

ALTADENA, CALIFORNIA - JANUARY 8: Firefighters battle the Eaton Fire on January 8, 2025 in Altadena, ... More California. (Photo by) Across the world, disturbing wildfire and flood trends are emerging. Driven by hotter and drier conditions, wildfires are burning longer, spreading faster, and impacting larger areas. Extreme flooding, and in particular, flash floods that were once rare, have become routine, with heavy rainfall destroying old infrastructure and overwhelming outdated emergency systems. According to NASA, over 20 percent more people now live in high-risk, flood prone areas than in 2000. Without new, innovative tools and approaches, more communities can expect disastrous consequences. Fortunately, the increasing availability of smart, networked sensors—Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices--are showing surprisingly good results in both anticipating and responding to wildfires and floods. To get ahead of the next crisis, community leaders must consider expediting their evaluation and investment in the latest, AI-driven solutions. Intelligent Sensors Are Saving Lives In February 2025, a cyclone headed towards Australia's western coast. Many roads were blocked by public safety personnel in anticipation of floods. One driver, ignoring the barricades on a blocked road, continued ahead. The Oakover river was rising quickly and flooding was already occurring. The driver's tractor trailer was overcome by the raging waters and was dragged into the river. In the area, sensors were present and monitoring the rising waters, sending a stream of information back to a monitoring station. Fortunately, the sensors captured the distressed driver and vehicle, and an emergency request was transmitted. A helicopter was dispatched, and the driver was saved. The Business Case For Smart Environmental Monitoring Life-saving stories like these are at the heart of why Cameron McKenna, CEO and founder of Attentis, got into the business of designing and manufacturing intelligent environmental monitoring sensors. Cameron McKenna, CEO and founder of Attentis Around 15 years ago, McKenna observed that while more traditional technology such as cameras and satellites were being regularly utilized in some high-risk areas to monitor conditions, detailed ground-based intelligence was scarce for those tasked with responding to wildfires and floods. His thesis was that a network of sensors designed to capture rich and relevant micro-climate data could be used to provide live information that would empower responders to make the best timely decisions during a crisis. Enlightened with this insight, McKenna's mission was born. Today, deploying McKenna's sensor networks have collapsed the battle time to contain and resolve a fire or flood crisis in some cases from weeks to days. His thesis has been consistently validated, much to his satisfaction. In addition, the benefits of intelligent sensors aren't limited to reacting to an already underway natural disaster. Intuitively, if a crisis can be mitigated before it even begins then that's the best-case scenario. The latest AI-driven sensor solutions aim to do just that. Today, these types of intelligent monitoring sensors are beginning to be deployed across the world. For McKenna, they've achieved significant penetration in the Australian market and some deployments in New Zealand. They plan to expand into the US next. An intelligent IoT sensor gathering and transmitting live data in a forest setting The Technology Behind Intelligent Sensors McKenna's company designs and builds intelligent integrated IoT devices that come in a variety of configurations and are loaded with an extensive array of sensors. They monitor live environmental conditions including temperature, rainfall, noise, vibration, air quality, wind speed, audio, smoke detection, and movement. Fundamentally a data network, these devices make timely data available to their primary owner, and can, by permission, offer an API to a large number of stakeholders. The Attentis intelligent IoT device that can be configured with an array of sensors Rather than separate devices and networks that each addresses fire and flood risks, the solution combines both, a limitation of older systems that McKenna saw fit to solve. The devices, primarily procured by local, state, or federal government, are deployed in high-risk areas, typically elevated on poles, and run on solar and batteries. Operating 24/7, data captured is processed locally on the device, and then depending on rules, streams relevant data--encrypted end-to-end--to first responders, emergency services, local infrastructure providers and the general public. Deployments create a network effect when regions connect because data is able to flow across larger areas and create a deeper understanding of emerging risk. For example, a wildfire detected in one area can trigger vigilance and build intelligence in another so that responders can be prepared and proactive. A Promising Future For Wildfire and Flood Management Attentis exists in a growing competitive space that includes players such as Dryad and Aware, but they've achieved significant success, particularly in the Australian market through an emphasis on solutions that integrate a wide range of sensors that can be expanded as needed, process data locally on the device, integrate networks, and maintain a deep focus on ensuring quality data. More importantly, McKenna and his team, and others in this emergent ground-based intelligence IoT space, are delivering technology that is saving lives, protecting property, and giving responders and other stakeholders timely information to preempt and fight risks to communities. Today, extreme natural disaster events have shifted from being rare to becoming part of a new normal. Fortunately, new AI-powered technologies are rising to meet these challenges, and better outcomes can come if leaders are ready to step up and invest in the latest intelligent solutions.
