The team behind Winona's has opened a Mexico City-inspired cocktail bar

Time Out10-07-2025
Earlier this spring, we said farewell to Leyenda, Ivy Mix and Julie Reiner's bar in Cobble Hill. Lucky for us, an alum of the Pan-Latin bar is back, shaking up cantina-esque tipplers in Bed-Stuy.
Introducing a Mexico City-inspired cocktail bar and cantina to Bed-Stuy, Dolores (397 Tompkins Avenue) opened its doors on July 2. The new bar is a joint venture from husband-and-wife Cressida Greening and Emir Dupeyron, the duo behind the beloved Crown Heights eatery, Winona's. Pulling on Dupeyron's childhood growing up in Mexico City, the resulting bar channels cantinas found in the area mixed in with art from the 1930s and 1940s. Transforming the space—which previously held the dimly lit, cocktail lounge and queer bar, Oddly Enough—the bright green exterior now houses hand-carved tables, green velvet banquettes and a walnut and marble bar.
Channeling the rhythm of the city, albeit, in liquid form, the team tapped the surefire talent that is Leanne Favre. A renowned mixologist, Favre previously held the title of creative director at Cobble Hill's Clover Club and worked as creative director and head bartender at the shuttered Leyenda. As partner and beverage director of Dolores, Favre is shaking up agave-forward cocktails, including tried and true cantina staples with Margaritas on draft and Palomas with just the right amount of carbonation. Creativity continues with the Mexican Espresso Martini, a riff on the classic Carajillo cocktail, that swaps out espresso for a Mexican-made coffee rum and amaro. Meanwhile, her Midnight Cowboy martini variation comes with a spear of cotija-stuffed olives.
Naturally, it wouldn't be a cantina without some food. Botana, or shared snacks, dominate the menu with Sopes con Picadillo, Chicharrónes Fritos or fried pork belly and a Pressed Seafood Aguachile with a combo of octopus, shrimp and squid. There's also a full menu of tacos to be had here, much of which take note from famous eateries found across Mexico. The Cochinita Pibil Turix with its Yucatán-style braised pork takes inspiration from El Turix taqueria in the Polanco neighborhood of Mexico City while The Lengua 'El Bosque' is an homage to the decades-old Bar El Bosque in the San Miguel Chapultepec area.
But the weekends are sure to lure taco lovers of all kinds with its Tacos de Canasta deal. Translating to 'basket tacos,' the tacos are filled with various meats, covered in oil and layered in baskets to steam and stay warm. Available on Fridays and Saturdays from 11pm until sell out, this late-night bar bite will run you $2 per taco. So come the weekend, let's just say, you'll know where to find us.

Dame: Gorgeous sunlit café in a museum serving hearty brunch with a local twist

Ever walked out of an exhibition feeling strangely exhausted? Gallery visits can be overstimulating at times, which is why museums now make it a point to have 'quiet rooms' for visitors to reset. The folks behind Dame seem to have taken that idea and ran with it, which is why this new café in the National Museum of Singapore is the calm, considered space that it is. Think soft colour tones, natural textures and a warm, unhurried vibe. The menu follows suit – no culinary theatrics here, just comforting brunch faves with a thoughtful local twist. The sun-drenched main dining atrium steals the show, with natural light filtering in through the glass-panelled high ceilings. But if the café gets busy, there's also an adjacent dining area that's just as cosy, with a takeaway coffee stand in the following room. It's easy to pass off the interiors as Scandinavian-inspired, but it turns out the owners of Dame wanted to incorporate subtle Southeast Asian touches in the use of rattan fixtures and dried rice stalks throughout the space. Even the menu is beautifully designed – courtesy of local artist duo Ripple Root. We order the hua tiao chiew clam linguine ($22), the café's take on a classic vongole, amped up with a good douse of Chinese rice wine for added depth and flavour in the broth. The pasta lands just past al dente, not without intention, though. This level of doneness – neither firm nor overly mushy – caters to those who might find true al dente a tad undercooked. It goes the same for the other pasta dishes on the menu, including the black pepper crab linguine ($25), tomato penne ($18) and creamy mushroom carbonara ($20). There are also new additions to the brunch list, like the smoked salmon rosti ($22) and P.P.B. (pulled pork eggs benedict, $19), both served with perfectly done poached eggs. The latter sees smoky, well-seasoned pulled pork with a lemon hollandaise sauce, and it even swaps out the usual sourdough base for fluffy brioche bread (read: no more struggling to cut through sourdough slices that just won't budge). We make a mental note to return for the Teochew porridge platter ($18), served with a medley of condiments like braised pork belly, otah and mustard greens assembled in a bamboo basket. To cater to different diets, Dame also offers two gluten-free options on the menu – the grilled prawn and mango salad ($22) with a chilli coriander lime dressing, and its signature Kerabu bee hoon ($22) with tiger prawns, sakura shrimp and sambal belacan. Vegetarian options are aplenty as well. Meanwhile, there's the constant waft of coffee coming from the charming sage-green coffee bar. The menu covers all the regular espresso-based drinks, made with beans from the local favourite Common Man Coffee Roasters. You'll also find a solid selection of juices and smoothies (from $6.50), house-made coolers like chrysanthemum lemonade and lychee lemongrass ($7.50 each), and teas from the Singaporean heritage brand The 1872 Clipper Tea Co. (from $5). Find out more about Dame here.

Permit Room Portobello

The first London branch of Dishoom's all-day Bombay-inspired cafe sideline can be found in the jazzed-up bones of a grand Victorian boozer on one of the city's most famous streets. Permit Room Portobello comes on the back of branches in Brighton, Oxford and Cambridge, and is, essentially, Dishoom with a side hustle as a Notting Hill creative director. It's still fairly pub-like in demeanor; there's a big long bar and cosy booths, but design-wise it's had the full Dishoom treatment; glossy wood panelling, a smattering of South Asian art, embroidery pieces, parquet flooring and potted palms. There's a slightly formal first-floor dining room – good for dimly lit dinners as well as chai-fuelled weekday co-working – but if you're popping in to hoover up an 8am bacon naan, then the more casual ground floor is where you'll want to be. When it comes to food, the menu is shorter than your standard Dishoom offering, but with dishes exclusive to the Permit Room, such as chilli-cheese naan bites, and fish chapali patties, as well as cinnamon-spiked French toast for brekkie. But what really makes the Permit Room special is the fact that it's home to a stunningly designed two-room apartment upstairs - yes, a Dishoom hotel. It's £700 a night, but could comfortably sleep four, with bouncy beds, a large living area and a view up Portobello Road that seems straight out of a Richard Curtis movie. It feels less like a hotel and more like your stylish auntie's west London bolthole, complete with fridge stocked with Mango lassi and a mini bar full of Dishoom's prebottled cocktails.

Calvin Harris and Vick Hope welcome first baby and reveal powerful name

Calvin Harris and Vick Hope have shared the happy news of the birth of their first child. The couple posted a series of photos with their baby boy, named Micah, on Instagram, including some graphic images from the home water birth itself, such as Vick's placenta. '20th of July our boy arrived. Micah is here! My wife is a superhero and I am in complete awe of her primal wisdom! Just so grateful. We love you so much Micah,' Calvin wrote in the caption to his post. The name Micah has Hebrew origins and translates to 'who is like God?'. The other images include one of Calvin cradling the baby in the sun, lifting his son out of the water and the creation of Vick's (presumably) placenta pills. Vick reposted the first image on her story with the phrase 'my boys' with the sun emoji. The BBC Radio 1 presenter, Vick, 35, has been married to her DJ husband, 41, since September 2023, and announced her pregnancy in May. Friends and family are flocking to the comments to congratulate the new parents. 'Congratulations you 2,' chelceegrimes wrote on Instagram. 'Congratulations guys, hope mama and baby are doing amazing,' thedeanlife echoed. Placentophagy is the postpartum ingestion of the placenta and can be eaten in a variety of manners, including raw, cooked, roasted, dehydrated or encapsulated (the latter of which it appears Vick has opted to do). Women who choose to consume their placenta after birth believe it provides health benefits which could include a boost of energy through nutrients. There are several celebrities who have decided to try out this practice, such as Kourtney Kardashian, who once posted she would be 'sad' when her pills ran out. Hillary Duff has previously consumed a placenta smoothie and Coleen Rooney claimed her placenta pills have helped her beat post-natal depression and replenish her natural hormones. Despite the increasing popularity, some research has debunked the theory that it offers health benefits. In 2015, the BBC reported that a review by Northwestern University found no proven benefits and no research on the potential risks with the lead study author saying: 'Women really don't know what they are ingesting.' 'Massive congrats mate ! Big love,' Camrinwatsin said. 'Soooo happy for you,' annabelahor agreed. Vick decided to share that she was expecting on her drivetime show, Going Home with Vick, Katie and Jamie earlier this year. 'I should say that this is my final week. I wanted to share that with you because we've had such a lovely time over the last few weeks. That time is coming to an end for a bit because I'm going on maternity leave next week,' she said at the time. More Trending Co-host Jamie replied: 'You're an amazing friend, an amazing person, and you're just going to be an amazing mum.' The loved-up couple started dating in 2022 and, after an Ibiza engagement, they got at Hulne Priory in Alnwick, Northumberland with a Glastonbury-inspired wedding. Plenty of famous faces were in attendance, including Big Brother host AJ Odudu and radio presenters Vernon Kay and Scott Mills. Got a story?
