Johor leads Malaysia's agriculture with RM27.2 billion sales in 2023
ISKANDAR PUTERI: Johor has solidified its status as Malaysia's agricultural leader after recording RM27.2 billion in sector sales last year, the highest nationwide. State Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Zahari Sarip attributed the success to strong sub-sector performances: crops (RM20.9 billion), livestock (RM4.7 billion), aquaculture (RM1 billion), and fisheries (RM7 million).
The figures stem from the Department of Statistics Malaysia's (DOSM) 2024 Agricultural Census interim findings. Zahari credited Johor's achievement to strategic planning, federal-state collaboration, and robust private-sector involvement. He spoke after chairing the Johor State Food Security Working Committee meeting at the Dato' Jaafar Muhammad Building.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) allocated RM23.4 million to support high-impact agricultural programs, further boosting the sector. Zahari emphasized Johor's proactive measures to integrate farmers into the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) development. Workshops and engagement sessions are underway to safeguard agricultural entrepreneurs' interests while aligning them with long-term state growth.
Key initiatives include modern farming projects like *vertical farming* through local-Singaporean partnerships. Zahari noted, *'We are studying how the government can protect those involved in agriculture and food security, ensuring they benefit from JS-SEZ opportunities.'* Incentives for food security investors in southern Johor are also being drafted.

GENERAL PUTRAJAYA, June 30 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's labour market gained momentum in 2024, recording its strongest post-pandemic performance yet, with key indicators showing improvement and stability expected to persist into 2025, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said today. According to DOSM's Annual Statistics of the Labour Force, Malaysia 2024, the unemployment rate fell to 3.2 per cent, dipping below the pre-pandemic level of 3.3 per cent recorded in 2019. The number of unemployed persons also dropped to 534,100, driven largely by a decline in unemployment among youths aged 15 to 24. 'Concurrently, the labour force increased by 3.3 per cent to 16.90 million persons compared to 16.37 million persons in the previous year. The labour force participation rate (LFPR) also rose to a new record high of 70.6 per cent from 70 per cent in 2023,' DOSM said in a statement here today. The number of employed persons also saw positive annual growth, rising by 3.5 per cent to 16.37 million from 15.81 million in 2023, it said. "Accordingly, the employment-to-population ratio, which indicates the ability of an economy to create employment, also increased by 0.7 percentage points to 68.4 per cent from 67.7 per cent in 2023," it said. DOSM said in terms of employment status, 78.5 per cent of employed persons were classified as employees' category while the number of own-account workers category went up to 2.52 million persons, accounting for 15.4 per cent of total employment. It said most employed persons remained in semi-skilled occupations, representing 56.5 per cent of total employment or approximately 9.26 million persons, followed by skilled occupations (4.94 million persons) and low-skilled occupations category (2.17 million persons). From a sectoral perspective, employment remained dominant in the services sector which continued its upward trend and comprised 65.6 per cent of the total employment followed by the manufacturing sector at 16.3 per cent and agriculture sector at 9.0 per cent.

RTS Link crucial to Johor-Singapore economic zone, says Transport Minister
SINGAPORE: The Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) is a crucial component of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke. The project is not just ordinary infrastructure, as it signifies the strong friendship, trust, and mutual respect between Malaysia and Singapore. "The RTS Link is a major component of JS-SEZ. Without this link, I am sure it will not be as interesting as it is today," he said during a joint press conference with Singapore's acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow on Monday (June 30). Earlier, both ministers unveiled the new RTS Link train at the Singapore Rail Test Centre near Tuas. With this new milestone, Loke said the project has entered its final 18 months before the completion and commencement of service for the link. "We are not just unveiling a new train today. What it represents is two nations coming together. As people around the world are busy setting up barriers, here we are breaking down barriers, building more connectivity and bridges," he said. Meanwhile, his counterpart Siow expressed that the project was close to his heart as he was involved in the conceptualisation process back when he was a civil servant. "I am happy to see the link emerge after the agreement was signed by Malaysia and Singapore eight years ago. Be it travel for visiting the sights, work or staying connected with loved ones, this link will bring Singaporeans and Malaysians closer," he added. The rail service will see a train frequency of every 3.6 minutes for the shortest interval. When completed, RTS Link will connect Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru to Woodlands North in Singapore. It will facilitate the commute between Singapore and Johor Bahru, with a train journey time of about five minutes between the two stations. The RTS Link is targeted to commence passenger service by December 2026.

Malaysia, Singapore celebrate delivery of first RTS Link train ahead of 2026 opening
KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 — The first driverless trains for the Johor Baru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link was unveiled today and will begin testing at a new S$800 million (RM2.6 billion) facility in Tuas starting July. The new four-car train, measuring 76.5 metres in length, was introduced today at the Singapore Rail Test Centre (SRTC) in the presence of top transport officials from both countries, The Straits Times reported Singapore's Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow, Malaysia's Transport Minister Anthony Loke, and Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi attended the commemorative event. Datuk Khairil Anwar Ahmad, chairman of RTS Operations (RTSO), said the rail link represents not just an engineering feat but a deepening of Malaysia-Singapore ties. RTSO, a joint venture between Singapore's SMRT and Malaysia's Prasarana, is overseeing the construction and eventual operation of the rail system. As of today, the overall installation of systems for the RTS Link is 56 per cent complete, including the laying of tracks and the installation of the power system that will run the trains. Track installation is expected to be finished by the end of July, according to RTSO. All eight RTS Link trains are being built by China's CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive and each train can carry an optimal load of 607 passengers, or a maximum of 1,087. Each train car is equipped with 32 seats, including four foldable ones to accommodate wheelchairs, prams, or luggage. The trains are fitted with a hearing induction loop system that transmits public announcements directly to hearing aids, a first for both countries' rail systems. Passengers can activate an emergency call button or manually open the doors using red hatches connected to the control centre, which only function when the train is stationary. Only doors facing the emergency walkway along the RTS Link's elevated and tunnelled track can be opened during an emergency. Other safety features include smoke and fire detectors, as well as windows that can be opened to let in fresh air. Testing at SRTC will focus on ensuring that the trains integrate smoothly with systems like signalling and platform screen doors, and is expected to conclude in late 2025. After Tuas testing, the train will undergo service simulation trials between Woodlands North in Singapore and Bukit Chagar in Johor until the third quarter of 2026. Four more trains are now being assembled at CRRC's facility in Batu Gajah, Perak, while the remaining three will follow later. Once ready, the seven remaining trains will be sent directly to Johor Baru's Wadi Hana depot for further testing before the RTS Link opens. When operational, the trains will travel at speeds of up to 80kph and transport up to 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction over the 4km route.
