Kompany praises Bayern's constant threat
Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany praised his team's relentless attacking threat despite the ebbs and flows of their 4-2 Club World Cup win over Flamengo On Sunday.
The German side led 2-0 and again had a two-goal advantage at 3-1 but on both occasions the Brazilian club found a way to keep the contest alive.
Kompany – 'We always stayed dangerous
While pleased with that resilience from his team, former Manchester City captain Kompany was particularly impressed with the way his team never drifted out of the game.
'I think the key part of the game for me, which always remains a key part of the game, is we always stayed dangerous,' he told reporters.
'It didn't matter if we were defending or if we had the ball. I think if we had the ball we were always dangerous. But even when we defended, then on the counter in the moments we looked like a team that could score at any time,' he added.
'I thought we stayed calm and then we scored the goals at the right time just to take the pressure off a little bit. Playing against these teams, the fans are a big part of the game. The Boca game is very similar. They feel like away games for us. And we have to adapt and find a way to win,' he said.
Kompany said that ability to regain control of a game when an opponent is building momentum, is an element of the game that is tough to teach.
– 'Better players' –
'It's the hardest thing to coach, it really is. I've been a player myself. In these moments you take responsibility. It doesn't matter how good your coach is, it doesn't matter anything, you have to.
'And the main thing is you have to stay calm. It's something that the players did, it's the experience as well, but it's also something we talk about.
'We can't lose the game in five minutes because we had a bad period or because we considered it was a silly penalty.'
Flamengo coach Filipe Luis agreed that his team were given no respite by Bayern.
'The pressure they put on you is immense. They come at you with eight, 10 players. They deserved to win,' he said.
'Our plan did work and we were able to apply pressure and create goal scoring opportunities but they were better than us, we're playing against the football elite,' he said.
Asked again about the quality gap between South American clubs and the top European sides, Luis noted that the economic realities around the transfer of players was a big element.
'If Vinicius Jr had not left for Real Madrid, we would have the best player in the world. They (South American players) want to be in the elite and that's where they are. Had we won today and the tournament, it would not change the reality – they're high quality teams,' he said.
'We have many Brazilian players in our teams but they (the European teams) have the best ones. They have better players, that's a fact.'

Sam Ramsamy celebrates Kirsty Coventry's historic IOC presidency: A milestone for gender equality in sport
Sam Ramsamy in a recent interaction with newly appointed IOC head, Kirsty Coventry and the former head of the organisation, Thomas Bach SAM Ramsamy, South Africa's life honorary member and former executive board member of the International Olympic Committee, was present for the changing of the guard when Kirsty Coventry became the first woman IOC president. Coventry's statement-making appointment for gender equality in sports leadership happened in Lausanne, Switzerland, last week. She is a two-time Olympic gold medal winner in swimming and a previous Zimbabwean Youth, Sports Arts and Recreation minister, who has also become the first African to take up the IOC's top position. The 41-year-old Coventry's 8-year reign began on June 23, on the 131st birthday of the Olympic movement, has a total of seven Olympic medals (2 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze) to her name. She took over from German Thomas Bach, who led the IOC since 2013. Given his long association with Coventry, Ramsamy was certain that the IOC's running will go swimmingly with her at the helm. 'Having served as Minister of Sport in Zimbabwe, I am certain that it has given her the opportunity of being aware of the political landscape, which is so necessary in today's sports-political scenario.' Ramsamy was also convinced that her time competing at the highest levels will also be to the benefit of the organisation and the participants. 'No doubt Kirsty (Coventry) will pursue looking after the well-being of athletes while ensuring the fluent administration of the IOC, its activities, constituencies and affiliated Federations,' said Ramsamy. He got to know Coventry when she was still a junior swimmer. 'Having known Kirsty since her competitive days, we always acted cordially. Our friendship continues to this day. 'She took part in the African Games in Johannesburg in 1999 and won silver in the 100m backstroke. The gold medal went to Charlene Wittstock, now Princess Charlene of Monaco. 'Kirsty was also a member of the gold medal Zimbabwe 4 x 100m relay team.' He said her determination to succeed continued and in 2004, at the Athens Olympic Games, she bagged three medals (gold, silver and bronze). 'Of course, we as Africans were extremely proud. 'After her extraordinary performances, we organised a victory celebration at the South African Hospitality Centre for Kirsty and the Zimbabwe Olympic Team'. Ramsamy said she became an IOC Member in 2012. And served as IOC Board member on two different sessions. Ramsamy also had a close association with Bach. 'Thomas (Bach) always interacted with anyone who wished to chat with, especially athletes. 'Because of our personal relationship, he would openly discuss issues affecting sport at a political level. 'He went out of his way to explain the demise of apartheid and the role sport played.' Ramsamy said their friendship began long before they were elected to the IOC as members, well before the 1990s. Inzaghi hails 'extraordinary' Al Hilal after City upset
ORLANDO - Al Hilal's Italian coach Simone Inzaghi hailed his "extraordinary" team after Monday's stunning 4-3, extra-time win over Premier League giants Manchester City at the Club World Cup. "We knew had to do something extraordinary if we were to beat Manchester City and that is what the boys did tonight, the lads were simply wonderful," said Inzaghi after the shock of the tournament in Orlando. "We had to be extraordinary because well, Manchester City, we all know that team. So we had to climb Everest without oxygen to win the game and we made it. "We were great. All the players were exceptional in everything, in the possession phase, non-possession phase," added the former Inter Milan coach whose previous club were defeated by Fluminense just hours before the kick-off at Camping World Stadium. "It is only right in this moment, this evening, to enjoy this achievement up against the Manchester City of Guardiola. The heart that they put in tonight....." he said. Inzaghi had only been in charge of the team for a few days before the opening game where his side drew with Real Madrid and said the credit for the performance belongs with the players. "It is barely three weeks that we are together and you can see the level of application, they really put the effort in. As a coach clearly that is very satisfying. "The lads delivered that performance, they have reached the quarter-finals," he said. City won all three of their group stage games and after a 5-2 win over Juventus in their last game before the knockout stage they were viewed as one of the favourites for the title. City boss Pep Guardiola gave credit to Al Hilal but clearly hadn't seen such an outcome on the horizon. "It is a pity, we have been on an incredible journey together and so good place. The vibe was really good, I cannot thank Manchester City enough and especially the players for training and how they have been playing," he said. "We would have loved to have continued, you can only be here once every four years, we had a feeling that the team is doing well but we go home and now it is time to rest and rest our minds for the new season," he said. The Spaniard praised the way Inzaghi's team had hurt them on the counter-attack. "We were so open. When the crosses arrived, in the first action, they had the ability to pass the ball and attack and they have quick players. We created a lot and had a lot of chances against a team that defend so deep. They punished us on the transitions," he said.
