One Of The Best Crime Thrillers Ever Made Just Landed On Netflix

Forbes4 days ago
Dirty dealings, double-crosses, cops vs mobsters, moles vs moles. One of the best crime thrillers ever made comes to Netflix today and it's a must-watch for any fans of the genre, and anyone who likes some great twists and turns and plenty of edge-of-your-seat suspense. Director Martin Scorsese is on fire here, and the cast is among the best in the history of cinema. The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Vera Farmiga and Alec Baldwin.
Nearly 20 years old now, The Departed hit theaters back on October 6th, 2006. That's almost a year before the launch of Apple's first iPhone, and nearly two years before the housing collapse that helped win Obama the 2008 election. Given how different the world is now, it feels like a lot longer than 20 years ago.
See the Top 10 Movies headed to Netflix in August, 2025 right here.
The movie business was different back in 2006. The Departed feels like a movie from another age of cinema entirely, and I suppose it is. The digital age was certainly dawning, but most films were still shot on 35mm film. This was pre-streaming, which meant movies could still make a lot of money through DVD sales, something the film's star Matt Damon discussed on the popular YouTube channel, Hot Ones.
The decline in DVD and Blu-Ray sales and rise of streaming has had a noticeable impact on the kinds of movies that get made these days, and the quality of mid-tier films that once could make back a lot more of their budget after they left theaters. With the death of physical media and the slow decline of the theater business, movies are in dire straits these days. But I digress.
Light spoilers ahead.
The Departed is actually an adaptation of Hong Kong crime drama Internal Affairs. The story was moved from that city to Boston, MA, specifically South Boston. Jack Nicholson plays Irish Mob boss, Frank Costello. Costello plants one of his men, Colin Sullivan (Damon), as a spy within the Massachusetts State Police. Meanwhile, the police send in state trooper Billy Costigan (DiCaprio) undercover to infiltrate Costello's crime organization.
It's a terrific setup. Neither man knows who the mole is on the other side but either could uncover the other's secret at any point. It's a tense, incredibly suspenseful crime movie that's more drama than action. Still, when the action does pick up it will leave you stunned and shaken. Trust me. There's one scene in particular that's stuck with me ever since I saw this in the movie theater nearly 20 years ago.
The Departed has a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score with 286 reviews, which is frankly a little low for such a great crime thriller. Over 250,000 users on Rotten Tomatoes give the film a 94% score. This puts it behind some of Scorsese's best films like Goodfellas (94%) and Raging Bull (92%). It also puts it behind some of Scorsese's much more mediocre films, like The Irishman which has an inexplicable 95% though audiences gave it 86%. (I actually really despised The Irishman, which was pretty heartbreaking as a Scorsese fan. When De Niro's character beats up the grocer, I had to turn it off I was just laughing so hard at how bad it was).
As far as critics go, most are over-the-moon when it comes to The Departed. 'One of the best crime dramas ever made,' writes Mark Johnson of Awards Daily, "The Departed is a riveting film capable of being watched repeatedly. The pacing, acting, and writing are all superb, but what did you expect from a Scorsese picture?"
Sean Axmaker of Stream on Demand wrote of the film, '[Scorsese] turns the clever cat-and-mouse story of two rival informants scrambling to save themselves from discovery, into a star-studded mob opera spiked with grimy underworld detail and juiced with adrenaline and suspicion.'
The late, great Roger Ebert gave the film 4 stars, writing 'This movie is like an examination of conscience, when you stay up all night trying to figure out a way to tell the priest: I know I done wrong, but, oh, Father, what else was I gonna do?'
The Departed is out now on Netflix. Give it a watch. They don't make movies like they used to. Here's the trailer:

Mom, 46, Dies in Mobile Home Fire Despite Neighbors' Rescue Efforts as Teen Son and Friends Survive

"We pretty much heard her take her last breath," said a neighbor, who tried to rescue the trapped womanNEED TO KNOW A 46-year-old woman is dead after a fire engulfed her Michigan home on Aug. 4, authorities said Her 13-year-old son and his two friends were able to escape without serious injury "It was chaotic,' a neighbor said about the tragic incidentA 46-year-old Michigan woman is dead after a fire engulfed her mobile home, authorities said. Her 13-year-old son and his two friends were able to escape the Monday, Aug. 4, blaze, but neighbors weren't able to get her out of the building in time, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said in a press release shared on Facebook. Authorities said emergency responders responded just before 7:15 a.m. local time to Clarkston Lakes, a mobile home community in Clarkston. When they arrived, the single-wide mobile home in the 3800 block of Cedar Loop was 'engulfed in flames." 'Neighbors were unsuccessful in their attempts to help the mother escape from the rear of the home,' the sheriff's office said. The woman, who has not been identified at this time, died as a result of the fire. Authorities said the woman's 13-year-old son, who was in a rear bedroom, and two boys, ages 14 and 15, who were in the front of the house, all escaped without serious injury. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office and the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office have been contacted by PEOPLE for further comment. Just hours after the flames subsided, locals shared harrowing details about the fire and attempts to save the woman. 'It was chaotic,' a neighbor, Robert Elder, told FOX affiliate WJBK. 'There were people running around, screaming, trying to figure out if everybody was out.' He and another resident living nearby tried to rescue the 46-year-old woman when they realized she was trapped inside. "We were pulling on her, and then we would almost take turns pulling on her,' he told the outlet. 'At one point I think we both grabbed her arms trying to pull on her.' Elder compared the heat of the fire to being near the sun. The flames caused the sides of neighbors' homes to melt, WJBK reported. "We pretty much heard her take her last breath," Elder told the outlet. "That was the hardest part.' The man added that he wished that he could have done more to save her, according to WJBK. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard offered his thoughts and prayers to the family following the tragic incident, and also issued a reminder to residents. 'While we are still in the process of determining cause and origin, any fire is a reminder that we should make sure our smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order,' he said in a statement, 'and we know how to escape from any room in our house should an emergency call for it.' Disney earnings preview: All eyes on ESPN amid streaming push

Disney (DIS) is set to report fiscal third quarter results before the bell on Wednesday. Investor attention is squarely on its sports strategy amid reports that ESPN has reached a deal to acquire key NFL Media assets, including NFL RedZone, in exchange for an equity stake of up to 10% in the network. Sports remain a central pillar of Disney's streaming strategy as ESPN prepares to launch a new standalone service this fall. Analysts see the debut as a key step toward more bundling opportunities with Disney+ and Hulu as streamers across the industry work to retain subscribers and reduce churn. Here's how Wall Street expects Disney to perform, according to consensus estimates compiled by Bloomberg: Total revenue: $23.68 billion versus $23.16 billion in Q3 2024 Adjusted earnings per share: $1.46 versus $1.39 in Q3 2024 Entertainment revenue: $10.82 billion versus $10.58 billion in Q3 2024 Parks and Experiences revenue: $8.87 billion versus $8.39 billion in Q3 2024 Sports revenue: $4.44 billion versus $4.56 billion in Q3 2024 Disney+ subscriber net additions: 2.05 million versus 7.7 million in Q3 2024 "With the NFL as an investor, ESPN's long-term future is incrementally more secure," Morgan Stanley analyst Ben Swinburne wrote in a note previewing the results. "While the NFL cannot stop cord-cutting and will surely not give Disney a discount in future rights renewals, by investing in ESPN, the NFL will be even more motivated to help ESPN survive and potentially thrive in the new streaming-first world ahead," he wrote. Read more: Live coverage of corporate earnings In May, Disney raised its full-year profit forecast to $5.75 a share, marking a 16% increase from fiscal 2024. "If the macro backdrop remains healthy, we see Disney generating healthy double-digit adjusted EPS growth in the years ahead," Swinburne added, raising his price target on the stock to $140 from the prior $120. Disney stock has rebounded about 7% since the start of 2025 but still slightly lags the broader S&P 500 (^GSPC). The push into streaming comes as Disney continues to adapt to the mass exodus of pay-TV subscribers. In June, the company laid off several hundred employees across its global operations in a bid to streamline costs, with cuts impacting areas such as TV marketing, publicity, and corporate finance. In a statement to Yahoo Finance, Disney said at the time that it had taken a "surgical" approach to minimize the number of impacted roles, adding that no entire teams were being eliminated. Since 2023, Disney has cut more than 8,000 jobs as part of a $7.5 billion cost-savings initiative. Beyond sports and streaming, Disney's Parks and Experiences segment remains a key growth driver. Wall Street analysts expect operating income from the unit to accelerate in fiscal 2026, fueled by new cruise ships and the continued ramp-up of international and domestic park expansions. In a notable push abroad, the company recently announced plans to open a new theme park and resort in Abu Dhabi — its first major expansion into the Middle East and its seventh global resort. The move comes as fresh competition emerges closer to home following the debut of NBCUniversal's Epic Universe in May. Alexandra Canal is a Senior Reporter at Yahoo Finance. Vikings receiver Jordan Addison suspended for 3 games as a result of 2024 DUI

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison has been suspended by the NFL in connection to a DUI charge from 2024, the NFL announced on Tuesday. Addison will miss three games as a result of the suspension, though he is still permitted to practice with the team and play in the preseason. Addison was arrested in Southern California last July after being found "asleep at the wheel" while blocking a freeway lane near Los Angeles International Airport. He was charged with driving under the influence after being arrested under suspicion of drunk driving. Addison was facing a minimum three-game suspension from the NFL as a result of the incident. The third-year receiver was set to go in front of a jury trial last month, but instead pled down to a lesser offense. Addison will serve 12 months' probation as part of the lesser charge, known as a "wet reckless"; the charge, also known as "wet and reckless," is a reckless driving charge where alcohol or drugs are involved, but carries a lesser sentence than a DUI. In addition to receiving probation, Addison was required to pay a fine and finish two online courses related to driving under the influence, per Addison's agent Tim Younger, who said that he expects Addison's probation to end early after six months. As a result of pleading down, Addison will not have his driver's license suspended. Despite not being formally convicted of a DUI, Addison is still subject to the NFL's strict personal conduct policy, which states that players who have violated the policy can still be punished even if they do not receive a criminal conviction. Addison has put up two consistent years with Minnesota, starting in 15 games last season. He is the team's second-leading receiver and scorer behind star Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson, who is currently questionable with a hamstring injury without a clear timeline for return.
