Robotic fire-fighter can reach places where men cannot

The Hindu15-05-2025
As fire-fighting was in full swing at a building in Afzalgunj, a small French-made robot of high-strength aluminium was used to assist firemen.
Designed to enhance safety and efficiency during fire mishaps, it is 3.7 foot tall, and can replace two fire-fighters and get close to places where the men cannot reach, said Director General of Telangana State Disaster Response and Fire Services Y. Nagi Reddy.
These robotic fire-fighters can be remotely controlled, enabling fire crews to assess the situation and extinguish flames from a safe distance. The equipment can be operated within a 500-metre range, with real-time feedback, including controls and camera views, provided through its display screen.
Built-in cooling system
Mr. Nagi Reddy stated that the recently-procured robot is capable of withstanding temperatures up to 900°C, thanks to its built-in cooling system. By connecting it to a water source, the robot can be directed closer to the blaze, reaching areas that are too dangerous for humans. This effectively replaces the work of two fire personnel. It is particularly useful in tackling fires in warehouses and shops.
'Just a few days ago, there was an incident at Chandanagar, and I instructed the team to use the equipment wherever possible. We have three such units in operation, all of which are battery-powered that provide up to six hours of operation. Spare batteries are available. One unit has been allocated to each of the districts of Hyderabad, Rangareddy, and Medchal-Malkajgiri,' he added.

Taiwan warns: These Chinese apps are sending users' data to China

Taiwan's National Security Bureau (NSB) has warning for users of Chinese apps. In an advisory, NSB said that China-developed apps like RedNote (Xiaohongshu), Weibo, TikTok, WeChat and Baidu Cloud pose security risks due to excessive data collection and data transfer to China. The alert reportedly comes following an inspection of these apps carried out in coordination with the Taiwan's Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau (MJIB) and the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) under the National Police Agency. NSB said that the results indicate the existence of security issues, including excessive data collection and privacy infringement. It further warned, "The public is advised to exercise caution when choosing mobile apps." NSB also pointed out that companies operating in China are obligated to turn over user data under domestic laws for national security, public security, and intelligence purposes. So, using these apps can breach the privacy of users. How NSB found out Chinese apps are sending data to China The agency said that it evaluated Chinese apps against 15 indicators spanning five broad categories: Personal data collection, excessive permission usage, data transmission and sharing, system information extraction, and biometric data access. According to the analysis, RedNote violated all 15 indicators, followed by Weibo and TikTok that were found to breach 13 indicators. WeChat and Baidu Cloud violated 10 and 9 of the 15 indicators, respectively. These issues encompassed extensive collection of personal data, including facial recognition information, screenshots, clipboard contents, contact lists, and location information. All the apps have also been flagged for harvesting the list of installed apps and device parameters. "With regard to data transmission and sharing, the said five apps were found to send packets back to servers located in China," the NSB said. "This type of transmission has raised serious concerns over the potential misuse of personal data by third-parties." Ban on Chinese apps across the world Taiwan's warning comes after several nations across the world have banned or restricted certain Chinese apps. In June 2020, India announced ban almost 100 Chinese-made apps, citing national security concerns. In November 2024, Canada ordered TikTok to dissolve its operations in the country. Last week, one of Germany's data protection authorities asked Apple and Google to remove Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot DeepSeek from their respective app stores. The Germany's data protection authourity accused DeepSeek of unlawful user data transfers to China. Several other countries too have announced similar restrictions on DeepSeek. France joins European push for satellite internet on trains

By Gianluca Lo Nostro France's state-owned rail company SNCF will launch a tender soon to add satellite internet to its trains, becoming the latest European rail operator to explore space-based systems for onboard connectivity. In a statement to Reuters, SNCF said on Friday it was pursuing an "innovative approach to strengthen connectivity and resilience" by combining terrestrial networks with low Earth-orbit satellite solutions. The company said the strategy aims to ensure service continuity across its entire network, including isolated sites, and guarantee better internet access for train passengers. "The satellite plus 4G/5G combination would eliminate dead zones and offer stable, fast service adapted to new uses such as streaming or video conferencing," SNCF said. Elon Musk's Starlink and France's Eutelsat are among the companies being considered, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters. SNCF would not discuss with Reuters whether it was in talks with specific providers. A Eutelsat spokesperson confirmed the company's interest in the deal as it is already in talks with SNCF about setting up a pilot project as they have already done in Britain and Kazakhstan. "As one of only two LEO (low Earth orbit) operators currently in service, and the only French player, we intend to bid for the contract with our French partners such as Orange business services," the spokesperson said. Starlink, which initially focused on consumer services, has expanded into enterprise markets, particularly in transportation and maritime sectors. Eutelsat, propped up by the French government in its push for LEO services, provides internet access through its OneWeb network of more than 600 LEO satellites. The move follows similar initiatives across Europe. Italy's state railway Ferrovie dello Stato ran a two-week trial in June with two providers, including Starlink, Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini said in May. Scotland's ScotRail also launched a six-week Starlink trial in May. Most European trains rely on cellular networks for internet access. However, connection quality varies with mobile network coverage, often dropping in rural areas or tunnels. The high speeds of trains also create technical challenges as systems must constantly switch between mobile towers, causing intermittent service. Satellites, on the other hand, offer consistent coverage everywhere, including remote areas where cellular towers are sparse or nonexistent.

Women-driven e-rickshaws to be deployed in Puducherry's Boulevard for last-mile connectivity

Residents can soon zip around Puducherry city in environmentally friendly e-rickshaws driven by women. The Transport Department has procured 38 white-and-blue e-rickshaws, which will be operated by the Puducherry Municipality in the Boulevard area to enhance last-mile connectivity. The fleet is scheduled to be launched next week. E-rickshaws, which are popular in Delhi, Jaipur and Udaipur, are not only efficient and environment friendly, but also a cheap mode of transport, officials said. Four charging stations — two each at the Mairie building, where the Puducherry Municipality office is located, and the Old Port — are being set up for the vehicles. Additionally, 15 charging points are proposed at a permanent site belonging to the municipality in Dubryapet. Powered by lithium-ion technology, the e-rickshaw offers increased savings, superior ride quality, and comfort for drivers and passengers. The zero-emission vehicle can travel up to 85 km on a single charge. 'With a view to include women in the green mobility landscape in the city, the Transport Department has identified around 150 women and issued driving licences to them. The municipality has trained around 38 women drivers to drive the electric rickshaws. The rides can be booked through an app,' Transport Commissioner A.S. Sivakumar said. He added, 'The penetration of intermediary public transport is very low, especially in the Boulevard area. With limited options for mobility, the government has introduced e-rickshaws. These battery-operated vehicles have multiple benefits and can easily navigate the narrow roads in the French and Tamil quarters in the Boulevard area. The vehicle can carry four passengers and can run 85 km on full charge.' Initially, five e-rickshaws will be rolled out, and the rest will be introduced in a phased manner. The Transport Department has framed procedural guidelines for licensing/registration and grant of permit for the e-rickshaws to provide affordable transport to senior citizens, women, and children for last-mile connectivity. The introduction of e-rickshaws is aimed at empowering women and providing them with a secure means of livelihood, officials said. While the department will be responsible for the fare notification, the operation and maintenance of the vehicles will be borne by the municipality. The running cost per km will be considerably lower when compared to petrol/diesel powered vehicles. The fleet of rickshaws have a uniform colour code and are painted with main tourist attractions in the city, including the beach, Aayi Mandapam, and Gandhi Thidal. They will have GPS facility to link to an exclusive mobile app with QR code for easy trip booking. The link will also be connected to a monitoring centre at the Transport Deportment. The vehicles will be under the control of the municipality, and the local body will work out the revenue sharing formula.
