Syrian asylum seeker who killed three people and wounded ten others in knife rampage at 'festival of diversity' after he was slated for deportation pleads guilty at German court
Issa Al Hasan, 27, made the confession at the start of his trial, held under tight security at the higher regional court in Duesseldorf on Tuesday.
In a statement read out by his lawyer, Hasan, sitting under police guard behind a protective glass screen, admitted having 'committed a grave crime '.
'Three people died at my hands. I seriously injured others,' Hasan said of the attack in August in the western city of Solingen.
'Some of them survived only by luck. They could have died, too,' he said in the statement.
'I deserve and expect a life sentence.'
The stabbing spree at the mid-summer street festival was one of a string of attacks that shocked Germany and stoked security fears.
Hasan was an asylum seeker from Syria who had been slated for deportation.
German authorities' failure to remove him from the country fired a bitter debate over immigration that heated up in the run-up to national elections in February this year.
Hasan faces charges including three counts of murder, 10 counts of attempted murder and membership of a foreign terrorist organisation.
Prosecutors say he set out to harm 'nonbelievers' at the 'festival for diversity' in the centre of the western city of Solingen.
Hasan allegedly saw his targets 'as representatives of Western society' and sought 'to take revenge against them for the military actions of Western states'.
An IS member whom Hasan had contacted that month allegedly encouraged him to go ahead with the plan and promised him that the group would claim it and use it for propaganda purposes.
The group later said via its Amaq outlet on the messaging app Telegram that an IS 'soldier' had carried out the attack in 'revenge' for Muslims 'in Palestine and everywhere'.
Prosecutors say Hasan had filmed videos in which he pledged allegiance to IS and forwarded them on to his IS contact just before he committed the attack.
Hasan did not specifically address his alleged motivations for carrying out the attack or his supposed IS membership.
A psychiatric expert told the court that the accused had denied being a radical Islamist.

In the statement read out by his lawyer, Hasan said he had 'killed and injured innocent people, not unbelievers'.
'Christians, Jews and Muslims, we all are cousins, not enemies.'
The stabbing spree was one in a series of attacks attributed to asylum seekers and migrants that pushed immigration to the top of the political agenda in Germany.
In May 2024, a man with a knife attacked people at an anti-Islam rally in Mannheim, fatally wounding a police officer who intervened.
The Afghan suspect went on trial in February and is also alleged to be sympathetic to the IS group.
In December, a Saudi man was arrested after a car ploughed through a Christmas market crowd in the eastern city of Magdeburg, killing six people and wounding hundreds.
And in January, a man with a kitchen knife attacked a group of kindergarten children in Aschaffenburg, killing a two-year-old boy and a man who tried to protect the toddlers.
A 28-year-old Afghan man was arrested at the scene of the attack, which came during campaigning for February 23 elections.
Just 10 days before the vote, an Afghan man was arrested on suspicion of driving a car through a street rally in Munich, killing a two-year-old girl and her mother and injuring dozens.
The centre-right CDU/CSU, which demanded tough curbs on immigration in the wake of the attacks, came first in the election with 28.5 per cent of the vote.
The biggest gains however were made by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which saw its share of the vote more than double to over 20 per cent.

Rewilding group to assess possible return of white storks to London
An urban rewilding group is seeking the public's views on the potential return of white storks to London as part of a project to see if the birds could make a home in the capital. White storks could once be seen flying in Britain's skies and building their huge nests on roofs and in trees, but they disappeared centuries ago as a breeding bird as a result of hunting and habitat loss. Citizen Zoo, an organisation that specialises in community-led urban rewilding, is conducting an appraisal on making London a 'white stork-friendly city'. It will include habitat mapping, contacting boroughs across the capital to gauge their interest and surveying the public about the birds. The White Stork Project in Sussex has sought to create new colonies of rehabilitated injured birds at Knepp and Wadhurst Park since 2016. These can act as a 'magnet' for wild birds that visit from the continent, and the project's first breeding success was in 2020. In the four decades before the start of the project there were just 27 records of white storks across Greater London, but there were 472 sightings between 2016 and 2023, with the numbers increasing year on year, conservationists said. Elliot Newton, a co-founder of Citizen Zoo and its director of rewilding, said: 'If you look across European landscapes, this is a bird that can actually thrive in urban landscapes. What we want to see is how we can make London a more white stork-friendly environment, and embrace it for its ability to inspire people about the nature we can and should have close to where we live.' The survey is being led by Dr Rachel White, of the University of Brighton, with two phases that mirror a national survey she conducted as part of the White Stork Project in Sussex. The first phase has involved surveying a representative sample of 1,000 Londoners, and the second phase is asking residents and frequent visitors to give their views on white storks and their place in the capital. The London survey will feed into Citizen Zoo's wider assessment of the political and public enthusiasm and habitat availability for storks, and potential next steps such as creating more habitat to encourage natural colonisation or even a release similar to that in Sussex. This is proof Keir Starmer has only incentivised Hamas to inflict more agony, says ALAN MENDOZA
The limitless cruelty of Hamas is starkly visible in every jutting bone of Evyatar David, the restaurant worker held hostage by Palestinian terrorists since he was seized at gunpoint at a music festival in the October 7 atrocities. In sickening video footage released by Hamas, David was shown close to death from starvation and torture, apparently being forced to dig his own grave. However appalled we are at the images – also controlled and released by Hamas – of starving Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip, it ought to be unthinkable that a British government rewards a terrorist organisation for the brutal mistreatment and exploitation of innocent hostages. Yet that is what Sir Keir Starmer has done, by offering to recognise a Palestinian state next month if an immediate ceasefire is not agreed – by Israel alone. In doing so, he has incentivised Hamas to inflict agonies on the hostages, while allowing its own civilian population to starve. And he has placed himself in a seemingly impossible political situation. Both courses of action – either following through on his threat, or performing another U-turn – are likely to destroy his premiership. Make no mistake, it is Hamas only that benefits from the hideous photographs of starvation in Gaza – the scale of which, it is important to note, remains unverified by international reporters who are not allowed into the territory. Hamas is one of the main reasons the flow of aid and distribution of food in Gaza has broken down. The United Nations has been so infiltrated and compromised by Palestinian extremists that their aid workers refuse to co-operate with the Israeli army. The result is an impasse that leaves children dying from hunger while food rots at the Gaza border and while the terrorist leaders gloat that they're winning the propaganda war. Proof of this came in the footage of Ghazi Hamad, a senior Hamas politician, crowing to Arab news station Al Jazeera about support from Britain, France and Canada. With his jacket open over a well-fed stomach, Hamad sneered: 'The initiative by several countries to recognise a Palestinian state is one of the fruits of October 7.' What an appalling indictment of British foreign policy: a terrorist militia, proscribed under our own laws, boasting of the successes brought about by their slaughter in cold blood of unarmed civilians, many of them women and even children. How is it possible for our Prime Minister to be so naive and badly advised? What did he imagine would be the result of his statement last week? He has rewarded Hamas for everything they have done, and promised a bigger reward if they keep doing it. His obscenely stupid decision is, of course, the result of panic in the Labour ranks. His MPs, including many in his Cabinet, are desperate to fend off the threat to their seats that comes from pro-Palestine Muslim voters in their own constituencies, as well as from the creation of a new, ultra-Left party by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana. Wes Streeting, the Health Secretary, has a majority of just 528, in an area where a third of the population are Muslim. The Justice Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, represents a seat with a 53 per cent Muslim population, and a majority of 3,421. Even a small number among them would tip the balance. In A craven attempt to placate anti-Israeli voters who could wipe out his government at the next General Election, Starmer has sacrificed British strategic interests as well as our moral standing. Our main ally, the US, is disgusted with us, and rightly so. He has removed all pretence that Britain can play a future role in the Middle East as any kind of honest broker. This is a foreign policy designed for Bradford and Birmingham, not the international stage. And it won't work because only a fool would believe that extremists will do anything other than pocket this appeasement before demanding more. To press ahead now with recognising a Palestinian state will do the UK irreparable harm. But to back out will be deeply unpopular with his backbenchers and with his Cabinet. If this proves Keir Starmer's downfall, it will be entirely self-inflicted
