Russia, Ukraine say new POW exchange completed

Al Arabiya19-06-2025
Russia and Ukraine said Thursday that they had completed another exchange of captured soldiers, part of a deal reached earlier in June at peace talks in Istanbul.
During the talks, the first direct negotiations between the sides in three years, both countries agreed to free more than 1,000 prisoners of war from each side -- all wounded, ill or under 25 years old.
But neither side said how many soldiers had been freed in Thursday's exchange, the latest in several swaps since the June 2 talks.
'Our people are returning home from Russian captivity,' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media.
The Ukrainian government agency overseeing the exchanges said it involved 'seriously ill and wounded' soldiers.
Most of the Ukrainians had been captured in the first months of Russia's 2022 invasion and had developed 'serious medical conditions and illnesses' including dystrophy, ulcers, vision problems, musculoskeletal disorders and cardiovascular diseases, Ukraine said.
Russia's defense ministry confirmed the exchange, posting pictures of soldiers draped in Russian flags cheering and waving.
Zelenskyy posted similar photos of freed Ukrainian soldiers, crying, smiling and calling loved ones after being swapped.
Moscow has rejected Ukrainian calls for an unconditional ceasefire at the talks, demanding instead that Kyiv cede more territory and renounce Western military support as a precondition for peace.

Denmark says will do ‘everything we can' to help Ukraine join EU

Denmark will do everything in its power to help Ukraine join the EU, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Thursday as she welcomed Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy. 'Ukraine belongs in the European Union. It is in both Denmark's and Europe's interest,' Frederiksen, who has been a fervent supporter of Ukraine, said in a statement. 'Therefore, the Danish EU presidency will do everything we can to help Ukraine on their way towards EU membership,' she added while announcing Zelenskyy's attendance at the official opening of Denmark's EU presidency. Zelenskyy's visit to Denmark comes as the United States has announced that it will stop supplying certain weapons to Ukraine. Increased military support, cooperation with the Ukrainian defense industry and new sanctions against Russia will also be on the agenda, according to the Danish government. 'We must strengthen Ukraine. And we must weaken Russia,' Frederiksen said. 'The former by increasing military support... The latter, we will achieve with sanctions. We must increase pressure on Russia,' she added. In addition to Frederiksen, Zelenskyy will meet with European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa in Aarhus, Denmark's second largest city. Copenhagen has made European security, which it also links to a strict migration policy, one of the priorities of its presidency. Denmark wants to move forward on a European plan presented in March to increase the defense capabilities of EU countries using simplified procedures and loans to finance investments in the European defense industry.

Ukraine's President Arrives in Denmark for Talks With Key European Backers

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Denmark on Thursday as the Nordic country launched its European Union presidency, the Danish prime minister's office said. Zelenskyy flew into the western city of Aarhus. A Ukrainian flag flew from the aircraft cockpit as it parked. He was due to hold talks with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, both staunch backers of Ukraine. His trip comes after the Trump administration decided to halt some arms shipments promised to help Kyiv fight off Russia's invasion. 'Ukraine belongs in the EU. It is in the interest of both Denmark and Europe. Therefore, the Danish Presidency will do everything we can to help Ukraine on its path toward EU membership,' Frederiksen said in a statement. Her government has invested in Ukraine's defense industry – which can produce arms and ammunition more quickly and cheaply than elsewhere in Europe – and has invited Ukrainian companies to set up shop on safer ground in Denmark. Ukraine's EU membership path is being blocked by Hungary. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán insists that Ukraine should remain a buffer zone between Russia and NATO countries. During his visit to Denmark, Zelenskyy is also expected to discuss cooperation in the defense industry and new sanctions against Russia. He is also likely to have an audience with King Frederik X of Denmark.
