Skier Dies in 300m Fall in Alps' Couloir des Cosmiques
This area is known for tough skiing, graded 5.1, E3, D+, S5, and is popular among very experienced skiers. However, a fall can be fatal.
At 9:20 am, the Chamonix PGHM rescue team (Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne) received an alert, according to Le Dauphine. The rescuers helicoptered from their base in Les Bois, reaching the site minutes later. The slope was too steep to land, so rescuers were lowered to the skier. They tried to revive the man, but he had died. They then airlifted out his body. The skier's name was not released.
That day was busy for the PGHM, with six rescues. In the Capucin Couloir, another skier broke his leg and was evacuated. On the North Face of Mont Blanc du Tacul, a skier caused an avalanche that swept away others. The PGHM rescued the people and took them to the hospital.

Drainage Done Right: Smart Solutions to Protect Your Home (and Your Sanity)
When it rains, it pours—especially here on the Gulf Coast. And if your yard turns into a swamp or your crawl space turns into a wading pool every time the skies open up, it's time to get serious about drainage solutions. Poor drainage isn't just a soggy inconvenience. It can cause foundation damage, destroy landscaping, breed mosquitoes, and lead to mold, mildew, and structural headaches inside your home. Whether you're dealing with standing water, erosion, or just constant mud, smart drainage design can save your property—and your peace of mind. Let's explore the best residential drainage solutions, and if you're looking into French drains in Mobile, AL, we'll break down exactly how they work and why they're often the go-to solution for Southern homes. First, here are some signs your drainage system isn't doing its job: Puddles that linger in your yard for days after rain Soil erosion around your home or landscaping beds Water stains on foundation walls Mildew or moldy smells in basements or crawl spaces Cracks in walls or foundation Soggy spots in the lawn, especially near downspouts Plants dying from 'wet feet' (overly saturated roots) If any of that sounds familiar, don't panic—it just means it's time for a drainage plan. 1. Grading and Sloping The most basic and essential solution is proper grading —ensuring that your lawn slopes away from your house. Water should naturally flow away from your foundation and not collect near it. This is the first fix for most drainage issues. 2. Downspout Extensions and Splash Blocks Sometimes the easiest fix is extending your gutters. If your downspouts dump water right at the base of your home, extensions can carry it several feet away. Pair this with splash blocks or underground piping for better water control. 3. French Drains Ah, the MVP of underground drainage. A French drain is a trench filled with gravel and a perforated pipe that redirects water away from your home or soggy lawn. It's discreet, effective, and ideal for collecting and moving groundwater that accumulates near foundations, driveways, patios, or garden beds. If you're searching for French drains in Mobile, AL, you're on the right path. With our rainy, humid climate and occasional storms, French drains are one of the most effective long-term solutions for both surface and subsurface water issues. 4. Dry Wells A dry well is essentially a holding tank buried underground. It collects excess water (often from French drains or downspouts) and slowly releases it into the surrounding soil. It's especially useful when the city drainage system can't handle additional runoff. 5. Catch Basins and Channel Drains For driveways, patios, and other hardscapes, surface water can pool quickly. Catch basins and channel drains (those grated lines you see along sidewalks or garages) intercept the water and funnel it into your underground drainage system. 6. Sump Pumps If your home sits below the water table or you deal with frequent flooding in the basement or crawl space, a sump pump is essential. It automatically pumps water out of the space and away from the foundation when water levels rise. In a region like Mobile, where clay-heavy soil meets heavy rainfall and high humidity, water doesn't always absorb or drain naturally. French drains solve this by collecting water underground and moving it elsewhere—before it becomes a problem . Here's why they're so popular in the area: They prevent water from pooling around foundations They can protect against crawl space flooding They're ideal for flat yards where water doesn't run off easily They can be customized to discreetly fit your landscape They pair perfectly with downspout systems and sump pumps Properly installed French drains in Mobile, AL can mean the difference between a dry home and a disaster. But keep in mind: trenching, pipe placement, and gravel depth are all key—and a poorly installed drain won't help much at all. Yes, you can DIY a drainage solution—but should you? Drainage is more than digging a ditch and hoping for the best. It involves soil type, water flow patterns, slope angles, and sometimes permits or inspections. Hiring a professional means: Getting the right materials and depth Ensuring long-term durability Avoiding accidental utility line damage Installing systems that actually solve the problem, not just hide it When it comes to protecting your home, few things are more important than keeping water where it belongs. Whether you need minor grading or a full French drain system, taking action now can prevent major repairs (and massive headaches) later. If you're struggling with soggy lawns or moisture in your foundation and want to explore professional drainage and French drains in Mobile, AL , reach out to a licensed local contractor who understands the specific challenges of our Gulf Coast environment. Water always finds a way—make sure it finds its way away from your house . TIME BUSINESS NEWS

French Bulldog Damages Home To Ensure He Can Enjoy 'Best Life' in Yard
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A viral video showing the extreme lengths a French bulldog will go to in order to play outside in the rain has left the internet in stitches. Dogs aren't always keen on going outside in the rain, but one French bulldog will do just about anything to run around in it. The dog's antics left his owner, Brit Orndorff, stunned, as she captured a video showing just how far he went to have his moment in the downpour. During the video, which was shared on TikTok (@brit_orndorff) on July 12, the owner shows the perfect Frenchie sized hole that he'd burrowed into the screen door. It was evidently in his way and he didn't mind tearing a hole through it to reach the outside. Upon discovering how her dog had escaped into the yard, Orndorff filmed him leaping around on the deck and practically dancing in the rain. Indeed, the Frenchie couldn't have looked happier, leaving his owner joking that he was "just living his best life, any way possible." LightFieldStudios/Getty Images In the days since the video was shared on TikTok, it has delighted social media users who can't get enough of the dog's antics. This has led to the viral video generating over 113,700 views and more than 12,300 likes on TikTok at the time of writing. Newsweek has contacted @brit_orndorff via TikTok for comment. We could not verify the details of the video. Thankfully, Orndorff was able to laugh at her dog's mischief as she wrote on TikTok that he's "so lucky he's cute." Meanwhile, her two other Frenchies couldn't be more different as they straight up "refuse to go out" when it's raining. Many French bulldog owners will be familiar with this chaotic energy, as the website PetMD suggests that the breed is fun-loving with very outgoing personalities. They are known for being curious and love being the center of attention, so this pup's antics appear to be very on brand. Since the video went viral, internet users have lauded the French bulldog for just living his best life and not caring about the rules. This has led to more than 570 comments on the TikTok post, as many defended the cheeky pup. One comment reads: "He just wanted his main character moment in the rain." Another TikTok user wrote: "He said it's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission." Another person joked: "those sliding screens are wonderful in concept, but are not built to withstand a dog that REALLY wants to go outside." While one commenter added: "You can tell he had 0 regrets." Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share? We want to see the best ones!
